The Etienne Perrin directed video “Taj Mahal” for rock/electro band La//KVLKD is not so surreptitiously a visual reference to Leonardo Da Vinci’s most famous painting. Yet, it’s not the only obvious occurrence here either. Take the music for example. La//KVLKD have taken two different sounds (rock & electro) and smashed them together gorgeously. And if you thought the song “Taj Mahal” was good, then check out the band’s song “Banderoles” it’ll hit you in all the right places and “Symptoms” is just sonically delicious. Peace. Severin / / Everything Breaks EP / / Macabea *Video
Perhaps when the sun sets is when Danny Sanchez and Elizabeth Anne Martin shine brightest. It’s an odd, yet totally mesmerizing music this duo makes. It’s skittish and naughty, not as playful as most electro music you may be familiar with, but just as enjoyable. Especially, after you’ve imbibed your chosen elixir and are laying next to your chosen “friend” for an intimate evening of … well, you fill in the blank. The music of Severin is more akin to the murkier dungeons within one’s mind, not accustomed to much light and totally comfortable luxuriating or basking in the dimness on your darker secrets. It is totally appropriate, and highly suggested that you wait until nightfall to begin your journey into their Everything Breaks EP, and although it doesn’t officially drop until March 19th you can have a listen after the jump. And for an in-depth interview about the origins of Severin check out their interview at www.londontheinsidemusic.com. Peace. Continue reading “Severin / / Everything Breaks EP / / Macabea *Video”
Heliotropes // 7″
Nya Abudu, Cici Harrison, Amber Myers and Jessica Numsuwankijkul aren’t much like what one is used to hearing from a rock/alt band. This band of gypsies elevate, but at the same destroy expectations. Theirs is a funky, grungy and psyched-out rocket ride, in short a totally convincing rock deluge; a mix and match affair with shards of light pouring in from a wide range of influences. You may hear swathes of sound reminding you of early Jane’s Addiction, particularly 1988’s Nothing’s Shocking. Also, there are flashes of Seattle-sound, think Sound Garden. There is even some fine needle work reminiscent of Black Francis and his Pixies. But make no mistake these ladies are not copy cats by any means. They are bringing their own brand and stylistic approach to what they envision rock to be, and the results tug at your ears like a heavy-handed anvil of rock-n-rolla. Check out the band’s 7″, which includes the gorgeously badass songs “Ribbons” and “Love’s True Knot” believe me you’ll thank me. However, before running Heliotropes through your speakers you may want to update your insurance policy and get that “ear splitting” coverage you’ll surely be needing. Peace.

The band has a new EP titled Night Heat dropping this month. So listen to the song “Paraiso” and let that be the only reason you click play all over again. Peace. py & damu // blind
Londoner Jade Elizabeth Pybus does one thing extremely well, and that’s opening her mouth and letting pure sun-sound wash over your eardrums. As Py she is known to lay the vocals on thick and relentlessly plush, and currently she has teamed up with music guru Damu and together they’ve conjured up 100% magic. Check out the track “Blind” and you’ll be all in, and maybe a bit undone by the sheer beauty of it. You can get the download on SoundCloud and play it to your hearts desire. Be on the lookout for Py’s mixtape Tripping On Wisdom on May 21st. Peace. Continue reading “py & damu // blind”
Scratch Massive // Closer Ft. Chloé
The song “Closer” Ft. Chloé” is a dangerously dark funk swamp in which one could sink within for hours on end. It dirties your fingertips it does, and muddles your neck with sucking kisses vampire like. It paws and scratches your delicate skin. It leaves bruises on body party and they aren’t ashamed to display these little remembrances like trophies. This is what a Scratch Massive song can do, and just when you think you’ve had enough you click repeat and Maud Geffray and Sébastien Chenuthave seduce you all over again. Peace. The Hood Internet // Touch One (Khaled + Drake + Rick Ross + Lil’ Wayne + Holy Other + Supreme Cuts)
If you’re down, then you’re down. Aaron Brink (aka ABX) and Steve Reidell (aka STV SLV) known as The Hood Internet are down. And what exactly does being down entail. Well, for starters it means not having limitations regarding what a song or track can be. Then also, being down translates into being fearless, in that you follow your heart, and the groove wherever it takes you. On both counts the Chicago-based duo more than fit the bill. And if you’re not familiar check ’em out, but it’s going to take some doing because The Hood Internet’s back catalog is massive, like juggernaut style massive. For instance, if one could take all the mind alternating grooves they’ve collectively produced over the years and put then end to end they would ring Nirvana infinitely. Check out what these two gifted sound surgeons have done with the track “Touch One,” they’ve taken some of hip-hops finest and set them adrift upon a compendium of sensuous sound waves. They’ve enwrapped them one and all is a soft gossamer shroud, and more importantly, nary a street cred was harmed in the making of this remix. You want more? Well, you can cop this track and plenty more at www.thehoodinternet.com Peace. Continue reading “The Hood Internet // Touch One (Khaled + Drake + Rick Ross + Lil’ Wayne + Holy Other + Supreme Cuts)”
Beast Make Bomb // Zombie Song + Coney Island (Video)
There is a whole heap of hustle in the post/punk/pop groove wave that is Brooklyn-based band Beast Make Bomb, and it’s all good. Good like “good weed” or “good porn,” are ya feelin me now? Firstly, I am so tangled up in lead song-spitter Ceci G‘s (G = Gomez) vocals (and tangled up in her voice is where I’d like to stay), think crystalline shards of lightning stitched through with mellifluous rant. And then there is the frenetic free-range guitar courtesy of Ms. Glenn VanDyke (Ms. Gomez throws in some mean guitar rabbit-punches too). Mr. Hartley Lewis wails majestically on the skins (and looks like a wildish warrior warlock while doing it), meanwhile Sam Goldfine channels beauteous testosterone laden low-register sonics on the bass. The bands kaleidoscopic patchwork of sound does the body good. In that, once the music of BMB is cranked way up to 11, you better toss all your earthly worries to the wind and just rock the fuck out! Check out my favorite, “Zombie Song,” it’s the last track on the BMB‘s mini-LP Skinny Legs. And for good measure, and because the music is so devilishly good, I’ve also throw in the band’s latest Sourpuss EP. Love it and it’ll love you right back, promise. Peace. Vacationer // Trip
The band Vacationer is dedicated to perpetuating the fact that most people, me included, don’t unplug and unwind enough. Tru dat! And they’ve gone a created music to induce within our lives (or minds) space to unfurl our inhibitions to live a little via a truncated or extended session of chillaxation (real word). And their song, “Trip” does just that. Right now, while listening to this I’m no longer in Michigan. No, I’m floating on the blue-green waters of Turks and Caicos. So, if you need me for anything I’m out of commission, at least until the song has played about 1,000 times. Enjoy. Peace. Continue reading “Vacationer // Trip”
chet faker // terms and conditions (video)
I’m adding Melbourne, Australia artist Chet Faker (Nick Murphy) to my list of new favs, and with good reason. What originally, and ultimately, won me over was his sumptuous re-edit of Radiohead’s song “Nude” with its drawn out slow-motion honey drip treatment which clings to your soul like sticky whale song. But that was only the beginning of my new-found addiction. Now, with his latest “Terms And Conditions” I have arrived at the epicenter of full-on famdom and it’s a great place to be. Check out the mini-lineup of songs after the jump, and of course there is a visual to massage your corneas into bliss. Peace. Continue reading “chet faker // terms and conditions (video)”
