Basecamp the Nashville, TN trio that’s been on a tear for a few years now (Watch My Back, Smoke Filled Lungs, Shudder). The band’s latest release the Greater Than EP is six tracks of exactly why we love these guys. The fourth track on the EP Esc gets the remix treatment with Esc (Swindail Remix) and the Esc (josh pan & X&G Remix). I can’t decide which version I like the bestest. Maybe you can help me decide? Peace.

throwback thursday: hop along | tibetan pop stars

hop along | tibetan pop stars

Philadelphia indie garage rockers Hop Along gives us a beyond ample excuse to revisit 2012. It was a quaint little album titled Get Disowned and an even obscurer foursome bearing the appellation Hop Along. Seems unassuming enough, except not. Now all would have been well and fine, and the band may well have enjoyed the small unknown existence some bands woefully aspire to be. You know the whole suffering for one’s art thing. Masochistic yes, but it’s a thing. But there was one damn problem, a foible in the plan christened Frances Quinlan. Damn her. If only she’d kept her lovely soundtracked mouth shut and her seductively warped vocals to her damn self we would have all been better off. But alas she didn’t and we’re not. We’re not because I for one can’t get enough of her rustic rock delivery, which make her beautiful pained lyrics all the more so. And, if we’re honest with ourselves it was very specifically the track Tibetan Pop Stars. It was this song, with it’s acrimonious lyrics and paranormal voiced passion. It undone us. You fuckers. I fell in love with an off kilter and highly sentimental ode to heartbreak and enmity. And so yes, Hop Along’s release Get Disowned is a no-brainer for an apt Throwback Thursday nod, and may I suggest you replay all damn day? Thanks Frances. Psst! I also included Hop Along’s wonderful follow up release, Painted Shut (2015).Peace. Continue reading “throwback thursday: hop along | tibetan pop stars”

Ásgeir | king and cross

Icelandic singer-songwriter Ásgeir manages to pack a whole lot of velutinous artistry into a song thus enabling the lyrics and music to become one and the same. Check out his cover of Wrecking Ball, it transcends sticky Pop-culture and elevates unnaturally and will have you saying Miley who?

On the track King And Cross one is spirited away upon such magical bounty it is nigh impossible not to press repeat. Continue reading “Ásgeir | king and cross”

Our Sunday Best: St. Paul & The Broken Bones | Half The City

Birmingham, Alabama-based sextet, St. Paul and the Broken Bones do the soul man thing to fine affect with their all kinds of sexy fun track Call Me. You can feel the absolute longing in every note! These guys may hail from below the Mason-Dixon line but they might as well be from Detroit, Philadelphia perhaps even Milwaukee or any other northern city with a deep seated and historic doo-wop sound. For proof watch their live KEXP session below. Continue reading “Our Sunday Best: St. Paul & The Broken Bones | Half The City”

mimicking birds | bloodlines

Mimicking Birds opens up a main vein and let’s the essence of audible offerings out. We’re thankful as Sunday parishioners for the track Bloodlines. This song is of such character it’ll manage subtle slights of hand and leaves you wanting to visit often to unravel it’s tricks. But there aren’t any charades here, the music just surrounds you in feelings seldom unleashed. The track Owl Hoots is a flourish of breath stealing vapor and I am enamored like a certain Montague sweet on a beauteous Capulet.

Check out the band’s Eon album out now via Glacial Pace Records. Currently, the band is on tour with Modest Mouse and mayhap you can catch ’em. Peace. Continue reading “mimicking birds | bloodlines”
