KO KO / / Float

Los Angeles-based band KO KO is just brimming with a vibe that pulls double-duty; it makes you smile and dance at the same time. The bands founders, Ryan Lawhorn and brother Taylor Lawhorn proclaim their music is a product of the perpetual sunny weather found in southern California. The band’s shiny brand new bubble-wrapped melody “Float” just makes you want to skip across the sky and taste the rainbow. I’ve also included a few more tracks taken from the bands three-track single release Float. Peace. Continue reading “KO KO / / Float”

chet faker // terms and conditions (video)

I’m adding Melbourne, Australia artist Chet Faker (Nick Murphy) to my list of new favs, and with good reason. What originally, and ultimately, won me over was his sumptuous re-edit of Radiohead’s song “Nude” with its drawn out slow-motion honey drip treatment which clings to your soul like sticky whale song. But that was only the beginning of my new-found addiction. Now, with his latest “Terms And Conditions” I have arrived at the epicenter of full-on famdom and it’s a great place to be. Check out the mini-lineup of songs after the jump, and of course there is a visual to massage your corneas into bliss. Peace. Continue reading “chet faker // terms and conditions (video)”

chromatics // candy (official video)

And the Chromatics just keep ’em coming, which is seriously just peaches and cream for me. Here, I’ve got the 4th single “Candy” from Kill For Love. Still no official details regarding a release date. After the jump listen and watch the Alberto Rossini directed video and let Ruth Radelet‘s tale up there. I’ve also included the “Lady” video as well, so stay for a bit and chill. Peace. Continue reading “chromatics // candy (official video)”

The Fiber // Lead

The Fiber is Sjaak Kassies. I am familiar with his wonderful vocal work with the band Obsidian, and he is known to provide vox for one of my favorite projects Space Flakes. However, he stands pretty good on his own two feet plucking gorgeously on his acoustic guitar and singing his heart out. After the jump, check out his latest single release “Lead” and it is a right fine piece of work. Peace. Continue reading “The Fiber // Lead”

School Of Seven Bells // Ghoststory

Alejandra de la Deheza + Benjamin Curtis = School OF Seven Bells (SVIIB). This Brooklyn-based duo just released the much anticipated LP Ghoststory via Vagrant Records. After the jump you can preview selections from Ghoststory and check out the “Lafaye” (Scissor Sister Remix). And as an extra bonus go to Rolling Stone and peep the premiere of the David Lowery and Toby Halbrooks directed “Lafaye” video, it will send you swooning. Cherub // MoM & DaD

An open letter to Cherub –

Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber don’t stop! When I listen to your music I get it. Yes, it is on the surface party music. It is the pimped-out-wanderlust-fantasy-come-true of two young men from Tennessee. Two guys, who at some point met, became homies, and somewhere along the way gelled into what we know of today as Cherub. But behind, or beneath the party music there lives the heart and soul of your humanity, of what is near and dear to both of your hearts: family and friends and having a damn good time. With your debut album I partied with you, and I shared your music with as many people I thought were cool enough to appreciate it. There were many. Yes, Man of the Hour was indeed some blunt smoking funky sex music. I lit candles to it, and poured drinks aplenty, and as I seduced them one and all, you guys were serenading their feminine libidos (by the way, a Cherub song can be KY Jelly too), and for that I thank the both of you.

But this new joint, this album MoM & DaD, well it’s different. If Man of the Hour was putting down your pimp hand and poppin’ ya colla’ then MoM & DaD is by various degrees different. Different in a good way. This one is mature, while still playful. It’s the good stuff in the locked liquor cabinet.

The first song, “What I Want” is reflective, and has a maturity which sets the tone, it says in quiet whispers, “Yeah, we’re having fun, but we still know where the fuck we come from?” And whether or not we’re sky high on some good dro or chasing ass, when the smoke clears and the crowd is long gone we’re still grounded, blessed and thankful. Up next is “Dear Body” and “You, Me, and Jodeci” I get the feeling these two songs had a ménage à trois with Prince’s Dirty Mind album before they wrote themselves into existence. The next three tracks “La Casa Del Obispo”,  “XOXO” and “Monogamy” sound like a return of the salaciousness I admired on MOTH. Up next, the song “Roxxy” is bathed in the Dirty South vibes that spawned Goodie Mob and Outkast, although they don’t do rap music it has that trunk thumping attitude and swag. And then we stumble upon one of my favorite tracks, “Doses and Mimosas” and this one is a crass finger-fuck to all the haters and naysayers you’ve met along your climb to fame and big $$$’s. There is nothing like a good kiss-my-ass song to get the adrenaline going. Then we have “Hold Me” Ft. Dominic Lolli, which is the last fast dance before the album falls into chill mode, where the next song, “Lyndenberries”creeps into nostalgia and holds a lighter up. It is here that we know you guys are so appreciative of what has come your way. Or rather this dream is what you have both chased down doggedly and manhandled into reality. The song, “All” (Ft. Natalie Prass) is all seduction, this song is a dab of Chanel No. 5 behind her ear or it’s powerful hands pulling off her panties. It’s the kind of song you want to call up in the middle of the night just to hear it breathe against your love muscle (heart).

