the soft moon // insides

san francisco-based indie artist the soft moon (luis vasquez) is riding a tear in the 80’s post-punk space-time continuum (think joy d,  biz-hous to the iz-hous and love & the rocketeers (if you need a translation shoot me an e-mail) to great effect. listen to the tracks “insides” and “die life,” you can practically feel the layers of reality peeling away one layer of sonic perception at a time. both tracks will appear on the october 30th (us) and november 5th (ue) sophomore album release ‘zeros‘. this is a whole lot of electric voodoo for your ear space. peace. that’s no moon | according to ancient alien theorists

what, or rather who, it is is That’s No Moon. no, it’s not the four horsemen of the apocalypse, not even close. unless it all ends with a frenzy of utterly euphoric rock infused and electro tempered-pop noise, and in that case the champaign, illinois quartet that’s no moon fit the bill. via the label blue box records comes the band’s debut full-length and self-titled release that’s no moon  (← stream the entire album, just click the link). the album drops september 24th. however, you can also catch these pleasant, albeit vociferous noise makers at this years pygmalion music festival playing on the sleigh bells bill. peace. woods // bend beyond lp (our sunday best)

“for their seventh album, bend beyond, woods got dark. it’s not that they weren’t dark before-when you really get in there and listen, jeremy earl is singing about some heavy stuff, but it’s hidden under his gorgeous falsetto and sometimes obtuse lyrics. on bend beyond, though, earl and company fully embrace that darkness. album opener “bend beyond,” has long been a jammy live staple, but here it’s compact and tight with a stuttered guitar line and a world-ending collision of instruments.

meanwhile “is it honest” jangles along happily until you notice earl is in a more destructive zone than the bright music initially suggests, singing it’s so fucking hard to see as both a form of comfort and an act of despair.

instrumentally, bend beyond is certainly the most full woods record yet, guitars weave and bubble across peppy drumming, but lyrically earl is at his most direct and spare. while previous albums sounded like they went directly from earl’s brain to tape with minimal outside interference, bend beyond is lush and full-bodied, the work of a band in perfect, heavy harmony. listening to the record as a whole, it feels like the most daring leap woods has made yet: it captures the band’s live intensity, but keeps the intimate sadness that made them so great in the first place.”

nadine carina // little bits ep (our sunday best)

does the name nadine carina ring a bell? well, you probably heard her lovely voice recently, she provided vocals for the cloud seeding project (kevin serra) on the track, “the light”. since introductions have been made, let me tell you about nadine carina’s solo experimental release ‘little bits’ ep. the newly crafted ep is a collection of experimental yet beautifully quirky odes and soundscapes perfect for late night musings or traveling through the astral plane. by the way the whole enchilada is available for free download via her bandcamp page. just so you know, my favorites our the, “paradise”, “a different face everyday” and the starlight sweetened song, “storm/calm featuring gated”. take your time with this one, it grows on you and will make a great attention to your music collection. ms. carina my hat off to you for creating such wonderful music. peace. language // ep

lansing, michigan-based band language unleashes a sound which comes pouring out of your speakers like a sunburst of post-punk euphoria. this is music glazed with a vibrancy combined with both ear-aching post-punk pop but tempered by a gritty passion and an unstoppable need to get it out of their collective systems. lead-vocalist christopher minarik channels a hybrid blend of ian curtis (joy division) and peter murphy (bauhaus) with sonic fragments of the pixies thrown in for good measure. and even though the band has its influences it still portrays a visage which is clearly and unequivocally their own. my favorite track is the ep opener, “sault marie,” how it unfurls with a frenetic maelstrom of drums and quicksilver guitar work before chris’s vocals festoon the song with his husky diamond in the rough crooning. great music from a band i will definitely be following. peace.
