This is the sound of The Aquadolls and it’s a surfer kinda’ punkish doo wop thing they got going on. The music has the ability to turn a dour face upside down, and that’s a good thing. The track Our Love Will Always Remain, may be a bit clichéd but that’s ok too. Give ’em hope, right? The band is prepping their forthcoming debut LP Stoked On You via Burger Records due out this summer. Also, check out a couple additional tracks, namely, So High and other melodic snippets from an odd home-on-the-road-video after the jump. Peace. how to dress well & shlohmo // don’t say no + video
Tom Krell dons a seductive persona as How To Dress Well. At first brush HTDW is unassuming and low-key, but put a mike in front of him and watch the floodgates of his inner soul man open up. His latest “Don’t Say No,” is a a collab with adroit LA producer Shlohmo. Peace. Continue reading “how to dress well & shlohmo // don’t say no + video”
purple ferdinand // define me + acoustic (our sunday best)

“Oh. This wildish land. Where frilled blossoms bloomed. & Rain storms boom. Here blades of shade covet shards of sound. Rainbows set free their A Capella.
Her ungloved hand. A faultless breeze. Adrift in cursive melody. Nothing shrill ‘gainst these verdant hills. Here, all the birds are ruby-throated. Spilling song like lazy rivers.
And … Always the sun courts the moon. & By the music of a purple Ferdinand. They are betrothed.”
I’m not a typical reviewer of music, as evidenced by what you may (and will) find here. At times songs inspire me to put pen to paper and unvaporize my thoughts. The acoustic version of Define Me by Purple Ferdinand is such a song. Plus, Hunger TV showcases a live set by this talented young songstress. Be on the look out for her forthcoming EP soon. Peace. tripwires | shimmer

Reading, UK is known for… Um well, I don’t really know what they’re known for. But, I know this, thank goodness they’ve birthed the band Tripwires. Their new song and video “Shimmer,” is fuzzed out and dour faced Indie rock. The band sounds like it was breastfed on Radiohead, Nirvana and some Silversun Pickups. The guitar on this particular track sounds reminiscent of Nirvana’s Heart Shaped Box, but no matter it still shines nonetheless. And vocalist/frontman Rhys Edwards leans into this song with a spirited melancholy, which contrasts perfectly to the swirling counterpoints of drum, bass and lead gossamer guitar. The song is taken from the bands soon to drop album Spacehopper courtesy of Frenchkiss Records. Look for the LP on June 17th (UK) June 18th (US). Peace. Continue reading “tripwires | shimmer”

la luz // brainwash = official song of the week
Seattle, Washington punkish rock girlsome La Luz make a mean song. On their latest, the Brainwash 7-incher release via Suicide Squeeze Records. These women come out swingin’, brandishing their respective instruments like weapons of mass seduction! The band has a juicy retro-rock style which goes well with speakers and toe-tappin’ or fisticuffs and an overindulgence of brewskies. You pick.
I like ’em so much I’m making them my official song of week! Yeah, that effing good! You can pre-order the EP right HERE. Peace. Continue reading “la luz // brainwash = official song of the week”
typhoon // dreams of cannibalism + video

Today is a good day. Why? Today the Portland, Oregon-based band Typhoon premiered their Matthew Thomas Ross directed video for Dreams Of Cannibalism. The song, with all of it’s wild ranging folk-rockin’ docility comes from their forthcoming album White Lighter, which drops August 20th, 2013 courtesy of Roll Call Records. My favorite song on the new album is “Common Sentiments,” and man can Kyle Morton sing his heinie off!
Of note, if you like what you hear then check out the bands much lauded and sweetly colossus EP, A New Kind Of House. Peace. Continue reading “typhoon // dreams of cannibalism + video”
quadron // avalanche

I’m switching gears here, a virtual pumping of the brakes and slowing things down. And as I move to the slow lane check out the good feel music of Quadron and their infectious downtempo vibe. Avalanche, Quadron’s sophomore LP, is currently streaming in full via The New York Time’s Press Play. Also, be sure to catch them in all of their unbridled sexy glory on The Late Show with David Letterman on June 17th, 2013. Peace. Continue reading “quadron // avalanche”
crocodiles // teardrops guitar + premiere on npr + teaser video

San Diego-based post-punk purists or a just effing awesome rock band, the Crocodiles (Brandon Welchez & Charles Rowell) premiere their latest track Teardrops Guitar on NPR’s All Songs Considered. Hey, do they really “consider” all the damn songs? Sounds dubious to me, but whateva’. Anyway, the Crocodiles have also put together a teaser video for the band’s forthcoming release Crimes of Passion via Frenchkiss Records. The album drops August 20th, 2013. Peace. Continue reading “crocodiles // teardrops guitar + premiere on npr + teaser video”
battlekat // nothing compares 2 u + the band calls it quits

The good news first. Battlekat is one of the most talked about Danish bands as of late. Well, I talk about them anyway. At any rate the exotically shrill and beautiful-voiced Matilde Katinka Böcher and the boys recently did a cover of his Purple One’s Nothing Compares 2 U and it’s never sounded better. The bad news now, well Battleakat is calling it quits: Here is what a band member had to say about it: Continue reading “battlekat // nothing compares 2 u + the band calls it quits”
