private island | a good look ep

Los Angeles is known for just about every form of musical entertainment, so it’s no surprise to see Private Island rise to the top of the best bands The City of Angels has to offer. The band’s A Good Look EP is a handy collection of four songs, and they’re a good indication that this band will have a future taking up residence in my earhole. After the jump, check out the audios for the tracks Bear Hands, Don’t Call Me, and Dissolve. Here’s to a full-length from this outfit. Peace. Continue reading “private island | a good look ep”

phox | slow motion | official video

Baraboo, Wisconsin based band PHOX are by far my fav newish carnival band. And now I’ve yet another reason to lose my top hat over Monica Martin & Co. Check out the (band member) Zach Johnson-directed video for the track “Slow Motion“after the jump.  Also, you just may want to grab Phox’s new, sort of, debut self-titled album. The songs are remastered and have a more finished quality than previous recordings (thanks Jeff Lipton).  Keep your eyeballs peeled, the album drops June 24th courtesy of Partisan Records. You can, and surely may Pre-order at: Amazon or iTunes and at www. phoxband.com. Peace. Continue reading “phox | slow motion | official video”

nathan k | most birthdays | our sunday best

At times songs take on a greater significance if the music is produced by someone whom you count as a friend and you really admire their undeniable artistry. Nathan K. and I first met after I Tweeted a penned response to his amazing Dishes LP (2012). Since then, we have kept in touch and the rest is history.

Now, Mr. K has gone a done it again. With the his latest song Most Birthdays which plies the deepening waters of this so-called life. And although the waves seem to engulf his personal life Nathan remains resilient and beats back despair with gorgeous and powerful song. Look for a forthcoming album in 2014. Peace. protomartyr | come & see

Protomartyr is more than a Detroit-based band. This is a band which embodies all the good and bad of a troubled city on the cusp of deliverance or economic irrelevancy. Their songs are raw and a bit schizophrenic to the opposite of anything resembling a fault. Yet, there exists beauty of an austere sort of nature. This is post-punk angst revitalized and resurrected from obscurity. Frontman Joe Casey’s dry ice vocals set the tone for the achingly raucous songs which occupy their forthcoming album Under Color of Official Right via Hardly Art Records. These are fast paced odes of pain wrapped with dirty bandages, and the fact that they don’t heal right only lends authenticity of character to an album that is an apt catharsis for despair. This album is an up-all-nighter for damn sure. Look for Under Color of Official Right to drop April 8th. Peace. Continue reading “protomartyr | come & see”

sensual harassment // escape from alpha draconis ep + video

Sensual Harassment is the musical twosome (vocalist Craig Finn and guitarist Tad Kubler) from the Williamsburg locale of Brooklyn, NYC. Here’s a band with a strong sentiment for 80’s rock and the then burgeoning neo-Disco movement of the same decade (New Order, Erasure and Echo & The Bunnymen come to mind). Their songs spring to life all fizzy and full of pop, and do the caress your ear thingy like a would be paramour of substantial…um dexterity? If you haven’t, check out the very enjoyable and finger lickin’ good Escape From Alpha Draconis EP out now. After the jump check out the new six-song EP and the Capri Suntan video. Peace. gardens & villa | dunes | official video

The five members of the band, Adam Rasmussen, Chris Lynch, Dusty Ineman, Levi Hayden and Shane McKillop, left their hometown and base of sunny Santa Barbara to record with Tim Goldsworthy (Cut Copy, DFA Records, Hercules & Love Affair) at Key Club, a converted locksmith’s building in Benton Harbor, MI. Ripped out of their usual environment into a cold midwestern locale, the band finds a new voice on Dunes. The band brings their catchy rhythms and bold synth lines from previous records but continues developing a richer sound now experimenting with unique gear including Sly Stone‘s custom-built Flickinger recording console and direction from Goldsworthy. Their album Dunes is out now courtesy of Secretly Canadian. Peace. Continue reading “gardens & villa | dunes | official video”

the sherpas | six steps |official video

The Sherpas release a video for their latest rock rhythmic track Six Steps. From the very beginning the guitar licks start a frenetic free fall and soon the song is in a full blown groove vibe. The track is taken from the bands recent Six Steps single, the b-side contains an alternate version of the song Telescope. You should also check out the bands previous release Soirée EP. Peace. be forest // earthbeat lp: our sunday best

Be Forest was born as a trio: guitarist, Nicola, was joined by Erica Terenzi on drums and vocals and Costanza Delle Rose on bass and vocals. For their forthcoming sophomore album, Earthbeat, the band gained the services of Lorenzo Badioli, who takes care of the new electronic parts of Be Forest’s sound. If with their debut Cold LP, their sound was characterized as “dark”, with Earthbeat the sun seems to have risen, brightening the Riviera. Be Forest’s melodies have always had a dreamy lightness as their striking feature, but now it is possible to feel a new warmth. Take for example the song Captured Heart, which echos intimate percussions and flutes, or Colours, that manages to combine an hypnotic progression with ethereal form, or again take the idyll of Hideaway, austere and romantic at the same time.

Stay tuned, Be Forest’s soon to be released Earthbeat LP drops February 4th via We Were Never Being Boring. Peace.
