kid cudi // satellite flight: the journey to mother moon

Kid Cudi seems to always engage in the unexpected. Whether it is penning creative mind-warping lyrics or progressive and on-point mash-ups with unlikely musicians, he keeps it stupefyingly interesting and just-after-the-rain fresh.

The last 24-hours, although a surprise, is a classic Kid Cudi antic, and he drops not just a track or two or even an EP, but a whole full-length LP. Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon is from beginning to end a full-blown astral intra-stellar travelogue. Listen to song by song as it unfurls and revels an event horizon vantage point that’ll illuminate and continually fascinate your ears no end. My favs are Balmain Jeans, Return Of The Moon Man (Original Score) and the Radiohead tinged Troubled Boy. Great release.

You can cop it from Google Play, Amazon and also via iTunes. Peace.

Childish Gambino // Heartbeat (Video)

I have listened to the entire Childish Gambino album Camp countless times, but this here song just stays inside my head and rattles around waiting for opportunities to sidetrack me with its irresistible house=tinged beat. And now there is a video, so now my eyes are going to be looking for ways to get me to watch it often. Do you have the same affliction? Lucky me. Peace. Drake Ft. The Weeknd // Crew Love (Shlomo Remix)

No doubt, 2012 is going to reveal itself to be the year The Weeknd blew up sky-high into the stratosphere. And it seems as if The Weeknd‘s homie Drake is doing whatever he can to make sure  Abel Tesfaye gets a lot of shine. Check this track out, and although it says Drake is featuring The Weeknd it appears that it’s the other way around. Regardless, it’s smooth like a baby seal’s bottom, and Shlomo did a hell of a job making it even more chilli most. Peace. Continue reading “Drake Ft. The Weeknd // Crew Love (Shlomo Remix)”

Scolla // Take What’s Mine (Ft. Rapper Big Pooh & Big Sant)

“In order to get from what was to what will be, you must go through what is.”Anonymous

What do you when life deals you an unfavorable hand? Do you give up before the hard work you put in bears fruit? Hell naw! You do what my homey Scolla does, you blaze your own damn path. When I look at him and see how far he’s come, and still he’s steady grindin! Still, he keeps his Tom Ford haute couture framed eyes on the prize and pushes quality R&B product to the adoring masses (ladies this means you). With his latest entry, the ATLien, Coop produced “Take What’s Mine” Scolla keeps it real and in doing so, sets the tone for what you can expect from and all future releases. ONLY THE BEST! On this track he brings the heat by showcasing legendary North Cackalacky Emcee, Rapper Big Pooh. And if that wasn’t enough he creates space to shine for Mississippi’s southern gentleman General Big Sant. This track is a holy trinity: substance + rhythm + swag = eminently dope. Peace.

Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) – Niggas In Poorest

Life as we know it comes down to one thing, and one thing only. Evolution. Those species whom have failed to adapt, change or mutant have fallen by the way side. It’s a fact. And so it continues today, especially in the mercurial world of music. In the world of entertainment, you either continue to be relevant or perish. Those who continue to generate their own personal phoenix steadily apply this fundamental truism, and continue to rise from the proverbial flames. Dante Terrell Smith knows a thing or two about evolution. In fact, he has embraced it. Throughout his career, first as half of the duo Black Star, as the ying to Talib Kweli’s yang. Then as a solo Rap artist par excellence and successful screen actor. As Mos Def, he continuously advanced a considerable stake in our collective consciousness. And now in 2012 we behold Yasiin Bey. Call it what you will, but this isn’t some media-grabbing ploy which will cultivate in yet another insignificant name change in 12-months. No, I suspect it’s something much deeper and meaningful than just une chose sans valeur. Yasiin Bey translates into the word ‘rich’ and in this case you shouldn’t take it as something which symbolizes material or monetary worth. No, Yasiin Bey is flush with the currency of true knowledge, understanding, self-awareness, but also vision. Yasiin Bey, fka Mos Def, has not rested on his laurels. By most standards his career has been a successful one. Embodying his various persona’s as rapper/poet and actor and through it all, he has stayed hungry. Indeed, Yasiin Bey is inhaling rarefied air, but yet still not content to let up now. With is latest track “Niggas In Poorest” he continues to further expand his legacy. Here he has taken “Niggas In Paris” ala Jay-Z and Kanye West and flipped it supremely. And in the process made it raw and grittier. By taking something overly flamboyant and by some accounts dull, and sharpening into a subtle social weapon. And in the process Yasiin thus lays a solid foundation for what’s to come next. “Don’t get caught up in no throne…” Teach! Peace. Continue reading “Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) – Niggas In Poorest”

PHZ-Sicks // Ft. Young Scolla – Success / Failure (Video)

Up and coming rappreneur PHZ-Sicks joins forces with Detroit’s very own Young Scolla, and the results are something nice. The video, featuring the track “Success/Failure” is smooth like butta’ but pops like colliding atoms at CERN. PHZ-Sicks has been gaining traction since 2010 and is shining bright like the sun. Last year,  January 5th, 2011, PHZ-Sicks released his much talked about The Laws of PHZ-Sicks mixtape, which only left fans wanting so much more. More recently, the young rapper has opened for such rising stars as Wale and J. Cole, but in 2012 I expect this VA. native to break out and gain a wider audience. PHZ-Sicks is without a doubt one of our picks to watch. Peace. Continue reading “PHZ-Sicks // Ft. Young Scolla – Success / Failure (Video)”

Nyemiah Supreme – None Of Ya Business

Hove can’t sleep, while she ridin’ his beat/yeah/who you wit/not grindin’ his lap/but twistin’ his wax…(lol) Yeah, I’m no rapper but Nyemiah Supreme is, and she’s on the come up. Dropping her Bad mixtape in November which birthed the bangers “Real Talk 101” and “House Party.” Expect to hear a lot from her in the coming year and beyond. And since her label RCRD LBL is sweet like that, you can download her latest “None Of Ya Business,” for free here. Peace.
