atoms for peace // default

Atoms For Peace is indeed playing peek-a-boo with our feelings, and we love it.

Since 2009 Thom Yorke (Radiohead) has been baiting us, perhaps not intentionally but nonetheless we’re baited. Atoms For Peace to date has only revealed two songs, “Default” and “Judge Jury And Executioner,” there are rumors of war (in the studio) of a February 2013 full-length album ‘Amok’ of which you can pre-order via iTunes. Until them check out the Dazed Digital Mixtape by none other than our favorite conjurer of radiantly elliptic music Mr. T. Yorke. Peace. Continue reading “atoms for peace // default”

keeping in touch: interview with meredith meyer of young unknowns

The artist becomes the muse.
The artist becomes the muse.

This is the inaugural interview for my new ‘Keeping In Touch’ series where I will be checking in on artists I’ve previously reviewed just to see what they’re up to. Recently I’ve had the pleasure of corresponding with Meredith Meyer of the uniquely talented band Young Unknowns. And from this exchange of words I came away a little intrigued, a bit infatuated and a whole lot of just amazed. This is a young woman on a mission: to bring a bit of beauty and inspiration into the world. And when it comes to music there is little she won’t reveal.

D. Durand: Hello Meredith, how are you?

Meredith Meyer: I’m pretty good these days.

D. Durand: Literally, what are you doing right now?

Meredith Meyer: I just finished my lazy Saturday morning ritual of having a cup of tea and reading. Right now I’m doing some research about exotic dancers throughout history. This morning I read about Margaretha Zelle, aka The Mata Hari. Did you know she studied to be a kindergarten teacher, but when she got a job and the headmaster flirted with her, she was fired? She also refused a blindfold and kept her eyes open when she was executed by the firing squad. I find that fascinating. She looked those bastards right in the eyes. I’d like to know what was going through her mind at that moment. Continue reading “keeping in touch: interview with meredith meyer of young unknowns”

charli xcx // you (ha ha ha) (goldroom remix)

The music is no laughing matter, so let’s just dance.

DJ/Producer Goldroom has the ability to build upon an original track in ways few others can. Here he broadens the Charli XCX track “You” (Ha Ha Ha) into something hypnotic and introspective. Thus enriching each note and lyric with the light of understanding. In the end though the greatest remedy is to get up and dance. Trust in the music and let it wash your worries all away. At least for a little while. Peace. Continue reading “charli xcx // you (ha ha ha) (goldroom remix)”

tourist // tonight

And along came the spider and his web was music.

I was minding my own business when this track abducted me and ferried me off to never never land. And just like magic pills, not the physical kind, but the kind that rain down on you in a cascade of decibels, I was punch drunk and reeling. That’s my story and I’m grooving to it. Tourist is the artist and “Tonight,” is the funky free floating antidote. Peace. Continue reading “tourist // tonight”

ac slater // angels with dirty basses

Deo gratias quod Dies Veneris est. Move sumpin’!

Its Friday the most reverent of days heralding (for most) the end of the work week. And in my mind it would be a travesty of seismic proportions to squandered it on bass-less music. Enter AC Slater and his sunny brand of mixology. After the jump crack open the cold fizzy sound of ‘Angels With Dirty Basses’ and know the book, chapter and verse of what it means to get down and get funky. So, turn it up and let the sound libation begin in earnest! Peace. Continue reading “ac slater // angels with dirty basses”

houses // beginnings

And the song whispered something secret to me… and I was healed.

The music duo Houses (Dexter Tortoriello and Megan Messinais) is many things. The songs are contradictions too: a coalesced vibratory stillness which resonates the secret longings of timidity as it finds its strength to reach for everything. The song “Beginnings,” enters your ear like the echo of falling flower petal. Yet, once nestled within your inner ear it does something else too, it dies and it blooms simultaneously. Dexter’s vocals stretch deep roots as fragile as unrequited longing into sun, moon and stars and beyond. This one stays with you long after silence has filled the space of its distant yearning. Although the album ‘A Quiet Darkness‘ via Downtown Records is set for an April 16th release I am hopeful for more soon, real soon. Peace. Continue reading “houses // beginnings”
