kilo kish // k+

It is so true. Perhaps even truer than true. Kilo Kish has had a very spectacular year. By almost anyone’s estimation or finger in the wind, 2013 was a pivotable 365 days for this young mc/muse/model. Indeed Ms. Lakisha Robinson turned a lot of heads in her direction. Her brand of music manages to be a whole bunch of things at once. It is easy to hear the playful creativity in her music too. The songs sound more akin to intimate journal entries rather than tracks laid in a studio. As if the secret world of a private diary somehow managed to gather beats as clothes and walk the soundscape of our collective ears. If you haven’t already check out her Mixtape K+. But don’t let her coy coquettish delivery fool you, there is a bit of meat and potatoes on them musical bones. If anything her’s is a balanced mix of light-hearted levity and serious girl talk, and what is clears from tracks 1 through 10, is she is one of us. All the attention and the  Elle, Vogue, etc. photo shoots haven’t gone to her head. Oh and her treatment of Jordan Knight’s (Give It 2 U) deserves a place on your slow jams mix. Peace. broken bells | after the disco | video | our sunday best

Broken Bells is Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) and James Mercer (The Shins.) Their forthcoming sophomore LP is After the Disco. Chances are you have never quite heard anything like it. It has an old school appeal ala 1970’s. And although it may reference the era of bell-bottoms and chain smoking it doesn’t sound staid or dated.

This is revamped art deco references and soft fizzy Pink Champagne afterglow. As on their debut self-titled release Broken Bells this one too breaks ground. The first single Holding On For Life is something that just works. It has all the mysterioso of clandestine and soulful  heartache. There is a desperation which snakes like the voodoo beats of ancient drums, but it isn’t at all dour. This is spirited music and tantalizingly so.

The After The Disco LP drops February 4th, 2014 through Columbia Records. Peace. Continue reading “broken bells | after the disco | video | our sunday best”

py // swimming slow

Py trades in vocals, and it is with her most valuable asset you can count on time and time again to deliver the goods. Her voice seems as if it were fashioned from ice and imbued with the warmth of sunshine. It’s complex for sure, and oxymoron of sorts. But works it does. Listen to her new single, Swimming Slow. It amazes, as it spills seductively and enlivens even the most mundane moments of one’s day. Peace. Continue reading “py // swimming slow”

james vincent mcmorrow | red dust | video

James Vincent McMorrow breaks away from what was a nice comfy safe bet. But with talent such as his it isn’t much of a gamble at all. On his latest track Red Dust the Irishman threads his chilling voice through stalwart beats fueled by an earful of rhythm and blues. It is gorgeous to hear, almost gospel like. This is the lead single from his forthcoming release Post Tropical due out January 14, 2014 through Vagrant Records. I already pre-ordered mine, so what are you waiting for? Peace.

Moby is pleased to announce he has made a lyric video for his next single “Almost Home” a collaboration with Damien Jurado taken from his recently released 11th album Innocents.

The video was recorded at Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles where Moby was surrounded by beautiful dogs and cats–all deserving of love and good homes, especially during this holiday season.

teenage spaceship | how to dress well | aaron read & tom krell | smog cover

On a cold day I have just walked back indoors. In from the December cold. Stomping my booted feet in the breezeway. Then. Into a warm kitchen. Inside I settle in with hot green tea with a bit of raw honey. I sit at my desk and fire up the Mac. I log into various sites and social media. Sign into my blog. I search for something that’ll inspire me. I search the many submissions in two email accounts. Plow through several blogs. Then. I find How To Dress Well’s cover of Teenage Spaceship and it glistens like the melting icicles out of doors. It cracks like the falling branches and falls into the chasm of my heart. I post this on my blog I am sated for the moment, but soon I’ll forages yet again. Peace. Continue reading “teenage spaceship | how to dress well | aaron read & tom krell | smog cover”

Autograf. What am I supposed to do with this? The Marvin Gaye Grapevine (Autograf Remix) leaves me reeling. Leaves a brotha’ clicking repeat. Peace. Continue reading “marvin gaye // grapevine (autrograf remix) + free download”

drift wood miracle | my condition

Drift Wood Miracle make the holiday very merry and especial indeed. The young men of music hailing from Durham, NC break out another sonic boom birthed from the echo chambers of their combined hearts. The Earology Dept is thrilled to premiere the band’s Christmas present to their dear fans (me included). My Condition, is the equivalent of a pound of osmium wrapped around a beloved’s velveteen and feather soft kisses.

As a band, comprised of Jack Chapman (lead guitar), Keir Schwarze (bass), Alex Phillips (drums, vocals) and Bryan Diver (rhythm guitar, vocals and keys), they find ways to mix their unique brand of subtle indie pop rock with a nuanced bitter-sweetness, it stirs up the conventional milieu of songcraft and replaces it with surprise aplenty and benevolent lyricism.

On first listen the high-energy on display will draw you in and lead vocalist Byran Diver’s emotive tone seals the deal. And with the palpable and totally tectonic drum-work and enough bootylicious bass play to warrant an NG-17 rating this single will do things to you you’ll want to hear (and feel) again.

So, if your ears were converted by the Cuidadé EP (2011) and The 21st LP (2013) then with My Condition they’ll remain faithful followers of DWM well into 2014 and beyond. And yes, it’s a gift, i.e., FREE DOWNLOAD. Peace.
