Rustie – After Light

Let’s get the night heading in the right direction. In the early stages of October we witnessed the release on an excellent debut album titled Glass Swords by Rustie via Warp Records. If you haven’t already check out the track “After Light” which is definitely a highlight on the album.

The Morning Clouds – A Walk Home (Video)

Listening to The Morning Clouds is always delightful. However, watching their latest video for the song “A Walk Home” is tough. But maybe that’s the point. Throughout the entire video we are served a lukewarm heaping helping of starched work-a-day glibness. It’s uncomfortable to watch, mostly because it turns a magnifying glass in on the lives we live and how we chose to lead them. The video begs the question: Do we want a life of cookie-cutter mediocrity or do we search for something of real substance?  But alas, we’re all passengers, or even more depressing, participants in the rat race in one way or another. The Morning Clouds dropped their latest LP on October 11th, so it’s available now. I fear though, if I watch the video again I many just get myself a “life coach”, Peace.

Zulu Winter – Let’s Move Back to Front

What do you get when you take Will Daunt (vocals, guitar), Iain Lock (bass), Dom Millard (keyboards), Henry Walton (guitar) and Guy Henderson (drums) and put them all together? Give up? Well, what you get is a fantastic band calling themselves Zulu Winter. A collective of musical mates that are definitely going places. I’m not going to muddy the waters with sonic references to other bands. Frankly speaking, I don’t give a damn who they sound like. Right now I just know I’m picking up what they’re throwing down, so to speak. I recommend that you get these songs and put them in your iPod STAT! I’ve provided  a few samples of their music below. Listen to the buoyant “Let’s Move Back to Front” and the beautifully sedate “Never Leave”. Make up your own mind, but I kind of think I know how this is going to end. You pre-ordered it already didn’t you? Peace.

Check out the “Never Leave” video, it was directed by the very talented David Higgs. Peace

The Black Keys – Lonely Boy

Check out the 1st single from the forthcoming Black Key’s LP El Camino. Watch the “Lonely Boy” video below. You can also cop the 7″ single at your local Independent record store on November 25th (Black Friday). Make sure to mark you calendars for the Danger Mouse produced El Camino album. Its expected to drop December 6th via NONESUCH Records. Peace.

You Won’t – Three Car Garage

I’m no hippie, well maybe I am in spirit. But needless to say I didn’t come of age in the 60’s. However, I do know who Simon & Garfunkel were. The songs of Massachusetts band You Won’t remind me of S&G and the general carefree vibe that was oft associated with the Flower Power era. The song “Three Car Garage” is a bonafide keeper and although this song has been out for a lil’ bit it will be a mainstay on my playlist. Enjoy. Peace.

Mazzy Star – Common Burn

Somethings only get better with time, and one of those things right now is Hope Sandoval‘s voice. It’s been 15-years since the incarnation known as Mazzy Star last released new music, but I suppose better late than never, right? Check out the A-side track “Common Burn” below. Expect the LP to drop on October 31st on Hope Sandoval’s label Ryhmes Of An Hour. Peace.

chromatics // kill for love (officail video)

The Chromatics create sensual electro-pop deeply steeped in post-New Order atmospherics. As a testament to the longevity of their sound, and a growing fan base their song “Tick Of The Clock” made the line-up on the Drive Soundtrack way back in the day. The album Night Drive debuted back in 2007 and still it holds it’s own against any electro-pop music today. The Chromatics are scheduled to drop the Kill For Love LP early next year (January?). Until then we’ve got the Alberto Rossini directed video for the Eurodisco single “Kill For Love” below. The video has a very retro look which I’m totally diggin’. When lead-singer Ruth Radelet starts “Kill For Love” off by saying, “Everybody’s got a secret to hide…” her voice makes me want to confess my latest secret, I love this song. Well, it’s not a secret anymore. Check it out. Peace.

Kate Bush – Wildman

It’s been well over a decade and change since we’ve been blessed with something new from the incomparable Kate Bush. Ms. Bush set the standard for the eclectic chanteuse way back in the day. Now with the coming release of her forthcoming LP 50 Words For Snow the music world is a twitter (literally) with excitement. Check out the single “Wild Man” and you can easily hear that she still has the ability to stretch out into new and exciting realms. I’ve waited too long for this and finally my life is complete. You can pre-order the new album at her Fish People site. The single “Wild Man” is out now and the album release will drop November 21st. Peace.

Small Black – Moon Killer

Brooklyn chillwave/synth-pop quartet Small Black follow-up last year’s diabolically good New Chain LP with a mixtape to tide fans over. The mixtape is set for a November 11th release. Check the title track “Moon Killer” below. Enjoy. Peace.

robot koch // the other side + video

I clicked it. I like the deluge of electrified & sun dappled apple blossoms thrown into my face, dripping sweet sap into my eardrums relentlessly. It’s Robot Koch doing his damn thing. If you’re in need of something quirky and sonically imbued with mystical beats, beats that don’t have the good sense to stop before overloading you with undistilled glee. And if you need such a thing in your life then Robot Koch (that name is tickling me) has your name stenciled all over it. Check out his latest LP offering The Other Side, then go and investigate his previous lambs to slaughter: namely the albums Death Star Droid and Songs For Trees and Cyborgs will leave rug burns on delicate places, but you won’t mind at all. Stream the entire The Other Side LP below. My favs include the tracks “Nitesky ft. John LaMonica” and “Bugs ft. Nielson”. So, drip some of this on your frontal cortex and flood your senses with sweet extraterrestrial honey. Peace. Continue reading “robot koch // the other side + video”