And finally we arrive at the last song, “Don’t Forget Me” it may be the final song on MoM & DaD, LP, but I suspect it’s only the beginning. Peace. Continue reading “Cherub // MoM & DaD”

bon iver // towers (official video)

It’s not that Justin Vernon of Bon Iver is feeling himself after his 54th Grammy Awards nomination and subsequent wins for Best Alternative Music Album and Best New Artist respectively, anything but. He still remains humble and true to his craft, and in some respects maintains, no elevates his integrity for not bowing to the pressure of the machine by not performing. His reason for shunning the stage and thus losing an opportunity to be seen by some 39.3 million viewers (Nielsen Co.)? Well, it’s simple. Justin Vernon is his own man. It is apparent Justin Vernon loves the music he creates. But it goes beyond that, he respects and cares deeply for his bandmates too. And lastly, he respects his chosen craft and his fans. Don’t me wrong, performing on a Grammy stage is not necessarily a bad thing, it’s not. But Justin Vernon didn’t want to have to jump through hoops to do it. Why go through the staid motions of a heartless collaboration not of his own choosing? And so he demurred. What Bon Iver did is laudable to say the least. And yes, there are more important things in this world than award shows, but what Mr. Vernon represented, was that you can be present at an award, and even graciously accept an award, but you don’t have to be the award show. And he didn’t. Mr. Vernon knows in his heart that the music is infinitely more important than a Grammy award. What a class act.

Now, I almost forgot I was writing about Bon Iver’s new NABIL directed video for “Towers” and it is beautifully shot and choke full with visual metaphor aplenty. And yes, it many even be channeling Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man And The Sea, but that’s a way cool thing too. Peace. Continue reading “bon iver // towers (official video)”

This Is A PopScene #1 // (Various Artist)

I got this in my inbox about 8 hrs ago, and even after I read it I was a bit hesitant about writing a review. Don’t get me wrong, it’s for a good cause. I mean, aside from big business and world governments who can turn their backs on sick children? Well, not me. So, after a spell I sat down at my workstation (kitchen table) and clicked on the bandcamp link and listened. Now, even before I clicked play I scanned the bands listed and not one did I recognize, and for some reason that excited me to no end. Who doesn’t like discovering new music, right? I’ll say this, This Is A Popscene #1 is totally badass for all the right reasons. Sorry for the vulgar language, but badass is the first adjective that came to mind, and it’s an apt and formidable descriptor for the music on this compilation. You’d do well to remember the lot of featured bands here, culled from the UK, Ireland & US, and with a diversity of sounds, that not only compliment, but exemplifies a host of serious up & coming talent. Without a doubt this is a twofer, you buy the great music and you’re supporting a great cause too. As my Pa used to say, “You can’t beat that with a stick.” Peace. Charlotte Gainsbourg // Anna (Tom Furse Remix)

When Charlotte Gainsbourg makes music it is typically something unforgettable. The kind of music you’ll find yourself doing the most mundane things to, i.e. taking long walks, doing the cooking thing in your kitchen, or lazing around your flat pondering whatever or whomever. What I’m getting at here, is her songs are the sounds and the furies of something you live with, something you return to time and again. Not because of their fickleness, but because the songs are substantial, comforting and above all, reliable. Singer-songwriter Charlotte Gainsbourg signals the release of her double-album Stage Whispers with a Tom Furse (of The Horrors) remix of her track “Anna.”  The forthcoming double-LP is produced by Beck and will feature, not only new material, but will also revisit tracks from her well-crafted 2010 release IRM. Listen to the exclusive Tom Furse remix “Anna” on Nowness.com Peace. Continue reading “Charlotte Gainsbourg // Anna (Tom Furse Remix)”
