chris staples | dark side of the moon | american soft lp

The song Dark Side of the Moon is taken from Chris Staples’ Barsuk Records debut American Soft, available August 12, 2014.

In the end there are no casual Chris Staples fans. The man inspires devotion. The turnaround from casual listener to evangelist is nearly instantaneous. Play his music during a road trip with friends and inevitably someone will ask, “Who is this?” And a lifelong fan is born. Such is the unaffected power of these songs, of this voice. Chris Staples fandom is rewarding and lasting (despite his understated approach to promoting his own work, which — as it should be with all artists — seems secondary to the effort he puts into the making of it). We follow where he leads, and our numbers are growing. Peace. Continue reading “chris staples | dark side of the moon | american soft lp”

mimicking birds | bloodlines

Mimicking Birds opens up a main vein and let’s the essence of audible offerings out. We’re thankful as Sunday parishioners for the track Bloodlines. This song is of such character it’ll manage subtle slights of hand and leaves you wanting to visit often to unravel it’s tricks. But there aren’t any charades here, the music just surrounds you in feelings seldom unleashed. The track Owl Hoots is a flourish of breath stealing vapor and I am enamored like a certain Montague sweet on a beauteous Capulet.

Check out the band’s Eon album out now via Glacial Pace Records. Currently, the band is on tour with Modest Mouse and mayhap you can catch ’em. Peace. Continue reading “mimicking birds | bloodlines”

Eric Donald Johnson (born June 7, 1976) is an American singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He is best known as the leader of the influential folk-rock band Fruit Bats, and for his frequent collaborations with bands such as The Shins, Vetiver and Califone. He has also scored films, most notably Our Idiot Brother and Smashed. In 2014 it was announced he would begin a new solo recording project called EDJ.

And now, may I present to you the track Lose It All, All The Time taken from the forthcoming debut solo release EDJ out August 5th via Easy Sound Recording Co. I got an advanced copy of the album (full album review coming soon) and it soundtracked tonight’s family supper, in which I threw together my Yukon Gold and Sweet Potatoes w/ Kale and Swiss Chard recipe. Family. Food. And good music. Yes, seconds please. Peace. Continue reading “edj | edj”

I Was There: The Shelter, Detroit, Michigan | Kitten

It’s official, I got a girl crush. Kitten is the band. Chloe Chaidez is the object of my affection. I got it bad ya’ll. Yeah, I know and I am just as surprised too. Let’s get this straight. I am not some floosy easily enamored by a demi-rock Pop-goddess with the stage presence of a modern day Madge Ciccone (but with prettier and softer edges than M. Sorry Ms. Material Girl). At first brush Kitten is Madonna, Taylor Dane and Cyndi Lauper-ish, but with extra sprinkles and sweeter glitter. Yet, her sound isn’t as simplistic as it seems. There exists depths of influence and elements with deep roots from the late 60’s and 70’s. A heavy dose of the bands stemming from the British Invasion. Along with a spattering of divergent elements as well. I musn’t forget her supporting cast. Guitarist Andy Miller and bassist Chris Vogel bring the goods and then some. Kitten is purely hard candy-Pop with an independent spirit. It’s at times a funkier, more often than not a post-punkier scope and orchestration. She’s like a jawbreaker or an all-day Day-Glo sucker. Kitten’s self-titled debut album is an alt sort of Pop too, which doesn’t don primary colors. No, hers is an ultraviolet and star splashed fluorescent patina. Yes, I have a genuine and unapologetic girl crush indeed. Continue reading “I Was There: The Shelter, Detroit, Michigan | Kitten”

the colourist // lido ep

The Chainsmokers (Drew Taggart & Alex Pall ) recently accosted the track Fix This, an original track by the band The Colourist. The re-work is as shapely and voluptuous as a futuristic pin-up beauty, or it could be I am just shamelessly smitten with Maya Tuttle’s amatory vocals? Both.

Anywho, get more of the Chainsmokers here. And check out The Colourist right here on iTunes. Peace. Continue reading “the colourist // lido ep”

boards of canada // tomorrow’s harvest

Boards of Canada need little of no introduction because they’re legendary to say the least. And if you missed it their label Warp Records stream the entire Tomorrow’s Harvest yesterday (don’t worry I missed it too, sneaky bastards). Worry not though, you can still pre-order the album here, and as always I suggest the vinyl. Officially the album drops June the 11th. Peace. Continue reading “boards of canada // tomorrow’s harvest”
