the mercy beat | an act of mercy | sweet | video

The Mercy Beat hits low. They know what we like and they use it against us. Here they offer their track, “Sweet,” in a capsule of cinematic eye-candy. The video is nice but I reckon so is the rest of the aural anatomy that is sure to follow. I hereby dub TMB Seductive and majorly Rockeous. The last word I made up, totally apt. More please! ben khan | 1992 ep

There is something to be said about youthful enthusiasm, and although London-based Ben Khan has youth aplenty he also has the ability to put the music where his mouth is. With his latest, the debonair and totally sexy 1992 EP the music comes out swingin’.

Last year he offered up the twin pleasures of Savage and Eden as mere demos, but now we get to listen to the aforementioned tracks fully fleshed out and alive with the most beat-i-ful heart.

All four-tracks on the 1992 EP possess a high energy, they sway and drip with R&B licks, pulsate with bassiness and crisp synth lines. Check it out below and I betcha’ your body will respond in kind. The 1992 EP drops May 5th courtesy of Blessed Vice Records. Peace. Continue reading “ben khan | 1992 ep”

sensual harassment // escape from alpha draconis ep + video

Sensual Harassment is the musical twosome (vocalist Craig Finn and guitarist Tad Kubler) from the Williamsburg locale of Brooklyn, NYC. Here’s a band with a strong sentiment for 80’s rock and the then burgeoning neo-Disco movement of the same decade (New Order, Erasure and Echo & The Bunnymen come to mind). Their songs spring to life all fizzy and full of pop, and do the caress your ear thingy like a would be paramour of substantial…um dexterity? If you haven’t, check out the very enjoyable and finger lickin’ good Escape From Alpha Draconis EP out now. After the jump check out the new six-song EP and the Capri Suntan video. Peace. be forest // earthbeat lp: our sunday best

Be Forest was born as a trio: guitarist, Nicola, was joined by Erica Terenzi on drums and vocals and Costanza Delle Rose on bass and vocals. For their forthcoming sophomore album, Earthbeat, the band gained the services of Lorenzo Badioli, who takes care of the new electronic parts of Be Forest’s sound. If with their debut Cold LP, their sound was characterized as “dark”, with Earthbeat the sun seems to have risen, brightening the Riviera. Be Forest’s melodies have always had a dreamy lightness as their striking feature, but now it is possible to feel a new warmth. Take for example the song Captured Heart, which echos intimate percussions and flutes, or Colours, that manages to combine an hypnotic progression with ethereal form, or again take the idyll of Hideaway, austere and romantic at the same time.

Stay tuned, Be Forest’s soon to be released Earthbeat LP drops February 4th via We Were Never Being Boring. Peace.

crushed stars // farewell young lovers lp + album stream

Crushed Stars are releasing their new Farewell Young Lovers LP, it drops January the 21st courtesy of Simulacra Records. Anticipating the album release the excellent blog American Songwriter is streaming the LP in-full for a week. Cooler than cool.

The Farewell Young Lovers album moves easy, like a cool mist over wildflowers. This is dream pop interwoven with silvery veins of folksy southern rock-edges, diluted with stylistic fissures reminiscent of Peter Murphy, and the likes of Jesus And The Mary Chain and Sparklehorse. Yet, there exists enough of band leader Todd Gautreau and band mates Jeff Ryan, Howard Draper and Buffi Jacobs talent and beauty to make this Dallas-based band shimmer.

Tracks on Farewell Young Lovers range from the effervescent opener Flowerbomb to the moody instrumental centerpiece Poppies to the Jesus and Mary Chain meets Stax Haters alongside several tracks of the dreamy psychedelia the band is known for. Other surprises include a guest theremin player on Fly and the first crushed stars guitar solo on Supernova with a second one superimposed for good measure.

Drummer Jeff Ryan says, “It seems there’s a new sense of energy woven into these new tracks, there are more textures and electronics expanding the musical landscape. The straightforward harder songs like Flowerbomb and Haters show a musical side that hasn’t been seen before from us, even though there’s still a common thread between these songs and the others on the album.” Peace. james vincent mcmorrow | red dust | video

James Vincent McMorrow breaks away from what was a nice comfy safe bet. But with talent such as his it isn’t much of a gamble at all. On his latest track Red Dust the Irishman threads his chilling voice through stalwart beats fueled by an earful of rhythm and blues. It is gorgeous to hear, almost gospel like. This is the lead single from his forthcoming release Post Tropical due out January 14, 2014 through Vagrant Records. I already pre-ordered mine, so what are you waiting for? Peace.
