Unknown Mortal Orchestra dips a toe into the pseudo-psychotropic wading pool and the results are seismic. The track Multi-Love has all the earmarks of a full-fledged summer jam. The track is lifted from the band’s forthcoming Multi-Love album due to drop May 26th via Jagjaguwar. Peace.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra opens up bold, vulnerable and unapologetic with the lead track from their newly minted Multi-Love release. Triads aren’t just a badass Japanese gang it is also an exploration of what it is and how it is to share loves in the company and lifeship of three.
Ruban Nielson isn’t all smiles about it either, and you can hear the pitch and yaw of a man’s life tested and tried as he comes to terms with polyamory. The songs unfolds in plaintive keys, then Mr. Nielson vularable voice wades in until it is chest deep in it. A flurry of percussion shares the load and then the chorus reaffirms what you thought your heard:
“Multi-love got me on my knee / We were one then become three / Mama, what have you done to poor me / Now I’m half-crazy.”
It is heady stuff surely. Thought provoking and endlessly interesting. But not a novel thing like a sideshow curiosity, but instead an alternate take and exploration into, well, multi-love. In the end, perhaps some loves cannot be contained within the dynamics of the twosome tradition, but instead need to space and the expanse of what three can be. Peace.
