dornik // rebound

The artist/drummer Dornik (Dornik Leigh) is already turning heads. Over the summer he tested the waters with his exceedingly sexy single Something About You. And for the more observant ears, you may remember Dornik lending vocal talent as he accompanied Jessie Ware on the song Valentine. Now, he has made an even catchier release with the track Rebound, this one is so upbeat it’ll make your ears smile a mile wide. Look for his debut release early 2014 courtesy of PMR. Peace. sally shapiro // if it doesn’t rain tonight (digits remix)

Toronto-based producer and fervent remixologist Digits rearranges the sonics of Sally Shapiro‘s If It Doesn’t Rain Tonight and the results are pleasing to the ear. Earlier this year Sally Shapiro + Johan Agebjorn unleashed upon the world at large their 3rd LP, Somewhere Else via Paper Bag Records (Permanent Vacation in the UK). The remix track hits the streets running December 4th via Flashback Records. Continue reading “sally shapiro // if it doesn’t rain tonight (digits remix)”

pompeya // tropical lp

Moscow’s Pompeya is inspired by music which played the airwaves freely 30-years ago. But I love how they’ve recycled old sounds into new shapes with electric harmonies, melodic synth work, and yummy guitar riffs to create an unpretentious pop which stands up to anything else being produced today. Check out the band’s Tropical LP out now via Gala in Russia, and No Shame Records in the US. Continue reading “pompeya // tropical lp”

laura groves // pale shadows

Laura Groves does this thing with her voice where she weaves her tender vocals through the vulnerable temperament of your ears and she doesn’t let go. On her latest, Pale Shadows taken from her Autumn release Thinking About You (via DEEK Records) picks up where she left with her 2009 solo debut as Blue Roses. This release sounds like 80’s light rock but with an extra dollop of easy does it and fiery sunsets. Peace. Continue reading “laura groves // pale shadows”

nadine carina // things that people love to remember ep

I have been a fan of Ms. Nadine Carina for some time now and she never fails to impress. Now, with the forthcoming release of her beautifully composed Things That People Love To Remember EP, my ears find her at her musical best. These six songs play like the colorful conversation of esteemed and intimate friends or perhaps they’re lovelorn strangers with a burning infatuation to get all up in your personal bubble and ingratiate the softness of your check next to their flesh tone whispers. So much a swirl here it is nigh impossible to select a favorite, and so I christen them all favorites. Be on the look see, for the EP drops November 18th courtesy of On The Camper Records. Peace. sampha // too much + happens (single)

Sampha is an artist with the ability to crack your heart open like an egg. Oh the pleasure and pain runneth over… One his release, Too Much/Happens, this single is overflowing with so much promise it hurts. These soulfully packed songs posses the brash temerity and robust wherewithal to take up residence in your heart without shame or even a single thought of rejection or eviction. The latter track Happens spills beautifully, leaving a listener sodden and smitten beyond one’s desire to resist. As a matter of fact you just might grab your lover and slow dance until  the stars fall into a light-less slumber and the oceans cry themselves into wasted desserts. You can cop the single on iTunes right now, and like me I am certain you’ll play it over and over again. Peace. Continue reading “sampha // too much + happens (single)”

warpaint // warpaint

The band Warpaint is a Los Angeles based quartet comprised of Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), Theresa Wayman (guitar/vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums). To say that this follow-up is “highly anticipated” is an understatement considering the reception that their debut received when it was released at the end of 2010.

Warpaint was recorded and mixed by Flood, aside from two songs that were mixed by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Atoms For Peace). The album was conceived after some truly inspirational writing and recording sessions that took place in The Joshua Tree late last year. The band was joined there by visionary director Chris Cunningham, who has partnered with them for many of the album visuals including the cover. He spent two years filming and photographing the band as they made new music.

Warpaint is a well-oiled machine. They weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy. Both live and on record, Warpaint sound like they’re channeling something truly otherworldly, and mystical. They are also a band that truly enjoys playing together. Emily and Theresa have been friends since they were kids, and the bond that the four of them have is truly special. Peace. Continue reading “warpaint // warpaint”
