DJ/Producer Goldroom has the ability to build upon an original track in ways few others can. Here he broadens the Charli XCX track “You” (Ha Ha Ha) into something hypnotic and introspective. Thus enriching each note and lyric with the light of understanding. In the end though the greatest remedy is to get up and dance. Trust in the music and let it wash your worries all away. It is nigh impossible not to fall for The Milk Carton Kids. In terms of harmony, delivery, and overall songcraft the Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale duo are unsurpassed. I am inspired by artists who possess the ability to elevate a genre or in the case of TMCK, bust it to pieces. And although it is natural to try to place TMCK into a box and label it Folk, Bluegrass or Southern Rock Pop, etc. But The Milk Carton Kids won’t stay contained, not even close. Listen to their new track “Snake Eyes,” which premiered on Rolling Stone (1/08/13) and it is more than evident these guys far exceed the usefulness of their current band name. Or perhaps it is part of their wonderful duplicity, to put forth an almost juvenile designate, which at first glance conjures immaturity, but in the end offer listeners a thing wholly divergent reality. When you click play, what you get is a slow motion gut-check, a stave through your heart but without all the blood, yet still passion aplenty. These aren’t mere songs, they’re reservoirs of a revelatory depth of character, emotion and beauty. The track is taken from the band’s upcoming debut LP,  ‘The Ash and Clay’, and it also serves double-duty as the soundtrack to Gus Van Sant’s latest film, Promised Land. The Milk Carton Kids are a namesake defied kind of deal, and an admonishment to not judge a band by its Saturday morning kids show name. Peace.

i have been an ardent fan of guitar prodigy/multi-instrumentalist/singer and songwriter blake mills since i discovered his beautiful music nearly a year ago. so, it is with great pleasure that i present to you the song, “curable disease” via a ‘yours truly session’, which puts on display why so many are so intrigued by this rising musician. if you haven’t check out his debut release ‘break mirrors‘ (2010). currently blake is out on tour with fionna apple. and for those lucky souls residing in the san francisco area you can catch blake mills playing with his former bandmates (dawes) at the independent december 30th and 31st. peace.

they say, “the west coast is the best coast,” and while the jury may still be out on that one, it safe to say there are some great bands emerging from the sunshine state. and if you had your good ear to the ground this past summer you may have heard the buzz surrounding the five-piece venice beach-based band terraplane. they have a gritty bluesy-rock sound which penetrates your skull like a hollow-tip barreling out of a shot-gun fashioned by the likes of canned heat with traces of the allman brothers . musical references aside the quintet’s dave trumfio-produced (of wilco & my morning jacket fame) friends ep will drop this coming tuesday on october 16th. for now, sit back and listen to terraplanes’s 2nd single from the friends ep, “ya never know.” peace.
