ibeyi | river

Ibeyi (French-Cuban twin sisters Kaindé and Naomi Diaz) are the musical offshoots of legendary percussionist Anga Diaz, blaze their own musical trail with the track River. The song is taken from their debut EP Oya release, out now courtesy of XL Recordings. The Ed Morris-directed video finds Kaindé and Naomi submerged within an aquatic medium. surfacing to exhale beautiful lyrics and douse blessings upon us all with evocative incantations, first in English, then finally in Yoruba.

The Oya EP is available on iTunes

But there is more than meets the untrained eye and ear here, and for youthful 19 year olds there is wisdom aplenty. There exists a correlation between their stage name Ibeyi (meaning children of miraculous birth) and the titles and significance of the tracks River and Oya. I’ll let you suss it out on your own. But know this, these songs are more than pretty sounds and eclectic renderings. No simple sound trinkets here. No, there is an observance of tradition, and a love and respect for ancestors at work here. Mad respect, Asé.

Spiritual. Original. Beautiful. Peace. Continue reading “ibeyi | river | official video”

anushka | mansions

Brighton duo Anushka (Victoria Port and Max Wheeler) take music making to new and highly enjoyable directions. Their brand of music is a blend of soulful R&B/electro (think Erykah Badu with futuristic electeroid tendacies) music. To date I haven’t heard a wrong move by the duo. They are on my radar and I expect major success is just around the corner. Anushka’s debut album Broken Circuit is out now courtesy of Brownswood Recordings. Peace. magic hands | limousine | official video

Magic Hands expose their single Limousine to the light of day and it handily outshines the sun. The beatiful (Yes, I said beatiful) track is taken from their upcoming album Let Me Hold You While You Fail all set to drop like an atomic bomb December 9th.

I must also admit, I don’t know much about Lucy Roleff & Alex Badham currently but from what I’ve heard thus far my curiosity is indeed sufficiently piqued. Peace. Continue reading “magic hands | limousine | official video”

mami horror | colours in the sky | that’s nice remix

Miami Horror spruce up one’s day with their bubbly song Colours In The Sky and the That’s Nice Remix makes it well… twice as nice. I couldn’t resist. The track is darn right frolicsome! Also, after the jump throw your ears another lish ear morsel with MH’s brand new single Wild Motion (Set It Free). Here’s hoping to a debut album dropping soon. Peace. chris staples | dark side of the moon | american soft lp

The song Dark Side of the Moon is taken from Chris Staples’ Barsuk Records debut American Soft, available August 12, 2014.

In the end there are no casual Chris Staples fans. The man inspires devotion. The turnaround from casual listener to evangelist is nearly instantaneous. Play his music during a road trip with friends and inevitably someone will ask, “Who is this?” And a lifelong fan is born. Such is the unaffected power of these songs, of this voice. Chris Staples fandom is rewarding and lasting (despite his understated approach to promoting his own work, which — as it should be with all artists — seems secondary to the effort he puts into the making of it). We follow where he leads, and our numbers are growing. Peace. Continue reading “chris staples | dark side of the moon | american soft lp”

mimicking birds | bloodlines

mimicking birds | bloodlines

Mimicking Birds opens up a main vein and let’s the essence of audible offerings out. We’re thankful as Sunday parishioners for the track Bloodlines. This song is of such character it’ll manage subtle slights of hand and leaves you wanting to visit often to unravel it’s tricks. But there aren’t any charades here, the music just surrounds you in feelings seldom unleashed. The track Owl Hoots is a flourish of breath stealing vapor and I am enamored like a certain Montague sweet on a beauteous Capulet.

Check out the band’s Eon album out now via Glacial Pace Records. Currently, the band is on tour with Modest Mouse and mayhap you can catch ’em. Peace. Continue reading “mimicking birds | bloodlines”

the lowest pair | living is dying

The Lowest Pair is Kendl Winter (Olympia, Washington) and Palmer T. Lee (Minnesota) and they’re a double banjo outfit fit to tie you up in dainty pickin’ and honey sweet lyrics laden with sunshine and the scent of wildflowers on the breeze.

Their debut release 36¢ is a thing of esteemed beauty, on it this charming duo swap lead vocals throughout the album’s 11-tracks, combining Kendl’s finely honed banjo skills with Palmer’s Midwestern smooth as good whiskey croon. The album is out now and will make an excellent accompaniment to whatever else you got going on. Promise. Peace. Continue reading “the lowest pair | living is dying”
