Mansions On The Moon // Athens (Video)

Intergalactic travel always goes better with something bangin’ out of the on-board speaker system, and we got the perfect space-bending accompaniment. Check out the latest single from Mansion On The Moon and you’ll thoroughly dig their track “Athens.” This is a Pharell Williams-produced joint, so you get his hit-making Midas touch. But the bedrock of every song is still MOTM‘s typical brand of fare from this L.A.-based trio. Lane Shaw‘s vibrant drums, supporting Ted Wendler‘s dreaming shoegazy guitar, along with the perfect dash of Ben Hazlegrove‘s mellifluous vocals and lightly funkified synths. Head on over to mansionsonthemoon.com for much more of their soon to be released Light Years EP. Peace. Continue reading “Mansions On The Moon // Athens (Video)”

Shelf Nunny // Taboo (Ft. Kaka Smitty)

Although many claim it never rains in southern California, obviously they weren’t talking about funky beats and sly rhythms. Welcome to the sticky sounds of Santa Cruz-based producer Shelf Nunny. Sit back and submerge yourself in these tricky audibles, and let them caress you ear palette like the adept fingers of a certified music masseuse. With this latest track “Taboo” Ft. Kaka Smitty it’s raining complex bass galore, interspersed with the mesmeric vocals of Kaka Smitty. If  Shelf Nunny is getting his music making feet wet, then I am impressed.  I can’t wait to hear what he offers up once he dives head-on into the full breadth and width of his infinite universe of possibilities. Loney Dear // Loney Blues (Video)

When it comes to selecting the music for this music blog, I can only attest to having but a single criteria. Does the music touch me? If it doesn’t then that’s ok too. I’ll leave it where I found it without casting a disparaging word. But for those songs which appeal to me, well then I’m all ears (and heart). Loney Dear hits me right there in the solar plexus, no other way to put it really. Like many, your introduction to the music of Loney Dear will come with this song “Loney Blues” and it will touch you in unexpected places. The song is quiet, almost a whisper full of lament. You’ll turn it up to better understand the words, and what words they are by the way. This is a song which begs you to listen in solitude, without distractions. It is a song so forlorn and shrouded in mendicant black, so much so, it covers one’s heart completely and compels you to admit to bouts of loneliness and despair. This song will reward you on so many levels. I know nothing about Loney Dear other than I like it… a lot, and for now it will suffice. I’ve immersed myself inside of it cocoon like, and it is my hope to emerge out of the other side, if not a butterfly then perhaps … buoyed. Peace. Santigold – Big Mouth (Video)

I’ve been waiting for this for what seems like forever! New music from Santigold is always a positive, especially when it is as fun as her first release “Big Mouth,” from the forthcoming Master Of My Make-Believe. This song is a lot of things and none of them are bad. It’s raucous, a bit odd-ball, and laced with a sweet dancehall sound to keep you high-stepping deep into the night. Check out the Cody Critcheloe directed video below. Visit santigold.com and get your free Bigmouth download. No official release date on the LP, but I’ll keep you posted.  Peace. First Aid Kit – The Lion’s Roar (NPR’s First Listen)

When you listen to the new LP The Lion’s Roar from the sister-duo First Aid Kit your slowly transported to an erstwhile age, or so it seems. You get the feeling of being in a country before electricity or running water, with all the rustic beauty and heartbreaks of a simpler time. Johanna and Klara Söderberg are no doubt going to have a great year and dare I say, a wonderful career. You can check out the entire release on NPR’s First Listen and be swept away by their captivating songs. Peace. Continue reading “First Aid Kit – The Lion’s Roar (NPR’s First Listen)”

The Twilite Tone – Little Dragon // Ritual Union (Remix)

I am really feeling the ear pleasing sounds of The Twilite Tone.  This CHICaGO bred groove theorist has gone and done it again. Right now, I’m starting my day off with something more potent than my usual cup of triple-shot espresso. Listen to his Little Dragon’s Ritual Union Remix and you just may forget all other obligations. Anthony Khan bka as The Twilite Tone is making Chicago proud (and your ears too), and you can interpret this post as my virtual fist bump to him. BOOYAH! Like you, I’m looking forward to future releases, and is there a LP in the works? We can only hope so, and keep our fingers crossed. Peace. alpines // cocoon + video) + why + maya jane coles + carly simon cover

Forgive me. When I first heard the London-based duo Alpines I thought Kate Bush and Siouxsie Sioux had somehow cloned themselves into one supremely gifted entity, but alas ’twas not the case. What was the case? Well, I had chanced upon none other than the lovely Catherine Pockson and the musically stalwart Robert Matthews all up in my ear space!  And the more I heard, I more I grew curious for more. What nerve! I’ve no idea how such groove splashed sounds could have escaped me, but I’ve reconciled my shortcomings with this posting. By the way, I’m enamored to the gills with the Pop/Operatic vocals of Ms. Pockson. So much so, I find myself constantly clicking repeat as I raptly listen again and again. The song Cocoon is an August 2011 release, for which the Hope directed video appears below. And the track Why was released this past November with a little help from the dynamic Mary Jane Coles. Enjoy and as always. Peace. Continue reading “alpines // cocoon + video) + why + maya jane coles + carly simon cover”

Porcelain Raft – Strange Weekend

I knew something was really special about this album. It only took a single listen, and now it’s officially in the arsenal of my collection of albums to light candles by, or put a fire in the grate and cuddle up to the special lady in my life. Mauro Remmidi is Porcelain Raft, and he has done something wonderful here with the forthcoming release Strange Weekend. The LP is a chilled out slightly ambient mixture of Pop music, melded together exotically with the sounds the universe makes when its in a romantic mood. You’ll agree after you hear Mauro Remmidi’s voice.

Look for Strange Weekend to drop January 24th on the Secretly Canadian label. If you like the sound of Porcelain Raft coming out of your speakers go ahead and Pre-Order Strange Weekend. Peace. Continue reading “Porcelain Raft – Strange Weekend”

Crystal Fighters – Free Downloads

In opposition to the internet and severe encroachment of personal and public freedoms Crystal Fighters is thumbing their collective noses at the SOPA and PIPA bills making their collective way through Congress. The now so much cooler band is offering Free Downloads of their I’ll-still-pay-for-it-anyway music. According to the Los Angeles Times the tech behemoth known as Google, reports that somewhere in the ballpark of 4.5 million people signed the anti-SOPA petition yesterday (I was among them). So, if you want to have the right to continue having unrestricted access to music blogs like this one, as well the countless other great blogs, lets get educated and take a stand.

Rusko – Someone To Love (Video)

He may not part the crowds like Moses parted the Red Sea but he get’s ’em onto the dance floor and out of their seats. Not bad for a bloke from Leeds. And in anticipation of a March 27th release for his forthcoming LP Songs,  via Diplo’s label Mad Decent and Downtown. Dubstep agent provocateur and producer Christopher Mercer bka Rusko gives us something to groove to right where you stand. Check out the musical chaos theory of “Someone To Love.” This track is ready-made for a good time, even if you’re old enough to be an AARP member. Are you scratching your head? Don’t worry it’ll all make sense after you watch the video below. Peace. Continue reading “Rusko – Someone To Love (Video)”
