teen | tokyo

TEEN is a band manned with four future UN ambassadors for the of Island Fun! And while this may (or may not) be entirely a truism it rings as such. Teeny Lieberson and company have spun out (through not fault of their own) yet another wonderfully jollified diversion. The music this band puts out is multi-useful too. Say you’re one to worry about such mundane things as so-in-so liking you or the overdue mortgage. Well, this is the album you most assuredly need to drop the needle on muy pronto! And just so you know this album pairs incredibly well with a pint or two (ice cream or beer, your choice). The album Love Yes is out right this very moment via Carpark Records. Peace. menace beach | super transporterreum ep

Menace Beach pushes a post-punk rock agenda with an axe to grind and without an ounce of spuriousness. Their current single Super Transporterreum, the title track from their tattered knuckle Super Transporterreum EP, rocks with fuzzed out guitars ringing and a tireless back-beat that just won’t quit. protomartyr | come & see

Protomartyr is more than a Detroit-based band. This is a band which embodies all the good and bad of a troubled city on the cusp of deliverance or economic irrelevancy. Their songs are raw and a bit schizophrenic to the opposite of anything resembling a fault. Yet, there exists beauty of an austere sort of nature. This is post-punk angst revitalized and resurrected from obscurity. Frontman Joe Casey’s dry ice vocals set the tone for the achingly raucous songs which occupy their forthcoming album Under Color of Official Right via Hardly Art Records. These are fast paced odes of pain wrapped with dirty bandages, and the fact that they don’t heal right only lends authenticity of character to an album that is an apt catharsis for despair. This album is an up-all-nighter for damn sure. Look for Under Color of Official Right to drop April 8th. Peace. Continue reading “protomartyr | come & see”

the new self defense // meet me overboard

New York-based alt rockers The New Self Defense give as good as they get. And what’s better than delivering the goods when it comes to rockin’ out? The band’s music has been described as “face melting,” and although my face is still intact my ears are definitely ringing. The band’s latest EP, Meet Me Overboard, released in June 2012 is steeped in the vaulted rock tradition. Check ”em out. Peace. Continue reading “the new self defense // meet me overboard”

check my heart // the pastels

If you like joyous post-punkish rock then The Pastels fit the bill hands down. They got rhythm and a spunky hair in your face sensibility to keep on smile plastered all over your sunny good time. Check out the song Check My Heart and Illuminum Song which is softer and gentler and also the b-side to the ‘Check My Heart’ single. The bands soon to be released album Slow Summits drops later this month (May 27th) via Domino Records. Peace. Continue reading “check my heart // the pastels”

useless eaters // black night ultraviolet ep

A shot of modern guitar punk rock with a pinch of Dengue Fever

Seth Sutton helms the Nashville punk-rockerish band Useless Eaters. And if you like you rock adorned with the fuzzed-out guitar and dirty elements of the primal then the band’s latest 4-song ‘Black Night Ultraviolet‘ EP is what you need in your life right now. It drops July 31st. Peace.

the soft moon // insides

san francisco-based indie artist the soft moon (luis vasquez) is riding a tear in the 80’s post-punk space-time continuum (think joy d,  biz-hous to the iz-hous and love & the rocketeers (if you need a translation shoot me an e-mail) to great effect. listen to the tracks “insides” and “die life,” you can practically feel the layers of reality peeling away one layer of sonic perception at a time. both tracks will appear on the october 30th (us) and november 5th (ue) sophomore album release ‘zeros‘. this is a whole lot of electric voodoo for your ear space. peace. language // ep

lansing, michigan-based band language unleashes a sound which comes pouring out of your speakers like a sunburst of post-punk euphoria. this is music glazed with a vibrancy combined with both ear-aching post-punk pop but tempered by a gritty passion and an unstoppable need to get it out of their collective systems. lead-vocalist christopher minarik channels a hybrid blend of ian curtis (joy division) and peter murphy (bauhaus) with sonic fragments of the pixies thrown in for good measure. and even though the band has its influences it still portrays a visage which is clearly and unequivocally their own. my favorite track is the ep opener, “sault marie,” how it unfurls with a frenetic maelstrom of drums and quicksilver guitar work before chris’s vocals festoon the song with his husky diamond in the rough crooning. great music from a band i will definitely be following. peace. the hunting accident // parks and trees

“Every human being, even the youngest, is already old – that is, so close to death that he or she does not, in any case, have time to efface the accidental quality of the accidents of which his or her life is composed… We human beings are always more our accidents than our choice.” – Odo Marquard “In Defense Of The Accidental”

I lifted the above quote directly from the band The Hunting Accident‘s webpage. But alas, do not mark me thief just yet, because what I do I do for good reason dear one. In the main,, the quote describes us all, but for the band to select and present it as a sort of opening statement speaks volumes to a certain philosophy or acceptance of our inability to fully control anything, let alone our own haphazard destinies.  Yet, perhaps they’re just being clever. Whichever line of reasoning you select to adhere to is quite fine and dandy with moi. Yet, the quote holds true! For here we are, through no fault of our own: you, I, and The Hunting Accident have collided accidentally and wondrously to boot. And this utterly delightful intersection has bought us the bounty of their music. The band’s Trees And Parks 10″ is scheduled to drop July 17th via The New Black label. The songs are laden with punkish ferociousness tempered with rollicking keys and bursts of roguish guitar. After the jump listen to the songs “Aubergine” and “Parks And Trees” you’ll get the feel of barely contained angst and rebellion. The music gets up in your face with its swollen eyes, rent flesh and badge of honor bruises. But these songs are also the stories of us all, the good, the bad and the right of passage ugly ones. Peace.  Continue reading “the hunting accident // parks and trees”
