the milk carton kids // prologue & retrospect

Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattenngale are the one-two-punch known as The Milk Cartoon Kids. When listening to their brand of folk-pop you’ll notice a certain delicacy and attention to detail mostly reserved for lace makers. These guys are in the vein of say Simon and Garfunkel or the Jayhawks, both tough acts to follow. But make no mistake TMCK don’t do mimicry, instead they pay homage to a strong song tradition with ample acumen, grace and a whole heap of talent. Treat yourself to their Tiny Desk Concert today on NPR and get their albums Prologue and Retrospect as free downloads. Peace. Continue reading “the milk carton kids // prologue & retrospect”

the neighborhood // i’m sorry… ep

West Coast (Los Angeles) band The Neighborhood makes music just right for relaxing and vibing out any day of the week. Take the songs, “Female Robbery” and “Sweater Weather”. Both are easy tracks to chillax to. No word on an official debut LP release yet. However, you can check out (and download) the band’s debut I’m Sorry … EP at www.thenbhd.com  or you can just cop it on iTunes. I’m keeping my phalanges crossed for a full-length album sometime soon. I suspect too you’ll be hearing a lot more of this darling band if you haven’t already. Peace. Continue reading “the neighborhood // i’m sorry… ep”

Delta Spirit / / Self-Titled Album Delta Spirit

San Diego/Long Beach band Delta Spirit is Jon Jameson, Brandon Young, Matthew Vasquez, Kelly Winrich, and Will McLaren, but they are much more than a bunch of guys banging drums and wrenching the blood, sweat and tears from guitars and other instrumentation. They are more than songs shot through with intensity and a hefty dose of gilded sweetness. These guys are the kind of band you listen to when you want to go home, grab a beer and shed all the bullshit of the day and just chill out. You listen but you don’t really listen, you absorb the quaint melodies and let the music settle around your ears like wood smoke,  and the vocals of Matthew Vasquez can work tenseness out of you like a master masseuse on top of their game. Listen to the entire  self-titled album Delta Spirit at www.deltaspirit.net. Honorable mentions, the very first song “Empty House”, “California”, “Into The Darkness” and my favorite “Otherside” with its sexy Bossa Nova structure. Make no mistake, these aren’t the only gems, there are 11 of them. Let me know which ones you fall to pieces listening to. By the by, you can get the FREE DOWNLOAD of the track “California” on the bands’ Facebook Fan Page. Peace. Continue reading “Delta Spirit / / Self-Titled Album Delta Spirit”

Tree & Shelf Nunny – This Is Separation

Is there anything worse than romantic separation? Well, maybe financial ruin, but that’s another blog, not this one. Humans, we take it personal when a good thing comes to a close. Heck, at times we even hate when a bad thing comes to an end. We’re weird like that. What can you do? With the song “This Is Separation,” the San Fran cool folks known as Tree & Shelf Nunny have captured the lovelorn emotion in verse to a T; and its pathetically beautiful. The song puts on a pretty convincing display: it pouts, it is full of lament and sadness, and it rides a forlorn bouncy beat indicating the up and down emotion of the newly lonely. I need a beer now, maybe several. Peace. Continue reading “Tree & Shelf Nunny – This Is Separation”
