crocodiles // teardrops guitar + premiere on npr + teaser video

Don’t you just adore punk rockers?

San Diego-based post-punk purists or a just effing awesome rock band, the Crocodiles (Brandon Welchez & Charles Rowell) premiere their latest track Teardrops Guitar on NPR’s All Songs Considered. Hey, do they really “consider” all the damn songs? Sounds dubious to me, but whateva’. Anyway, the Crocodiles have also put together a teaser video for the band’s forthcoming release Crimes of Passion via Frenchkiss Records. The album drops August 20th, 2013. Peace. tv girl // if you want it

Back in the day (someone’s day) TV stations signed off for the night. Well, TV Girl’s signal never goes out.

Agreed it’s been a long minute since we’ve had the pleasure of hearing something new from San Diego, CA-based duo TV Girl (they’re mixtape The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle (2012) was a total gas)but that doesn’t mean they (Trung Ngo and Brad Petering) aren’t hard at work. According to sources they have a new EP coming out soon, not to mention the spectacular Coma Cinema they’ve helped record. Check this, whilst we wait, albeit impatiently, for the new songs the duo has put together a Spring Break playlist for Found Footage Mag. After the jump check out one of all time TV Girl tracks from yesteryear. Peace. Continue reading “tv girl // if you want it”

mothlight // american spirit ep

The San Diego electro collective known as Mothlight and helmed by music mastermind Matt Billings released their American Spirit EP a few months ago (May 17th), and frankly speaking you deserve nothing less than to be washed beneath this luscious wave of euphoria over and over again. It’s hard to categorize Mothlight’s sound, because its more an amalgamation of genres, ranging from ambient, chillwave, psychedelica and the seemingly all-encompassing scatter-shot umbrella known as contemporary Pop music. Whatever you deign to label it, it works. Peace. Continue reading “mothlight // american spirit ep”

Twin Cabins / / Cool Kids

“‘There are so many fragile things, after all. People break so easily, and so do dreams and hearts.”  — Neil Gaiman

Twin Cabins is San Diego-based artist Nacho Cano, and he is all about finding expression couched in the unfamiliar, and his is a music absolutely night-time beautiful. And by that I mean, his music can subsist in the light of day, yet in my humble opinion (unsolicited) it is better enjoyed, or perhaps better suited for after sundown pursuits. And even though others have boxed his style of music as Chillwave, it is vastly more than that tag suggests. The tracks “Cool Kids”and “I’m Sure” are representative of an artist who’s viewing the world outside his window with self assured, albeit rose-colored lenses. But, also his music is wistful, all the more mature, and introspective from heartbreak. Yet,he’s willing and able to jump right back into the fray. Nacho Cano is a talented artist whose optimism is not only infectious, but melodically endearing. It’s crisp and crunchy on the outside, but with a soft, all too fragile heart beating just beneath. Be on the look out for his forthcoming debut release I’m Sure coming soon. Peace. Continue reading “Twin Cabins / / Cool Kids”

Delta Spirit / / Self-Titled Album Delta Spirit

San Diego/Long Beach band Delta Spirit is Jon Jameson, Brandon Young, Matthew Vasquez, Kelly Winrich, and Will McLaren, but they are much more than a bunch of guys banging drums and wrenching the blood, sweat and tears from guitars and other instrumentation. They are more than songs shot through with intensity and a hefty dose of gilded sweetness. These guys are the kind of band you listen to when you want to go home, grab a beer and shed all the bullshit of the day and just chill out. You listen but you don’t really listen, you absorb the quaint melodies and let the music settle around your ears like wood smoke,  and the vocals of Matthew Vasquez can work tenseness out of you like a master masseuse on top of their game. Listen to the entire  self-titled album Delta Spirit at www.deltaspirit.net. Honorable mentions, the very first song “Empty House”, “California”, “Into The Darkness” and my favorite “Otherside” with its sexy Bossa Nova structure. Make no mistake, these aren’t the only gems, there are 11 of them. Let me know which ones you fall to pieces listening to. By the by, you can get the FREE DOWNLOAD of the track “California” on the bands’ Facebook Fan Page. Peace. Continue reading “Delta Spirit / / Self-Titled Album Delta Spirit”

Lip Color EP

Lip Color

Although this Lip Color EP has been out since June it hasn’t lost its new car smell. With its drowsy half-lidded electro-Pop sound it is hard not to take notice. I was already in love with the fair city of San Diego, but now that love has just gotten a little bit deeper. I going to ask for San Diego’s hand in marriage and Lip Color will be our love child.
