wampire // giants + video

Grab a kid and make them worship this band.

Portland-based five-pointed star ship Wampire unveil a bangin’ new video (directed by David Fine by the way). The short contains equal parts mirth and the oft times mendicant and tumultuous push-n-pull between hirsute men and blue-eyed women the world over. You’ll adore the ‘Lac emblem, beach dancing, and actor Patrick Dunnam’s longish pit follicles blowing in the Pacific airstream. I did. Yes, I am apologetically weird.

Anyway, the track is one of many (originally there were ten but BeyoncĂ© strong-armed one) from Wampire’s latest ensemble of sound, Curiosity birthed into existence courtesy of Polyvinyl Records. Peace. Continue reading “wampire // giants + video”

the dodos // confidence

Check out the first single release from the San Francisco-based The Dodos. Don’t let the song “Confidence,” fool you with it’s slow-winding river beginnings, because soon enough it becomes roiling white-water and you’ll be pulled under and reeling. It’s been a minute since we last heard from these guys, their righteous No Color EP (2011) was the bomb. Look for their forthcoming LP Carrier, it drops August 27th via Polyvinyl Records.

However, you can get the, “Confidence” digital single via iTunes. You can also pre-order the full LP now. As always, I recommend getting vinyl, which you can get at the Polyvinyl Merch Online Store, but you should hurry the 180-gram blue vinyl LP is limited to 700. I got mine. Peace. Loney Dear // Loney Blues (Video)

When it comes to selecting the music for this music blog, I can only attest to having but a single criteria. Does the music touch me? If it doesn’t then that’s ok too. I’ll leave it where I found it without casting a disparaging word. But for those songs which appeal to me, well then I’m all ears (and heart). Loney Dear hits me right there in the solar plexus, no other way to put it really. Like many, your introduction to the music of Loney Dear will come with this song “Loney Blues” and it will touch you in unexpected places. The song is quiet, almost a whisper full of lament. You’ll turn it up to better understand the words, and what words they are by the way. This is a song which begs you to listen in solitude, without distractions. It is a song so forlorn and shrouded in mendicant black, so much so, it covers one’s heart completely and compels you to admit to bouts of loneliness and despair. This song will reward you on so many levels. I know nothing about Loney Dear other than I like it… a lot, and for now it will suffice. I’ve immersed myself inside of it cocoon like, and it is my hope to emerge out of the other side, if not a butterfly then perhaps … buoyed. Peace. Xiu Xiu – HI

Back from a seemingly endless void, we can finally drop to our collective knees and say, “Thank you!” For those familiar, Xiu Xiu is a band, but to me its the metaphorical maladjusted step-child from the dark uncomfortable regions of your psyche. The neighbors in your mind will shun him, and try desperately to keep their own pristine children away. But unbeknownst, those overly clean children will gravitate towards him. Not because he is cool, but because he’s interesting, and tells the most wonderful stories. Yes, he’s slightly damaged, but wondrously resilient and resolves to never play the victim. He corals them one and all, and out into the world they go. He leads them into the darker parts of town. He learns their secrets and shares his as well. Each child learns things they should never be privy to, and divulge family secrets never previously told. Into the wide wilds of the underworld they trail tears and laughter, and he plies them with nothing more than daring. His arm about a shoulder, gives them song enough to house their pain and lift their chins to the sky. This is the world of Xiu Xiu and the long-awaited album Always will soon be among us, to light up everything. And make us uncomfortably curious for more. Peace.
