Joywave / / Koda Vista

There is something very familial about the Rochester, NY band Joywave in that the band is much more than the sum of it’s four core members (Daniel Armbruster, Sean Donnelly, Paul Brenner and Joseph Morinelli), and when quartet need additional help a veritable village appears and the number of counterparts can easily swell to almost a dozen members. Perhaps that is the reason the band sounds so expansive. But quotients aside this band is drawing comparisons to MGMT and Passion Pit, and although the music call fall into the super sonic ultra electro realm is also vastly different in so many ways, but alas I’ll let you be the final judge. Listening to the bands mini-album Koda Vista one hears so many influences. Instant favorites are “Who Do You Like” and “Smokestacks” but the fun doesn’t have to stop there. For an additional hit or two on the music bong, check out the band’s August 2011 7″ featuring the songs “Ridge” and “Traveling At The Speed Of Light”. On that note, listen responsively. Peace Continue reading “Joywave / / Koda Vista”

Alcoholic Faith Mission / / Into Pieces

Alcoholic Faith Mission is a band I first began listening to a few years ago, and I’m always ready to sing, I mean, write their praises. This Danish sextet dropped their dropped their new album Ask Me This back in January and I want you to want it too. And sorry for the short notice but the band is playing at Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, MI on May 3rd. But alas, you can also cop it on Amazon too. Well, here’s hoping you enjoy this track as much as I do, and I’ll keep you posted as new material becomes available. Peace. Continue reading “Alcoholic Faith Mission / / Into Pieces”

Brothertiger / / Lovers

John Jagos is most definitely Brothertiger. And the music, well it speaks for itself. With the release of his latest LP Golden Years out now, Brothertiger is setting himself up nicely for a stellar 2012. Check out the track, “Lovers” and you’ll hear the reason for my heart-on-the sleeve enthusiasm for this Toledo, Ohio native. And if you need further inducement to fall head over heels, listen to BT‘s  cover of The Smiths old school classic “Ask” it’ll kiss you right on your sweet spot,  Hush! You know where it is. And if you’re thinking Brothertiger is new to the music scene, think again. There is a trove of music just waiting for you undivided attention over at his bandcamp, check it out. Peace.   Continue reading “Brothertiger / / Lovers”

Spoek Mathambo / / Put Some Red On It (Shabazz Palaces Remix)

According to his label Sub Pop Spoek Mathambo, “Spoek Mathambo makes the Afro-futurists look old school. With the arrival of his second album, Father Creeper, he’s one man building up an army to make his creative visions a reality, rewriting any artistic laws in his way.”

Well, I’m totally smitten and I’m loving the music, the flow, the vibe, his swag. Basically, I’m a fan, a new convert if you will. Plus, I’m earning massive cool points for puttin’ on music out of Johannesburg, South Africa. And oh, you got to check his take on the Joy Division‘s “She’s Lost Control” and if that doesn’t get you, well my friend we need to talk. Peace. Close // Perfect Darkness

Nothing like a little mystery and ambiguity to further interest. At this juncture, attempting to  remain in the shadows using only the tag Close. This eclectic electronica-producer is about to release, like a once cloistered pure white dove, his deeply personal and beautifully bruised debut LP entitled, Getting Closer. Already some über-attentive media outlets are muttering comparisons and influences, ranging from Detroit techno, House music, and Brian Enoesque references. But, all those comparisons are both true and untrue, because Close is able to go outside his influences and delve into deeper space and meaning. Are you picking up what I’m putting down?

Via his website, Close will be offering glimpses of his music, which will be updated every 24-hours. Also, check out current remixes of such notables as Fink, Little Dragon and Scuba on SoundCloud. This artist will be one to watch in 2012 for damn sure. Peace. Continue reading “Close // Perfect Darkness”

Pulled Apart By Horses // Until My Head Exploded: Greatest Hits // V.E.N.O.M (Video)

You have a tendency to perk up your ears when such a reputed indie label as Rough Trade describes a band as follows, “The band’s (Pulled Apart By Horses) self-titled 2010 debut was a sonic maelstrom of screamo and hard disco riffage; here was heavy music that you could shake a tail feather to, pop music at its most corrupted. Dance music played by wiry punk weirdo’s.” Such an introduction surely got my attention. So, get in touch with your inner ruffian and see if you can blow your speakers out playing PABH cranked up to 11. To get you up to speed, as a primer check out their 2011 release Until My Head Exploded: Greatest Hits. I gather you need no explanation on what you do with this one, but don’t be surprised if the neighbors call in 5-0. And that’s not all, I also have the band’s latest video for the raucous mosh pit ready single “V.E.N.O.M.” I warned you! Peace. the history of apple pie // mallory

I think The History of Apple Pie is my fatal fuzzy fantasy band come to life, if not they’ll do until it gets here. Their music is the perfect blend of shaggy hair in your bubble gum — don’t worry, that’s just my way of describing their unshorn shoegazy pop sound. And the vocals of Stephanie Min make want to do unmentionable things to my speakers. Like rip ’em apart and commune with their fizzling innards. Hey, what can I say? I’m weird like that. Anyway, listen to the song “Mallory,” and if it makes you feel like putting on the warm wool sweater of nostalgia and pout into your yearbook, don’t say I didn’t warn you. THOAP is mighty, mighty delicious stuff. Peace. Continue reading “the history of apple pie // mallory”

Real Estate – It’s Real

Regardless of what the current economic market reflects there is a hopeful uptick in Real Estate. Clever I know. Forgive me my horrible puns, but I am correct in this; the band Real Estate is a great location to settle your ears for a long listen. Alex Bleeker, Martin Courtney IV, Mathew Mondanile III, Jackson Pollis and Jonah Mauer round out the quintet. Although the bands latest album Days dropped back in October I am just getting around to listening to it. Partly because I’ve been inundated with so much fantastic music. But mainly because I just downloaded my pre-ordered copy a few days ago. At any rate, if you like mellow multipurpose music to get you through your days and nights intact then this band fits the bill. Peace.

Check out a live session of Real Estate performing the song “It’s Real”. Heavens to Betsy these guys sound amazing live.

Also, listen to the song “Municipality”, it will lull your soul to a peaceful place. True story.

Archer Black – Onward And Down

You’re not dreaming. You are inside a song. It is transplanting you to a place. Inside. Into the catacombs, not Dante’s Inferno deep. But far enough to leave you curious. You poke your finger into this light and siphon breathlessly. Like me your desire is to hear more of Archer Black and their beautifully rendered song “Onward And Down” is just the beginning. Peace.
