the head and the heart // let’s be still lp

The Head And The Heart‘s latest album Let’s Be Still is so many good things, and all of them good. Rarely will you find a more infectious band, with as much down home likeability and seemingly boundless talent. It is easy to think of each song as a kind and familiar face with a such lovely disposition. Check out a live performance shot back in August. And naturally, get your mitts on their latest album, Let’s Be Still out now via Sub Pop Records. Peace. Continue reading “the head and the heart // let’s be still lp”

la luz // brainwash = official song of the week

Seattle, Washington punkish rock girlsome La Luz make a mean song. On their latest, the Brainwash 7-incher release via Suicide Squeeze Records. These women come out swingin’, brandishing their respective instruments like weapons of mass seduction! The band has a juicy retro-rock style which goes well with speakers and toe-tappin’ or fisticuffs and an overindulgence of brewskies. You pick.

I like ’em so much I’m making them my official song of week!  Yeah, that effing good! You can pre-order the EP right HERE. Peace. Continue reading “la luz // brainwash = official song of the week”

naomi punk // the spell

“I am the sun/ I am the shooting star…”

sonically speaking our ears crave sound like a man flying into the sun craves sunglasses. and it is no mystery that the melodic and aurally titillating noises of northwest punk thrashers Naomi Punk somehow makes the brain swoon with joy. listening to the recently reissued debut lp ‘The Feeling’ via Captured Tracks is to experience the majesty and thrall of heavy guitar-laden artillery aimed bulls-eye perfect at your rock button (wherever that is). my favorite is track is “The Spell” and with good reason you’ll be listening to it cranked way up. peace. perfume genius / / hood + normal song + dark parts

As always, there exists much fragility in the world and the songs of Perfume Genius not only embody those easily broken parts of the human heart and  soul; they expand upon them in the role of one who has endured much. When I first listened to the musical renderings of 26-year-old Seattle resident Mike Hadrea I was at once struck, not only by the beauty of the songs, but also the very raw and uncontrived nature of Mr. Hadrea’s voice, for it is the voice that conveys the pain and exposed nerve endings of one whose felt much the dark underpinnings of heartache. Listen to the songs, “Hood”, “Normal Song” and “Dark Parts” all of which are taken from the album Put Your Back N 2 It (2012).  I’m certain you’ll love them enough to want them all for yourself as salve against the small meteors that assail one’s existence from time to time.  Peace.  Continue reading “perfume genius / / hood + normal song + dark parts”

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis – Wings

Don’t front. Let’s keep it real. I like this cut for what is attempts to do. To dismantle (even a little bit) our perception and compulsion for the material thing. To sever the ties that strangle and bind us up in unnecessary pursuits for attainable but oft times needless things. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis crushed it, hit the fucking nail on the head with this one propelling “Wings” out and up into the stratosphere. You feel this one right there in the chest, or rather in your cerebral cortex. It gets complex. And really, rap is the perfect medium to present this conversation. Phil Knight you may have tricked us but M&RL are helping us to see things differently. Two thumbs up, way up. Peace.
