Tribes // Sappho (Video)

The band Tribes always manage to bring it, and bring it they do with their latest album Baby, which contains a whole lot of raucous noise intertwined with a few tender moments thrown in for good measure. And their song “Nightdriving” is reminiscent of that one song from XTC’s Skylarking LP circa 1996, yeah you know the one. Is it me or does listening to this album tell you these guys are lovers and not fighters, and that’s a good thing. Peace. Continue reading “Tribes // Sappho (Video)”

the ting tings // soul killing

Jules De Martino and Katie White definitely have a good thing going, especially with the mega awesome Sounds From Nowheresville LP on their hands. My ears are finicky listeners but they’ve practically salivating for much more when I play the latest from The Ting Tings. This new joint is practically jumping off the player and onto the dance floor. Now, here is my disclaimer, if you break something while dancing to this I am not liable. Check out the “Hang It Up” Banana Dynamite Remix plus more after the jump. Peace. Continue reading “the ting tings // soul killing”

perfume genius / / hood + normal song + dark parts

As always, there exists much fragility in the world and the songs of Perfume Genius not only embody those easily broken parts of the human heart and  soul; they expand upon them in the role of one who has endured much. When I first listened to the musical renderings of 26-year-old Seattle resident Mike Hadrea I was at once struck, not only by the beauty of the songs, but also the very raw and uncontrived nature of Mr. Hadrea’s voice, for it is the voice that conveys the pain and exposed nerve endings of one whose felt much the dark underpinnings of heartache. Listen to the songs, “Hood”, “Normal Song” and “Dark Parts” all of which are taken from the album Put Your Back N 2 It (2012).  I’m certain you’ll love them enough to want them all for yourself as salve against the small meteors that assail one’s existence from time to time.  Peace.  Continue reading “perfume genius / / hood + normal song + dark parts”

The Mary Onettes // Our Love’s Taking Strange Ways

Right away your swept away by the fresh picked vibe of the song, “Our Love’s Taking Strange Ways” by the wondrous, and always unpredictable band The Mary Onettes. One of cool things I truly love about today’s musical landscape, is how one can find great music the globe over. Yes, The Mary Onettes are from Sweden, but they could just as easily be from LA, NYC, as well. Their new Love Forever 12″/EP is available on iTunes and Amazon. You can also get a FREE DOWNLOAD. Peace. Continue reading “The Mary Onettes // Our Love’s Taking Strange Ways”

Hysterical Injury / / Dead Wolf Situation

Admittedly, I know little about this kick-ass duo, other than they are Annie Gardiner on vocals/bass and on drums Tom Gardiner. Sister/Brother combo? Don’t know. Is their music giving me something to smile about? Hell fuckin’ YES! The music they make is hard-edged like a street brawlers’ brass knuckles, so be careful where you point the songs coming out of your speakers. Check out Hysterical Injury and their debut LP Dead Wolf Situation, and believe me it’s alive a kicking in your teeth. By the way, those little yelps Annie does, totally do something crazy to the mechanical inner workings of my soul. Peace. Continue reading “Hysterical Injury / / Dead Wolf Situation”

Computer Magic / / Trinity

I’ve been listening to Danielle “Danz” Johnson bka Computer Magic for a couple of years now, and the growth has been nothing less than amazingly well deserved. Funny, I remember when the only song by CM that was available on iTunes was VHS. But what a difference a few years can make. Currently, Computer Magic is signed with a cool label, and you can best believe there is now more than one song available on iTunes. Give her listen and let me know if your like her too. Peace. LA // KVLKD / / Taj Mahal *Video

The Etienne Perrin directed video “Taj Mahal” for rock/electro band La//KVLKD is not so surreptitiously a visual reference to Leonardo Da Vinci’s most famous painting. Yet, it’s not the only obvious occurrence here either. Take the music for example. La//KVLKD have taken two different sounds (rock & electro) and smashed them together gorgeously. And if you thought the song “Taj Mahal” was good, then check out the band’s song “Banderoles” it’ll hit you in all the right places and “Symptoms” is just sonically delicious. Peace. Severin / / Everything Breaks EP / / Macabea *Video

Perhaps when the sun sets is when Danny Sanchez and Elizabeth Anne Martin shine brightest. It’s an odd, yet totally mesmerizing music this duo makes. It’s skittish and naughty, not as playful as most electro music you may be familiar with, but just as enjoyable. Especially, after you’ve imbibed your chosen elixir and are laying next to your chosen “friend” for an intimate evening of … well, you fill in the blank. The music of Severin is more akin to the murkier dungeons within one’s mind, not accustomed to much light and totally comfortable luxuriating or basking in the dimness on your darker secrets. It is totally appropriate, and highly suggested that you wait until nightfall to begin your journey into their Everything Breaks EP, and although it doesn’t officially drop until March 19th you can have a listen after the jump. And for an in-depth interview about the origins of Severin check out their interview at www.londontheinsidemusic.com. Peace. Continue reading “Severin / / Everything Breaks EP / / Macabea *Video”

Heliotropes // 7″

Nya Abudu, Cici Harrison, Amber Myers and Jessica Numsuwankijkul aren’t much like what one is used to hearing from a rock/alt band. This band of gypsies elevate, but at the same destroy expectations. Theirs is a funky, grungy and psyched-out rocket ride, in short a totally convincing rock deluge; a mix and match affair with shards of light pouring in from a wide range of influences. You may hear swathes of sound reminding you of early Jane’s Addiction, particularly 1988’s Nothing’s Shocking. Also, there are flashes of Seattle-sound, think Sound Garden. There is even some fine needle work reminiscent of Black Francis and his Pixies. But make no mistake these ladies are not copy cats by any means. They are bringing their own brand and stylistic approach to what they envision rock to be, and the results tug at your ears like a heavy-handed anvil of rock-n-rolla. Check out the band’s 7″, which includes the gorgeously badass songs “Ribbons” and “Love’s True Knot” believe me you’ll thank me. However, before running Heliotropes through your speakers you may want to update your insurance policy and get that “ear splitting” coverage you’ll surely be needing. Peace.

Even if you missed Brooklyn-based band Selebrities alluring 2011 LP Delusions you still have time to make amends. And maybe it is or isn’t about making Jer Robert Paulin and Max Peterson happy, but dammit you gotta please the  Maria Usbeck for crying out loud she’s providing the sweet ass vocals. The band has a new EP titled Night Heat dropping this month. So listen to the song “Paraiso” and let that be the only reason you click play all over again. Peace.
