Summer Camp // Life

Summer Camp has new material with the debut of their song, “Life.” The track begins with sweet dollops of solo piano, but then Elizabeth Sankey‘s vocals slink in and things heat up a few thousand degrees. But what’s also noteworthy is the equally sexy Jeremy Warmsley arrangement, as it buoys and blossoms into a totally hypnotic and potent rare flower.  And this is only a preview of the duos five-song Always  EP, which is scheduled to drop in July in North America via Apricot Recording Company/ Moshi Moshi Records. And if you’re not familiar, also check out the bands well received, and critically acclaimed debut Welcome to Condale LP (2011). Peace. Continue reading “Summer Camp // Life”

Yeasayer // Henrietta

The music world’s art nouveau equivalent of Handiedan, or dare I say Ted Vasin, is the pop- impresarios Yeasayer. Today internet buzz clearly belonged to the discovery of their song, “Henrietta,” running rampant all over the web. Our man of the hour Sam, over at the most excellent music blog We All Want Someone To Shout For, says the song was recently shipped via CD to fans on the band’s mailing list. Check out  the track see recent tour dates below. Peace.  Continue reading “Yeasayer // Henrietta”

Drift Wood Miracle // Cuidadé EP

This is moody music. Sounds steeped and finished within interrupted joy and extended longing. The Cuidadé EP is a rucksack sewn taught with strands of nighttime thread. Inside this satchel are three charms. The first song, “Cabin In The Snow,” glistens with a gaunt face hid in half-shadow, with tears of past remembrances spilling. And, for a short time an ink smeared sky clears bearing a full moon, its light offers solace briefly; only until the dark clouds close and surround again. The second talisman, “Call My Name” is a cold carved stone with the scaly vibrations of an unsure heart. It whispers caution on a raspy wind, and you turn twist in your bed, until an unresolved pain groans against the coming burden of morn. And third item, “Brother’s Blood” is a wretched phylactery. It weaves tendrils of sad emotion against stumbling heart. This last song smells of death and ash; of light chased from eyes and laughter plucked of mirth. But strangely, it is the strongest of the three, for the sour fruit of its lament bears the seeds of hope.

This is the Cuidadé EP, and it gives the songwriter and musicians who’ve conjured it reason and space enough to mourn and rage beneath an apathetic and heavenly scrim. And in the end, the music converses with a ghost, a ghost gone but not forgotten. This is painfully beautiful music. Peace. Continue reading “Drift Wood Miracle // Cuidadé EP”

Now, Now // Threads (Video) Cast A Vote on mtvU

I am a big fan of Minnesotans Now, Now and hopefully once you get a musical whiff of their homemade brand of songcraft you’ll be too. This trio consists of Cacie Dalager (Vocals, Guitar), Jess Abbott (Vocals, Guitar), and Brad Hale (Drums, Synth). And right now you can vote for the band’s video for the song “Threads” currently on rotation  at mtvU. You can vote as many times you deem it psychologically necessary.  So, if you love the band like I do that means you’ll vote for them like a honey bee voting for the queen of the hive. Nathan K. // Leave Them (Official Video) (Our Sunday Best)

If one could take all the suffering and beauty of Michigan. Its many closed factories and depressed economy, contrast all the dark negative reality with the natural beauty found in the more rural aspects of our environs; the running rivers, those deep blue lakes, the white-tail deer, and the wild turkeys. Take all this and distill it into song. Nathan K. provides those songs, narrates our state of being into beautiful odes. Songs forlorn and gorgeous with hope and a relentless optimism. Watch the Xack Gibson directed video for Nathans’ song “Leave Them” from the forthcoming record Dishes, out June 26, 2012. Peace. Supreme Cuts // Whispers In The Dark

Chicago-based astralnauts Mike Perry and Austin Kjeultes are Supreme Cuts, emphasis on ‘Supreme’! This talented duo take hip hop, and whatever else they can get their hands on, and orchestrate it into a hybrid of shape-shifting sonics. Their forthcoming album Whisper in the Dark, via Dovecote Records, is due to drop July 12th. But until then I got a little something sumpin’ sumpin’. Also, I after the jump you can listen to the dynamic duo’s Trouble EP, of which the opening track “Silkk” is pure celestial goodness. Peace. Continue reading “Supreme Cuts // Whispers In The Dark”

Cherub // XOXO (don winsley remix)

Perennial funksters (not hipsters) duo Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber bka Cherub are funky! Imagine if Rick James’ sweat was crystallized into pill form, dusted with the liquored breath of the best dance music available, then served piping hot between the sweaty thighs of R&B and Soul music personified in the form of Pam Grier in her heyday. Yes, it’s an image you won’t soon forget, and like the Don Winsley remix of “XOXO” it’s a track your ears aren’t likely to soon forget either.  So go ahead, douse yourself in this vat of clarified soul essence, and they’ll be mopping up your puddled form off the dance floor as soon as the track ends. Peace. Continue reading “Cherub // XOXO (don winsley remix)”
