Scolla // Take What’s Mine (Ft. Rapper Big Pooh & Big Sant)

“In order to get from what was to what will be, you must go through what is.”Anonymous

What do you when life deals you an unfavorable hand? Do you give up before the hard work you put in bears fruit? Hell naw! You do what my homey Scolla does, you blaze your own damn path. When I look at him and see how far he’s come, and still he’s steady grindin! Still, he keeps his Tom Ford haute couture framed eyes on the prize and pushes quality R&B product to the adoring masses (ladies this means you). With his latest entry, the ATLien, Coop produced “Take What’s Mine” Scolla keeps it real and in doing so, sets the tone for what you can expect from and all future releases. ONLY THE BEST! On this track he brings the heat by showcasing legendary North Cackalacky Emcee, Rapper Big Pooh. And if that wasn’t enough he creates space to shine for Mississippi’s southern gentleman General Big Sant. This track is a holy trinity: substance + rhythm + swag = eminently dope. Peace.

Jesse Boykins III & The Beauty Created // Way Of The Wayfarer (Video)

Some songs are a place and time filled radiantly with love and understanding. Right here, these songs exist exactly as we need them to be.

I am of the belief everything without exception contains a soul. Every living thing. Yes, the nonliving too, mountains and molecules alike. But more to the point. I especially am of the belief that even songs carry within them life-giving energies. These energies manifest in varying degrees of influence. For some, a song can encourage. Yet, for others the same exact song can caution. The songs of Jesse Boykins III are radiant and flush with an intimate feel-good vibe. Without a doubt these songs are living and breathing, and at times even kicking and screaming too.

The music of Mr. Boykins is much like meeting an old friend anew or akin to encountering someone you never met before, but for untold reasons ya’ll just click. These songs are much like the latter. Some say soul music is dead or dying. I disagree. Upon listening to “Way Of The Wayfarer,” you know as well as I do such proclamations are untrue to the point of lunacy. If you haven’t heard of Mr. Boykins it’s alright, better late to this sound party than never attending, right? Let’s just say you’re fashionably late. No matter, just enjoy what this young man is putting out into the universe and just chill. Peace. Continue reading “Jesse Boykins III & The Beauty Created // Way Of The Wayfarer (Video)”

Scolla // The Jones (Ft. Phil Ade & Gerald Walker)

The ladies know what time it is when Detroit’s finest Scolla blesses the mic. The RLES Society’s own is back with another slow burner, “The Jones” featuring fellow up and comers Phil Ade and Gerald Walker. Yeah, this ain’t some sugary bubblegum adolescent shit. Naw, this is a grown ass sexy joint. It doesn’t flirt, it’s straight forward and to the point. This is all the way leading-man material, and it just might win you an Oscar for best-male performance in an action film.  Just click play and witness a full-fledged seduction in progress, like listening to the neighbors through the walls doing the nasty; you may want to, but you can’t tear yourself away. Yeah, you know what it is. Peace. Continue reading “Scolla // The Jones (Ft. Phil Ade & Gerald Walker)”

Scolla – Even & Odds (Ft. Quest // D. Julien

Don’t write off Detroit and more importantly one wouldn’t be wise to take its native son Scolla lightly. There is an old mantra, “Work hard. Play Harder.” But in the case of Scolla and what he has accomplished it would seem as if he has changed the mantra into, “Work Hard. Work Harder!” No question Scolla is on a come up and he’s bringing cats with him. On the J. Parker produced Even & Odds track we have more than able-bodied riders in Floridian emcee, Quest and Brooklyn’s own D. Julien to lace this one up with raw truth and beauty galore. And check the Swag bag for your free Even & Odds download via HulkShare or Mediafire. Scolla is finishing up his currently untitled R&B EP so stay tuned I’ll keep you posted. Peace. The Weeknd – Same Old Song (Paper Diamond Remix)

Let the bass creep curiously into her ears. Around her throat it will kiss reckless beats down in-between her … Yes, this remix is a bit X-rated and as funky as it can get. Paper Diamond is skillful with cutting open a song and inserting nuclear powered artificial hearts like a surgeon at the top of his game. Watch it nah! Don’t get to close to the speakers they’re possessed with the P to the D and his beats will cut cha. Here, Alex B has taken The Weeknd‘s already bangin’ track and poured rocket fuel all over it and the song ignites; like Hendricks taunting flames over his Strat. But we ain’t roasting marshmallows around here (or guitars). No, we’re bringing bodies together like puzzle pieces. Paper diamond + The Weeknd = Vicious!  Like I said, “Watch it nah!” Peace. The RainDoggs – My Medicine (Video)

According to their website The RainDoggs describe themselves as follows, “The RainDoggs are a collaboration of musicians from Austin TX. Their sound is a mix of R&B/Soul & Blues with a David Lynch movie.” I don’t disagree with their description at all. However, they are so much more too. This Austin, Texas collective of superbly talented musicians refuse to be static or limited on where they can take or interpret a song. Rest assured, when they get together there is no telling where they are going to take you. But, it is exactly that kind of suspense, daring and intrigue which makes the music they conjure up so damn irresistible. Their latest is a ballsy take on Snoop Dogg’s “My Medicine,” and it encases your spinal column in voodoo smoke and arrests your ears with utter surprise. It’s also a case of contradictions, of taking something that by all accounts shouldn’t work, but lo and behold it works just fine. As unlikely as an heroin addict becoming a nun or a hardcore gangsta becoming an environmentalist. Yes, strange and wonderful music is made when The RainDoggs come raining down on you. Peace.
