io echo // eye father + stalemate
at times i can get overwhelmed by too much beauty. it is like a tsunami crashing against my heart and dragging me under. frenchman benjamin millepied, the amazing choreographer of black swan fame, ioanna gika the woman with the golden throat, and the handsome man of many, many talents leopold ross. the later two are equal halves of the eclectic music duo io echo. each personality is a force standing alone, but i suspect it is collaboration which drives such artists and enables them to grow and stay hungry. nowness premiered a couple of well-shot videos directed by d. millepied for io echo and the results are pretty much amazing. after jump check them out for yourself. io echo is in the process of recording their as yet untitled debut album. no further details, but all things in their own time, right? i’ll keep you posted. peace. the eversons // with a little help from my friends
in the rough and tumble world of today nothing says appreciation like a tribute album (hey, who doesn’t want to feel pretty and special?) so, a whole passel of folks with good intentions got together to honor the new zealand band the eversons (it was a tough job, but dammit someone had to do it). on this release you’ll hear various artists, i.e., princess chelsea, the boa constrictors, street chant and a few others do their best to do justice to the most excellent songwriting of the eversons. oh yeah, i’m talking about the ‘with a little help from my friends’ ep and it’s a free download. my favorite of the lot is the somber ode, “why can’t you just be happy for me?”. check it out the everson’s on lil’chief records. also, since we’re on the subject, the eversons debut album ‘summer feeling‘ is out now for your rapacious musical consumption. i had a listen and i must say its pretty damn good stuff. peace. tame impala // lonerism (our sunday best)
there is so much buzz circling the perth, australia band tame impala right currently you just might assume they are the hardest working worker bees in the colony. band helmsman kevin parker and company dropped the band lonerism lp a few days ago (october 9th) and so far anyone who’s listened to it are all in and giving it two thumbs up. but, with songs like, “elephant” and the phenomenally psychedelic and beautiful rock gem, “apocalypse dream,” it doesn’t surprise me at all. this release will def go down as one of the best albums of 2012, and you can cop a copy right here on itunes. peace. freelance whales // diluvia
freelance whales is a fun band to listen to. period. just take into account their previous effort, weathervanes (2009). on that album they collectively managed to craft euphoric and giddy music replete with thought-provoking songs that took it easy on our collective ears and hearts. and while melancholy does exist too in the freelance whales universe, it is isn’t something of which the band dwells on. now, almost 3-years later the band’s 2012 sophomore offering diluvia materializes, and we get to experience the fun all over again. but it is a bit more than “more of the same.” present still is the above excellent song-writing and those sonic compositions which vacillate between the rife and rich swaths of wide open space grandeur to those dazzling earthbound odes with sparse beautiful simplicity. this is am album with the power to, maybe not fix things, but it does offer an atmosphere in which all seems a bit less pressing and a lot more hopeful and possible.
i got my hands (read ears) on an advance copy of the album diluvia and from the first song, “aeolus” it begins with soft synths and choir-like chanting. this is tranquil easement into an album which blossoms into a deluge of pale and spiraling colors. the second, third and fourth songs, “land features,” “follow through” and “spitting image” is familiar ground. in that they closely resemble the “freelance whales sound” we fell in love with in the first place (the synths, glockenspiel, banjo and harmonium are all still there). yet, it is a bit of a misnomer to even attempt to nail down the freelance whales sound, because it is a wide and uncharted land where the mandolin cozies up with the water phone, and synthesizers make strange bedfellows with a bamboo pipe organ.
the song, “red star” judah dadone shuts us into the dreamscape of hist wistful heart and a torn scrim of red falls down around us…, “i don’t wanna jump from this scarlet star tonight
and bend things so much I can’t remember how they were, let her nova alone breathing outwards to burn,” this is a bitter lump of coal in my throat and a sweet doleful segue into our fragile humanity as one can get.
to some it up diluvia is a fine album right down to the last song, “emergency exit“. this lp it is filled with enough good music to keep you warm and listening the whole winter through. i also want to mention how freelance whales make good and magical use of the lithe and feathery vocals of doris cellar‘s angelic voice, adding just the right amount of buoyancy to various tracks throughout. peace. empress of // … possibly the most intriguing music you have not heard
some of the best kept secrets have their own way of spilling out all over the place. a perfect example of this is the barely internet searchable artist empress of (lorely rodriguez) is holing up in brooklyn, nyc and stirring her pot of mystically sensual music coined “color minutes” her words not mine. check out her color-coded numbered snippets (my fav is #6) on youtube. your musical appetite will be thoroughly whetted. peace.
alunageorge // watching over you
for me i can’t plot the course of my affections. i know what i like, but even still sometimes pleasant surprises introduce themselves and the acquaintance is welcome. the british duo alunageorge is composed of a combination of subtle opposites working to win heads and hearts over everywhere. theirs is a sufficient, but not overdone mix, of the eclecticism of sub-pop in league with the rock steady pulse and drive of r&b. but, realistically aluna francis could possibly sing over a track with only an infant crying and i just might be equally enthused. it all pretty much began with their ‘you know you like it’ ep. shortly thereafter island records took serious note of the quaintness and potential of aunageorge and the rest is history. after the jump check out a few bits and ends and. also, head over to soundcloud for more. peace.
