Alternative Dance Music – The Earology Dept.

Embeds allowing bloggers to easily embed videos from Distrify. Just go to any Distrify film page or player and copy the URL. Paste that URL in any WordPress blog and it will automatically be converted to an embedded Distrify player. If you are logged in to distrify.com it will automatically add your affiliate tracking code to your embeds. Make sure you turn on Auto-embeds in your WP settings and also make sure that the URL is on its own line and not hyperlinked (clickable when viewing the post). The plugin also extracts the still image from the film and saves it as the Featured Image for the post. This actually works for any Embed (not just Distrify) that you embed into your WordPress blog. Minus The Bear and their track My Time is one of our gallantly danceable Throwback Thursday selections this week. The reason being? Well, give it a listen and you’ll get a chronic case of the “happy feets”. Don’t worry, it’ll wash off in the shower. The track My Time is included in the band’s Omni (2010) release. It’s the first song on the LP and for good reason. This one made my summer playlist on the strength of his listenability and groovy vivaciousness. Yeppers! I said it so check it out. Unknown Mortal Orchestra dips a toe into the pseudo-psychotropic wading pool and the results are seismic. The track Multi-Love has all the earmarks of a full-fledged summer jam. The track is lifted from the band’s forthcoming Multi-Love album due to drop May 26th via Jagjaguwar. Peace.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra opens up bold, vulnerable and unapologetic with the lead track from their newly minted Multi-Love release. Triads aren’t just a badass Japanese gang it is also an exploration of what it is and how it is to share loves in the company and lifeship of three.

Ruban Nielson isn’t all smiles about it either, and you can hear the pitch and yaw of a man’s life tested and tried as he comes to terms with polyamory. The songs unfolds in plaintive keys, then Mr. Nielson vularable voice wades in until it is chest deep in it. A flurry of percussion shares the load and then the chorus reaffirms what you thought your heard:

“Multi-love got me on my knee / We were one then become three / Mama, what have you done to poor me / Now I’m half-crazy.”

It is heady stuff surely. Thought provoking and endlessly interesting. But not a novel thing like a sideshow curiosity, but instead an alternate take and exploration into, well, multi-love. In the end, perhaps some loves cannot be contained within the dynamics of the twosome tradition, but instead need to space and the expanse of what three can be. Peace.

Finally! One of the best tracks of 2011, “Best Life Of My Time” by Space Flakes has some optical eye candy. I must say the video is as trippy as the song is good. The video looks like the love child of Dr. Seuss and Louis Carol. However, it turns out to be some surreal animation inspired by Emery Hawkins circa 1977. Somehow it is fitting as the perfect representation of rampant, and blatant Western consumptionism. Yet, in the end it is the perfect visual accompaniment to Space Flakes’ sonically superior musical swag. Party on! Peace.

MIXED IN SHEFFIEEELLL! I love it! And I equally love the story of Toddla T and his journey from a milk on his breath 14-year old DJ way back in the day, to the much in demand mixmeister with the frenetic work schedule of today. His career is not only well documented by the numerous mixtapes, collabos, and guest appearances. But, Toddla T’s path showcases what a person can do when they love something; and it becomes their life. But make no mistake, love is only one part of the equation. This seemingly tireless DJ puts in work, and the fruits of his labor are displayed nastily on sonic gems like “Love Like Water” and “Take It Back (Ft. Shola Ama).” And so, I would be doing all of my followers a monumental disservice by not sharing Toddla T with you, right? There is a labyrinth. It twists and turns. Down here the air is earthen and sodden with mystery. You chanced upon it. An echo at first. Then it grows. Upon a stair you climb. Deeper. Lower. The balustrade vibrates, yet you hold tight. There it is. Pulsing. A soft beckoning light, you walk in a trance towards it. You’ve entered the DJ’s sanctum sanctorum; and the frenzied glory of it all bathes you in total euphoria.

You know the feeling when you hear something for the very first time and it bowls you over, right? Well, this is definitely one of those moments, and this is one of those songs. With “Best Life of My Time” musical architects the Koning der Nederspaceaka aka Space Flakes fabulously synthesize a sound edifice which is more than aesthetically pleasing to the ear (if perchance I.M Pei were a maker of music he’d sound like this). This track is filled with cunning beats, serpentine synths, and a bass so seductive it should come with a triple-X rating. Take this journey into sound, because the big wet erogenous zone between your ears will love it. Peace.
