Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon is from beginning to end a full-blown astral intra-stellar travelogue. Listen to song by song as it unfurls and revels an event horizon vantage point that’ll illuminate and continually fascinate your ears no end. My favs are Balmain Jeans, Return Of The Moon Man (Original Score) and the Radiohead tinged Troubled Boy. Great release.

No doubt, 2012 is going to reveal itself to be the year The Weeknd blew up sky-high into the stratosphere. And it seems as if The Weeknd‘s homie Drake is doing whatever he can to make sure  Abel Tesfaye gets a lot of shine. Check this track out, and although it says Drake is featuring The Weeknd it appears that it’s the other way around. Regardless, it’s smooth like a baby seal’s bottom, and Shlomo did a hell of a job making it even more chilli most. Peace.

Those who continue to generate their own personal phoenix steadily apply this fundamental truism, and continue to rise from the proverbial flames. Dante Terrell Smith knows a thing or two about evolution. In fact, he has embraced it. Throughout his career, first as half of the duo Black Star, as the ying to Talib Kweli’s yang. Then as a solo Rap artist par excellence and successful screen actor. As Mos Def, he continuously advanced a considerable stake in our collective consciousness. And now in 2012 we behold Yasiin Bey. Call it what you will, but this isn’t some media-grabbing ploy which will cultivate in yet another insignificant name change in 12-months. No, I suspect it’s something much deeper and meaningful than just une chose sans valeur. Yasiin Bey translates into the word ‘rich’ and in this case you shouldn’t take it as something which symbolizes material or monetary worth. No, Yasiin Bey is flush with the currency of true knowledge, understanding, self-awareness, but also vision. Yasiin Bey, fka Mos Def, has not rested on his laurels. By most standards his career has been a successful one. Embodying his various persona’s as rapper/poet and actor and through it all, he has stayed hungry. Indeed, Yasiin Bey is inhaling rarefied air, but yet still not content to let up now. With is latest track “Niggas In Poorest” he continues to further expand his legacy. Here he has taken “Niggas In Paris” ala Jay-Z and Kanye West and flipped it supremely. And in the process made it raw and grittier. By taking something overly flamboyant and by some accounts dull, and sharpening into a subtle social weapon. Up and coming rappreneur PHZ-Sicks joins forces with Detroit’s very own Young Scolla, and the results are something nice. The video, featuring the track “Success/Failure” is smooth like butta’ but pops like colliding atoms at CERN. PHZ-Sicks has been gaining traction since 2010 and is shining bright like the sun. Last year,  January 5th, 2011, PHZ-Sicks released his much talked about The Laws of PHZ-Sicks mixtape, which only left fans wanting so much more. More recently, the young rapper has opened for such rising stars as Wale and J. Cole, but in 2012 I expect this VA. native to break out and gain a wider audience. PHZ-Sicks is without a doubt one of our picks to watch. Peace.

Hailing from D-Town bka Motown Danny Brown is representing Detroit to the illest. Don’t sleep on his latest  mixtape XXX either, it’s like listening to weed smoke and used condoms, that is if weed smoke and used condoms could rap. Danny Brown’s flow is trill and unapologetic, like graphic memoirs of the dopest homeboy you ever had the pleasure of channel surfing his inner most thoughts. Contrary to what the naysayers are saying, Hip-Hop/Rap is growing, and it ain’t going anywhere. Or rather, it is going, everywhere! It has sprouted wings and has flown to parts known and unknown. And a significant part of hip-hop/raps growth is suburbia. And I’m not just talking white boys here, but their presence is being felt. Detroit’s homeboy, Eminem was the first white boy to blow it up big time, but now with the likes of Yelawolf, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and among this lyrically blessed clique you can count on Morrisville, Pennsylvania’s own Asher Roth to bring it. These guys aren’t slouches either, each can hold his own against most rappers out here today. The track “Common Knowledge,” from his latest Pabst & Jazz is testament enough. And please reserve judgement until you have a chance to sit back, crack a cold Levitation Ale open and sip from the equally chill Pabst & Jazz. Peace
