frank ocean // wiseman

Frank Ocean is that rare artist inhaling the exhalations of angles’ dreams, then he opens his mouth and the stars weep rivers.

Although I have written extensively regarding the young and super-talented Mr. Frank Ocean, I find myself penning yet another ream of inadequate words in an attempt to describe the magic of yet another gorgeous song titled, ‘Wiseman‘. The official word, is originally the song was supposed to be included in Quentin Tarantino’s deep dirty southern film ‘Django Unchained‘soundtrack. But alas, it didn’t come to pass.  It’s ok though, ’cause we still have this beautiful song released out into the world for us all to enjoy. Peace. Continue reading “frank ocean // wiseman”

dead times // feel

Don’t let the name of this duo fool you, this one has a pulse and legs upon which to sprint full-tilt towards your ears with arms wide open.

although the name of this la-based duo maintain a slightly morbid namesake their music is anything but. to the contrary, the music here is lively has anyone could hope for with its mixing and splicing of pop bubbly and r&b rhythms (can you say genre defying?). Dead Times presents a winner with their latest track, “Feel” and ii is the first release since the duo’s self-titled 7-track album earlier this year. and like the lyric in this proclaim… “yeah my best is yet to come”. peace. frank ocean // nostalgia, ultra | channel orange & beyond

Frank Ocean is without a doubt talented. Super talented. But, he is also a couple of other things. An anomaly and a game changer. In the history of R&B and soul music he is in good company. Think, in no particular order, the likes of Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, James Brown, and Curtis Mayfield, etc. This young singer/songwriter is particularly fond of Otis Redding, Issac Hayes, and Marvin Gaye, and stylistically it shows. But what Mr. Ocean does, and continues to do is closer to what Prince represents in terms of an expansive musicality. Quite honestly though, he’ll be the first one to tell you he doesn’t possess the guitar chops of Van Halen nor does he know any “secret chords like Saint David.” But man can this kid draw lines from a wide variety of influences. Pop, rock, and alternative just to name of few music genres he sources and funnels through his imagination.

Of course, all musicians draw influence from what has come before, but Mr. Ocean casts his net into the whole tapestry of music, or so it seems. Make no mistake his is an ear cocked in unlikely directions. So, if you haven’t listened to Frank Ocean’s nostalgia, ULTRA mixtape (FREE DOWNLOAD) I implore you give it a listen. If you’re a fan, and an avid listener of music, then you probably already know about the Radiohead references and MGMT samples. But then, there is the beautifully hijacked Eagles “Hotel California” and Coldplay “Strawberry Swing” takeovers. On these quasi-renditions Mr. Ocean leaves the music intact but inlays his own reworked lyrics effortlessly, and seamlessly atop.

And still, there is so much more. Because, it’s not only the music, (although he is the veritable musical contortionist) but it is too the unconventional lyrics, the quirky arrangements, and the Auto-Tune and his very capable singing as well. Listen to fan favorite “There Will Be Tears” with its varying tempo and heart-on-a-sleeve subject matter. It is songs like this, but also “Swim Good” and “We All Try” which put this young visionary into a singular category. Because thematically speaking this young gun breathes rarefied air into the aforementioned songs with touching tenderness and vulnerability that is as refreshing as it is endearing.

Yes, Mr. Ocean is different. But different in a good and wholly unique way. His music deviates, in subtle ways from the canon of the neo-soul movement. His latest offering, “Pyramids,” which according to unofficial industry murmurs, will appear on his debut Def Jam release Channel Orange . This song, “Pyramids,”in my opinion is more in the vein of “Novacane” and “Lovecrimes,” but that isn’t a necessarily a bad thing at all. Plus, this track clocks in at just under 10:00 minutes. Making it the longest (and deeply steeped R&B) track to date. And all this leads up to the expectations of Frank Ocean’s debut album release Channel Orange set to drop July 17th via Def Jam. I am excited, expectant and hopeful. Frank Ocean is definitely an artist to watch. Peace.  Continue reading “frank ocean // nostalgia, ultra | channel orange & beyond”

chet faker | i’m into you | video

Chet Faker isn’t an artist shrouded in mystery. A bit of mystique? Yes. This talented singer/songwriter/producer wears his intent, and perhaps his heart too, on his musical sleeve. No secret either how the music he creates is just plain lovely. I also find Chet Faker to be fearless, or maybe it’s just high-octane confidence, either way it’s all good. Here is an artist who can tackle Radiohead’s song Nude and reduce it to its spiritual essence, no mean feat. And CF is equally comfortable (and very capable) of reaching into the R&B archives of 1996 and polishing off Blackstreet’s No Diggity by Blackstreet into a new-found glowing radiance. After the jump, check out Chet Faker’s secret live session performing his very own, I’m Into You at S.O.TERIK‘s Showcase at SXSW presented by FILTER Magazine. Peace. Scolla – Even & Odds (Ft. Quest // D. Julien

Don’t write off Detroit and more importantly one wouldn’t be wise to take its native son Scolla lightly. There is an old mantra, “Work hard. Play Harder.” But in the case of Scolla and what he has accomplished it would seem as if he has changed the mantra into, “Work Hard. Work Harder!” No question Scolla is on a come up and he’s bringing cats with him. On the J. Parker produced Even & Odds track we have more than able-bodied riders in Floridian emcee, Quest and Brooklyn’s own D. Julien to lace this one up with raw truth and beauty galore. The RainDoggs – My Medicine (Video)

According to their website The RainDoggs describe themselves as follows, “The RainDoggs are a collaboration of musicians from Austin TX. Their sound is a mix of R&B/Soul & Blues with a David Lynch movie.” I don’t disagree with their description at all. However, they are so much more too. This Austin, Texas collective of superbly talented musicians refuse to be static or limited on where they can take or interpret a song. Rest assured, when they get together there is no telling where they are going to take you. But, it is exactly that kind of suspense, daring and intrigue which makes the music they conjure up so damn irresistible. Their latest is a ballsy take on Snoop Dogg’s “My Medicine,” and it encases your spinal column in voodoo smoke and arrests your ears with utter surprise. It’s also a case of contradictions, of taking something that by all accounts shouldn’t work, but lo and behold it works just fine. As unlikely as an heroin addict becoming a nun or a hardcore gangsta becoming an environmentalist. Yes, strange and wonderful music is made when The RainDoggs come raining down on you. Peace.
