For Our Sunday Best feature I’ve tapped Portland, Oregon’s folk-pop band Horse Feathers for good reason, they’re the epitome of a languid Sunday spent soaking up musical sunshine. Frontman singer/songwriter Justin Ringle has perfected the band’s wistful lazy river sound. Collectively, the band has elevated the folk rock/pop tradition to new levels of genuis. The band’s 4th, Cynic’s New Year (drops April 17th, via label Kill Rock Stars). Last month the band debuted the albums 1st single “Fit Against the Country,” and now with their 2nd single release, “Where I’ll Be.” And it’s a dreamy and wholesome puff of some good organic stuff. And if you’re willing and able you can pre-order the new album on iTunes and at Amazon. Hope you like. Peace. Continue reading “Horse Feathers // Cynic’s New Year (Our Sunday Best)”

French Horn Rebellion / / This Moment
Blood may be thicker than water, but the music that moves trumps all. French Horn Rebellion are Robert and David Perlick-Molinari, two brothers born originally hailing from the environs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Theirs is a story of rebellion cloaked heavily within the mantra “follow your dreams.” According to legend, way back in 2007, younger brother Robert, made a decision that would changed the course of both brother’s lives. He ditched the safe, or perhaps arduous path, pursuing a career playing classical French Horn or taking a chance and reaching for the brass ring. He chose the latter, and enlisted his brother into this wild eye scheme. Well, needless to say their gamble payed off., and so French Horn Rebellion was born. Check out the duo’s track “This Moment” and tell me it doesn’t move into your veins like something illicit and fill your ears with joy. Enjoy. Peace. Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny // Atlas (Official Video)
Beth Jeans Houghton is a bright star cresting the musical horizon. In a world overrun with cookie cutter acts, hers is reason enough to smile and turn up the volume. However, Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny break out, or rather shatter any would be mold, thus delivering music that is any thing but run-of-the-mill or boring. Like a freshened breeze of opium mist Ms. H and her Hooves of D send listeners swooning. And so it is with her latest video for the song, “Atlas.” Most say the Juan Iglesias directed video is about change, it looks to be something wholly, er, different to me. The video co-stars Brenda King, and depicts, or rather suggests illicit shenanigans aplenty. Watch it and tell me what you think. Also, be on the look out for the forthcoming debut album Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose (April 23rd) from which the song “Atlas” is taken. Peace. Ahwlee | The Art of Rəuse | Valleys

Ahwlee | The Art of Rəuse | Valleys
Some makers of beats dwell in subterranean chambers and are funded by nefarious think tanks whose mission is unraveling groove theory. And then there is the likes of Ahwlee. His approach is simple approach and a tranquil existence as he toils away in Long Beach, California. And like a master beats craftsman joining sound to sound, intertwining the warm beautiful with the seamlessly hypnotic. Basically, chopping it up quite spectacularly. Ahwlee + The Art of Rəuse + Valleys = Blissed-out soul sounds. This is a heavy dose of soulful vocal chops with mellow pulses resulting in a modernized mashup of easy listening. Peace. The Mars Volta /// The Maklin Jewel
The Mars Volta are one of my favorite guitar bands hands down. It’s a simple choice really, because Cedric Bixer-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López are never boring, and the guitar work and lyrics are consistently from another planet, possibly even another dimension. How many of you are TMV fans? Wow! That’s a whole lot of hands in the air. So, like me you love the bands head-trip progressive experimentation, as the songs weave in and out of consciousness, as the music performs a sonic lobotomy on your frontal cortex and soul kisses your spine! Check out the full album stream at www.antiquiet.com. Peace. Better yet raucous mayhem! Continue reading “The Mars Volta /// The Maklin Jewel”
Joe Goddard // Gabriel EP
Joe Goddard, bka Ulysses and fellow Hot Chip accomplice is a force to be reckoned with on so many levels. Let’s see, he’s a more than capable vocalist, a maestro of the synths and syncopated beats. No doubt, his is a world in which making timeless music is not just a means to an end, it is perhaps life-sustaining. I’m revisiting his August 2011 Gabriel EP for good reason, it transcends this-worldly plain and delivers you right into the arms of seventh heaven. The title-track, “Gabriel” (Ft. Valentina) and “All I Know” are 14 minutes 57 seconds of unadulterated bliss. This is music that nourishes the soul. And you know I just had to provide the optics for you enjoyment too. See and hear it all after the jump. Peace. Continue reading “Joe Goddard // Gabriel EP”
maglia rosa group // penelope
It is raining here in Michigan, and the precipitation is as persistent as it is chilly. The sky? Well, it is as expected. Overcast and gray. But there is hope yet. Currently, I’m listening to the Maglia Rosa Group and so there is at least sunshine upon the airwaves ringing my ears. The Maglia Rosa Group hail from Norwich, U.K. But really their physical location is a moot point, because it’s their music that is of importance. Listening to the song, “Penelope” I get the feel of something not easily defined. For one, the music Daisy, Matt, Owen and Sam make is too sophisticated to be categorized as mere Pop. Yet, the tag adult contemporary is a mismatch too. So, what to do? Well, I’ll just enjoy the music sans labels. I’m especially unarmed by Daisy’s smoked honey voice. It’s a voice I hope to hear more of, and I think you’ll want the same. You can head over to the band’s Facebook fan page for additional tracks. Peace.
