still corners // strange pleasures

Pop this candy-wrapped sound sweet into your ear and enjoy. Check out the just released sophomore  12-song follow-up LP Strange Pleasures from London-based dream pop practitioners Still Corners. Tessa Murray and Greg Hughes delivered mightily with their 2010 Creatures of an Hour and not surprisingly stand in the place where obviously lightning strikes twice yet again. And for a limited time you can stream the entire enchilada via Sub Pop Records and Soundcloud. Continue reading “still corners // strange pleasures”

amateur best // pleased

One-man band Amateur Best (Joe Flory) does it all. Mr. Flory writes, produces and plays all the instruments, and he also handles the details of the visual artwork surrounding his musical projects. I like the DIY approach, and in the case of Amateur Best and the song Pleased the results are quite agreeable to my eardrums. The Amateur Best debut LP No Thrills is out now via Double Denim Records. Peace. Continue reading “amateur best // pleased”

james blake + brian eno // digital lion

It isn’t such a long walk to romantic perfection after all…

Mr. James Blake is something of an anomaly in the world of music in that he approaches music with a masculine delicacy unlike any other. Yes, there are all sorts of seducers out here, but Mr. Blake delivers his brand of love potion number 9 without pretension and raises the bar with an authentic genuineness that is both subtle and positively endearing. His most recent offering song “Digital Lion,” doesn’t “try” to be anything other than what it is… abundantly beautiful. On the track “Digital Lion,” James Blake teams up with the iconic Brian Eno and the results are in a word, beyond effective. This song and 11-others comprise the forthcoming album ‘Overgrown‘which drops digitally April 9th, 2013. Peace. Continue reading “james blake + brian eno // digital lion”

denai moore // flaws

This is humanity and humility aplenty conjoined into beautiful soulful song.

It is often said the gift of music is an offering which keeps on giving. And much like the old adage, “You never cross the same river twice,” well, that too can easily be applied to a beautiful and cherished song. I want to first extend a heartfelt thanks to my new friend Teddi for introducing Mitten Mouth Music to Denai Moore. Ms. Moore sings her  wonderful and oh-so-touching song, “Flaws” taken from her ‘Hardliving’ release with an abundance of ardor and tenderness . Make no mistake his is a song you’ll want to put on repeat and shadow dance with well into the late night hours. Plus, it’s a  FREE DOWNLOAD. Peace.

vondalpark // dracula

it is so righteously good to hear new material from band vondalpark. not since their california analog dream and the more dynamic nyc stuff and nyc bags, which was in constant rotation of my playlist not so long ago. the uk trio is gearing to release their debut full-length ‘seabed’ via r&s records. after the jump listen to the first single release, “dracula”. the album drops march 13th next year. peace. anneka // jaws of day

one sure way to pique my musical interest is to lay down some sensuous femme vocals over a wickedly dangerous track. anneka is an accomplished vocalist/multi-instrumentalist and visual artist based in brighton, u.k. who isn’t afraid to try different approaches to further her craft. and, if you’ve followed this blog for some time then her name is a familiar one. and for good reason, she makes another appearance here with her song, “jaws of day” . the track was originally included as part of the electronic explorations compilation released mid-summer. however, it is available now as a single for immediate download too, how cool is that? after listening to this gem i am eagerly awaiting more music from anneka sooner rather than later. peace. alunageorge // watching over you

for me i can’t plot the course of my affections. i know what i like, but even still sometimes pleasant surprises introduce themselves and the acquaintance is welcome. the british duo alunageorge is composed of a combination of subtle opposites working to win heads and hearts over everywhere. theirs is a sufficient, but not overdone mix, of the eclecticism of sub-pop in league with the rock steady pulse and drive of r&b. but, realistically aluna francis could possibly sing over a track with only an infant crying and i just might be equally enthused. it all pretty much began with their ‘you know you like it’ ep. shortly thereafter island records took serious note of the quaintness and potential of aunageorge and the rest is history. after the jump check out a few bits and ends and. also, head over to soundcloud for more. peace. alunageorge // your drums, your love

Right now the mood is chill. It is time to grab something that’ll settle your nerves, wine perhaps? It is the hour if unwinding and the unfurling of any and everything that may get in the way of your total relaxation. If you’re a fan of music, and I’m not speaking of the Top 40 variety (but the music which lives just beneath the underside of complicity) then you might have the alt R&B duo AlunaGeorge on your radar. And if not here’s an introduction. Check out their latest, “Your Drums, Your Love” and you’ll discover its a sweet lil’ number to vibe to. Now, how about that glass of wine, writing music reviews is thirsty work. Peace. Continue reading “alunageorge // your drums, your love”
