Night Beds // Even If We Try

I knew a woman, lovely in her bones, When small birds sighed, she would sigh back at them … -Theodore Roethke

I am going to take liberty with Theodore Roethke’s opening line of his poem “I Knew A Woman” and offer this, “I know a song, lovely in its bones, when small birds sighed, song would sigh back at them…” The song “Even If We Try” by the Night Beds make me sigh. I’m sure I am not the only one. I am moved by the music of Night Beds, and this song, like so many others they’ve penned, positions me into introspective poses. The music is every thing it makes of a listener: regretful, forlorn, bitter, sad or joyful because you’ve skirted romantic disaster this lifetime. But for those of us who’ve suffered and learned through heartache, this song is a whiskey-soaked barb beneath the skin covering a bruised heart. I’ve think you’ll like this song, and I hope you find your way through it, but don’t rush. Take all the time you need, for its beauty is amplified with each and every listen. Go to the band’s website at nightbeds.org where you can get two FREE downloads from the Night Beds forthcoming album Country Sleep. Peace. Continue reading “Night Beds // Even If We Try”

Spanish Prisoners // Know No Violence (Video)

Check out the Jono Chanin directed video for Spanish Prisoners’ first single “Know No Violence,” from their Gold Fools album. The video has all the snowy goodness of the white winter season, plus a delusional amnesiac hipster chick. Yes, good stuff. I really love this song, so much so that I’ve provided the lyrics so you too can all sing along. I am really too nice to you guys. Peace.

La Sera // Break My Heart

Vivian Girls alum Katy “Kickball” Goodman returns with her project La Sera and the first single “Break My Heart” is the spitting image of Lo-Fi love gone asunder beneath the hammer drop of irreconcilable differences and a hail of fuzzy guitar. And this is only the first song! I can hardly wait to hear what the rest of her 2nd solo album Sees the Light sounds like. Hopefully, there is more gorgeous music. Peace. Toddla T // Love Like Water (Toddla T Remix)

MIXED IN SHEFFIEEELLL! I love it! And I equally love the story of Toddla T and his journey from a milk on his breath 14-year old DJ way back in the day, to the much in demand mixmeister with the frenetic work schedule of today. His career is not only well documented by the numerous mixtapes, collabos, and guest appearances. But, Toddla T’s path showcases what a person can do when they love something; and it becomes their life. But make no mistake, love is only one part of the equation. This seemingly tireless DJ puts in work, and the fruits of his labor are displayed nastily on sonic gems like “Love Like Water” and “Take It Back (Ft. Shola Ama).” And so, I would be doing all of my followers a monumental disservice by not sharing Toddla T with you, right? And really that’s what the responsible citizen does upon discovering good music. See how you can get yours after the jump. Peace. Continue reading “Toddla T // Love Like Water (Toddla T Remix)”

princess chelsea // the cigarette duet (video)

When checking out the cutesy song The Cigarette Duet by Princes Chelsea that’s gone viral on Youtube, some words of caution. Don’t make the mistake of expecting the rest of the songs featured on her debut album ‘Lil Golden Book as being equally didactic. Although it may appear Ms. Chelsea Nikkel has a thing against societies double-trouble legal vices; cigarettes and booze (listen to Too Fast To Live as well) it’s all good though. But don’t worry Princess C. isn’t all about composing quirky moralistic pop odes. No, she likes to have fun just like everybody else. I swear. If you’re looking for something that is witty and filled with, in some cases, maudlin dream-mare, then Princess Chelsea is the one for you. And if you like visions of Alice In Wonderland gone all Gothic, and I do, then you like her just fine.  I love her song, “Yulia” which is delivered with clipped no-nonsense enunciation, and the video for the song only lends further to her off kilter style and adroit observations. For more, visit her SoundCloud for gems like “Caution Repetitive” and “Goodnight Little Robot Child” as well as several other songs from Princess Chelsea, our pop royalty debutante from Auckland, New Zealand. Peace. Continue reading “princess chelsea // the cigarette duet (video)”
