freelance whales // diluvia

freelance whales is a fun band to listen to. period.  just take into account their previous effort, weathervanes (2009). on that album they collectively managed to craft euphoric and  giddy music replete with thought-provoking songs that took it easy on our collective ears and hearts. and while melancholy does exist too in the freelance whales universe, it is isn’t something of which the band dwells on. now, almost 3-years later the band’s 2012 sophomore offering diluvia materializes, and we get to experience the fun all over again. but it is a bit more than “more of the same.” present still  is the above excellent song-writing and those sonic compositions which vacillate between the rife and rich swaths of wide open space grandeur to those dazzling earthbound odes with sparse beautiful simplicity. this is am album with the power to, maybe not fix things, but it does offer an atmosphere in which all seems a bit less pressing and a lot more hopeful and possible.

i got my hands (read ears) on an advance copy of the album diluvia and from the first song, “aeolus” it begins with soft synths and choir-like chanting. this is tranquil easement into an album which blossoms into a deluge of pale and spiraling colors. the second, third and fourth songs, “land features,” “follow through” and “spitting image” is familiar ground. in that they closely resemble the “freelance whales sound” we fell  in love with in the first place (the synths, glockenspiel, banjo and harmonium are all still there). yet, it is a bit of a misnomer to even attempt to nail down the freelance whales sound, because it is a wide and uncharted land where the mandolin cozies up with the water phone, and synthesizers make strange bedfellows with a bamboo pipe organ.

the song, “red starjudah dadone shuts us into the dreamscape of hist wistful heart and a torn scrim of red falls down around us…, “i don’t wanna jump from this scarlet star tonight
and bend things so much I can’t remember how they were, let her nova alone breathing outwards to burn,” this is a bitter lump of coal in my throat and a sweet doleful segue into our fragile humanity as one can get.

to some it up diluvia is a fine album right down to the last song, “emergency exit“. this lp it is filled with enough good music to keep you warm and listening the whole winter through. i also want to mention how freelance whales make good and magical use of the lithe and feathery vocals of doris cellar‘s angelic voice, adding just the right amount of buoyancy to various tracks throughout. peace. empress of // … possibly the most intriguing music you have not heard

some of the best kept secrets have their own way of spilling out all over the place. a perfect example of this is the barely internet searchable artist empress of (lorely rodriguez) is holing up in brooklyn, nyc and stirring her pot of mystically sensual music coined “color minutes” her words not mine. check out her color-coded numbered snippets (my fav is #6) on youtube. your musical appetite will be thoroughly whetted. peace.

alunageorge // watching over you

for me i can’t plot the course of my affections. i know what i like, but even still sometimes pleasant surprises introduce themselves and the acquaintance is welcome. the british duo alunageorge is composed of a combination of subtle opposites working to win heads and hearts over everywhere. theirs is a sufficient, but not overdone mix, of the eclecticism of sub-pop in league with the rock steady pulse and drive of r&b. but, realistically aluna francis could possibly sing over a track with only an infant crying and i just might be equally enthused. it all pretty much began with their ‘you know you like it’ ep. shortly thereafter island records took serious note of the quaintness and potential of aunageorge and the rest is history. after the jump check out a few bits and ends and. also, head over to soundcloud for more. peace. grmln // explore ep

in this diy age of young musicians (and not so young), 19-year old yoodoo park is setting himself apart by not only doing what he does for fun, but excelling at it. the part-time californian (he spends his summers in japan) pens dream-pop layered with the tranquil colors of his environs; the muted blue-greens of the crashing pacific and the burnt pinkish-orange sunsets are all evident on his debut explore ep. his is a collection of 7-songs that put the brakes on the rushed urgency of a harried existence. this is great chill-out music, which pairs well with a bottle of wine or shots of daydream with good-vibe chasers. the explore ep opens with,“relax yourself (dolphin cry)” which sets the tone. each the ensuing song never strays from the slow-melting dream floes that continue until the final song, “patio” brushes softly against the skyline; gentle as a whisper. clocking in at 15: 35 minutes this is beautiful quickie for your ears to cuddle with. peace. trixie whitley // breathe you in my dreams

last year (2011) ms. trixie whitley blew me away with her song, “thousand thieves” and now she is doing it all over again with another beautiful heart-stopping track. just a single listen to her latest song, “breathe you in my dreams” and it’ll be all over. this is the first release from her forthcoming debut alum ‘forth corner,‘  which is scheduled to drop january 29th (u.s) and february 11, (europe) 2013. can’t wait for the video for this one. it’ll be hard to top the former matthu placek-directed opus.  peace. mø // pilgrim

from the land better known for snow and stegt flæsk than for music (well, perhaps not) the artist (karen marie ørsted) is out the gates with a certified fire starter. her track, “pilgrim” is everything one could hope for in a song. it has soulful dreamy music and vocals of such tranquility you may just imagine you’re somewhere on cloud 9. this is a sound somewhere in the realm of soulful pop, but who cares about genres when the music is such an effortless like. peace. grimes // genesis (easy girl) remix

for those familiar with grimes you know just how sub-zero chill her music can be. however, when you take a track like, “genesis” and put it into the hands of dj/producer easy girl you’re in for a dark surprise. the “genesis (easy girl) remix” is a mendicant black scrim of melancholy splendidly covered by besmirched synths and “tussled with” vocals which sometimes go beautifully staccato. this one is definitely some kind of sexy. oh before i forget, it’s a free download. so get it while it lasts. peace. the babies // get lost

kevin morby, cassie ramone, justin sullivan, and brian schleyer have this little band called the babies, and while the name may sound, well…infantile their music is assuredly not. listen to their track, “get lost” and right away you get the feeling this band is about wild raucous abandon. this is party music; the bar hopping-beer-swilling-cigarette-smoke-infused kind. the song “get lost” is the 1st single release from the band’s forthcoming lp which shares the same name. also, check out the song, “miracle mile” taken from the band’s anticipated sophomore release, our house on the hill. after the jump you can check out tour dates and figure out how you can get yourself there, i promise it’ll be a good time. peace. terraplane sun // ya never know

they say, “the west coast is the best coast,” and while the jury may still be out on that one, it safe to say there are some great bands emerging from the sunshine state. and if you had your good ear to the ground this past summer you may have heard the buzz surrounding the five-piece venice beach-based band terraplane. they have a gritty bluesy-rock sound which penetrates your skull like a hollow-tip barreling out of a shot-gun fashioned by the likes of canned heat with traces of the allman brothers . musical references aside the quintet’s dave trumfio-produced (of wilco & my morning jacket fame) friends ep will drop this coming tuesday on october 16th. for now, sit back and listen to terraplanes’s 2nd single from the friends ep, “ya never know.” peace.
