the helio sequence // can’t say no

Ever wonder how some bands escape your notice? Well, the Portland duo The Helio Sequence is one of the beautiful bands that for some unknown reason have completely circumvented my radar, until now. I’ve listening to tracks from their album Keep Your Eyes Ahead (2008) and I keeping repeat in an attempt to make up for lost time. The LP contains nearly a dozen tracks, and for me the stand outs are, “Can’t Say No” and “Shed Your Love” and the remarkably endearing song, “Hallelujah”. Also, according to the band’s Facebook page they’ve recently finished recording their new record, however no solid details concerning it’s release. But, I suspect their as yet untitled body of work to drop later this year. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Peace. Continue reading “the helio sequence // can’t say no”

parlovr // holding on to something

Earlier this month (May 16th), Montreal three-piece Parlovr released their soul-spacious 2nd LP Kook Soul and it is a wonderment to behold. The trio formed in ’05 and they’ve been up to no good ever since. Listen to their track, “Holding On To Something,” to get a feel for their interpretation of clever punkish-pop. You can cop it on iTunes and believe you me the pleasure will be all yours. Oh yeah, you can also stream their latest album Kook Soul via the band’s myspace. So, if you like the band Ok, Go, then this one is a shoo-in for long summers days of sonic enjoyment. Peace. Continue reading “parlovr // holding on to something”

candice gordon // smoking like the barrel of a gun

Recently I received this absolutely sweltering song, “Smoking Like The Barrel Of A Gun” and it put me in good place. A place a swirl with the ghost of Janis Joplin meets Frankie Rose, replete with guitar wizardry and drums suited best for bedroom antics. Yeah, this track is good times galloping and romping amok. To say this song is just hot is the ultimate understatement. This is the kind of song that’ll make your ears prick up and your pulse quicken and boil, and it’s all courtesy of Candice Gordon.

And don’t misunderstand this young woman, she’s not all grit and middle finger waving angst. No, she has many moods from blue flame hot to low smouldering flame. Her soft underbelly of a song, “I Haven’t Eaten In Days” is best experienced with the lights down low and someone lovely in your arms. Then there is her spiritually conflicted ode, “I See A Demon” and although one may think this song is in need of an exorcism I think it’s beautifully tainted and perfectly lovable as is. Check her out! The single release of “Smoking Like The Barrel Of A Gun” drops July 9th courtesy of Fauna Records. Peace. Continue reading “candice gordon // smoking like the barrel of a gun”

poliça // wandering star (official video)

The ring is on my hand,
And the wreath is on my brow;
Satin and jewels grand
Are all at my command,
And I am happy now.

~ Edgar Allan Poe

I thought an excerpt from the prince of melancholy would be utterly and resoundingly appropriate for this the official release of the latest video, “Wandering Star” by Poliça.  This ELY directed visualscape is so damn beautiful and I may and will lose hours getting lost watching it’s saddening and exquisite beauty . Peace. Continue reading “poliça // wandering star (official video)”
