shabazz palaces | they come in gold | lese majesty lp

“Sanity, a visage of my wealth
Lost but always found before the idols that I’ve knelt
Strategy, the only way to cry
Keep it do or die and always think in terms of I
Reverie, some legend futures past
Revelry, instead for it renders hella fast
Capitol, a sound that’s on the rise
It’s slaking unrealized until essence has been razed
Sepulcher, a stage enlived by ghosts
Floating off with bags of the blood encrusted dough.”

– “They Come In Gold” (from “The Phasing Shift” suite) Continue reading “shabazz palaces | they come in gold | lese majesty lp”

shabazz palaces // an echo from the hosts that profess infinitum + official music video

Just ahead of Shabazz Palaces‘ soon to launch tour of Asia. Seattle, WA-based avant garde Hip Hop torch bearers release the video for An Echo from the Hosts that Profess Infinitum, better later than never-ish, right? The  video was directed by Joris Grelet, and features molotov cocktails and sword wielding assassins. The video comes nearly two years after the release of 2011’s Black Up from which the track is taken. The duo, Palaceer Lazaro and Tendai Maraire, are hopefully in the lab putting together new material. We can only hope. Also, after the jump check out the recent Shabazz Palaces Remix of Animal Collective‘s New Town Burnout. Peace.  Continue reading “shabazz palaces // an echo from the hosts that profess infinitum + official music video”

THEESatisfaction // QueenS (Our Sunday Best)

Shabazz Palaces protégés THEESatisfaction (Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White bka Cat and Stas) are the antithesis to the music industry cash cow, ala Nicki Minaj (No disrespect, just a fact). So the chances of hearing these cool and positively energetic dames on American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest anytime soon? HA! Forget about it. And, I’m fairly certain they’re alright with not ripping Victoria Secret’s runway or culling a brutish male altar-ego too. Mainly because these young hip hop heads aren’t interested in artifice, nope not even a lil’ bit. And, you can best believe both like nothing better than to shake it up a bit and bust out pop culture and put its fickleness on front street, if you catch my drift. According to various sources, the duo met at college and discovered not a few mutual interests, ranging from classic, circa 70’s R&B to Funk and Jazz influences, an affinity for William the Shakespeare, and not surprisingly the sounds and ethos of 80’s and 90’s hip hop. Together, their sound is heavily steeped in, not only R&B and the like, but thought-provoking observations on a world not seen through rose-colored lenses. Peep the newly minted single “Queens” to understand where they’re coming from. THEESatisfaction are releasing their debut LP awE naturalE via Sub Pop on March 27th. You can also cop the free download of the single QueenS here. Peace. Continue reading “THEESatisfaction // QueenS (Our Sunday Best)”

shabazz palaces // are you… can you… were you? (felt) (official video)

Seattle-based hip-hop off-shoot Shabazz Palaces is a lot of things. For one, they aren’t in any way, shape or form typical of what one might expect from the world of rap, or any other genre for that matter. But, I imagine you’re going to be alright with the sound soon to be emanating from your speakers. Shabazz Palaces is led by Ishmael Butler aka Palaceer Lazaro. Ring a bell? No? That’s cool. However, there was a time when Ishmael Butler was also known by another name, he was ‘Butterfly‘ of Grammy award-winning jazz-rap group Digible Planets.

That was way back in the day, eons ago by industry standards of measuring time and space. And much like his past namesake, the ‘Butterfly’ has undergone another metamorphosis. With his latest project, under the guise of  Palaceer Lazaro he has joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Tendai Maraire and formed the mysterious, celestial anti-body known as Shabazz Palaces.

Previously, the duo self-released the eclectic EPs, Eagles Soar, Oil Flows, as well as The Seven New, each stretching the boundaries of hip-hop into musical Pythagorean theorems. Now, we have the Black Up LP, which is so aptly released via the legendary Sub-Pop Records. After the jump, we have the first official video for the track “Are You… Can You… Were You? (Felt).” I highly recommend an oxygen tank, a space suit and a good pair of 3D glasses for your ears. Peace. Continue reading “shabazz palaces // are you… can you… were you? (felt) (official video)”

shabazz palaces | black up

Let’s go back to 2009, ok? Alright, I understand maybe you don’t want to revisit the entire 365 days of ’09, so let’s just sample a snippet. Digable Planets alum Ishmael Butler aka Palaceer Lazaro materializes out of the stratosphere and joins forces with Tendai ‘Baba’ Maraire to deliver the wonderful star stuff of Shabazz Palaces dropping two truncated EPs, Eagles Soar, Oil Flows and The Seven New.

Out of a magician’s hat something surreal  materializes; unlikely album names coupled with off the beaten path track titles. But these weren’t the only oddities. Take into account the music, which is genre busting too. You may sense an understatement in the mist, which if you listen to the tracks below you’ll immediately understand.

In 2009 Shabazz Palaces not only turned hip-hop on it’s proverbial ear, but the persona, previously known as Butterfly re-wrote its underlying code. Shabazz Palaces offers hip-hop processed through the gigantic particle accelerator at CERN. Songs begin in one place and culminate in another. The lyricism is dope, but in an altered state sort of way, i.e. dreamy and mystical yet introspective and consciousness raising.  In it’s raw organic form the music is easily digestible ; it is akin to avant garde jazz , in that it has structure but it roams terrain previously unexplored by most hip hop heads.

With Shabazz Palaces you  never step into the same river twice, with each listen a new facet is revealed. So, if your looking for Top 40 hip-hop forget about it. But if you are looking for that monster tsunami to ride into the wee hours of the morning then jump aboard.

I posted the old stuff first, the latest Shabazz Palaces album Black Up dropped June 28th of 2011. The track An Echo From The Hosts That Profess Infinitum is 100% butta’. At times it is appropriate to give a primer before you hit ’em with the straight dope. Peace. Continue reading “shabazz palaces | black up”
