According to their label Deep Ellum Records “BLKKATHY is a Brooklyn-based duo, sometimes trio, of ladies who like to sing sad songs over very heavy bass beats...” And after listening to their songs the description is mostly true, aside from the fact that I just feel a strong compulsion to tongue kiss my speakers right now whilst Dem Bones waft seductively around my head space. Although the songs dropped last year, the girls are still gathering momentum, which will hopefully compel them towards a debut release. No word on an official release as of yet, but let’s raise a glass and toast to hope eternal.
You can still get a FREE DOWNLOAD of Dem Bones and Fake Bitch via Bandcamp. However, the crown jewel is the bass heavy staccato groove Shake You Off. As a matter of fact I’m dancin’ in my chair as I pen this. Come join me on the dance floor. Peace. Continue reading “blkkathy // dem bones + fake b###h + shake you off + video”

keeping in touch: interview with meredith meyer of young unknowns
This is the inaugural interview for my new ‘Keeping In Touch’ series where I will be checking in on artists I’ve previously reviewed just to see what they’re up to. Recently I’ve had the pleasure of corresponding with Meredith Meyer of the uniquely talented band Young Unknowns. And from this exchange of words I came away a little intrigued, a bit infatuated and a whole lot of just amazed. This is a young woman on a mission: to bring a bit of beauty and inspiration into the world. And when it comes to music there is little she won’t reveal.
D. Durand: Hello Meredith, how are you?
Meredith Meyer: I’m pretty good these days.
D. Durand: Literally, what are you doing right now?
Meredith Meyer: I just finished my lazy Saturday morning ritual of having a cup of tea and reading. Right now I’m doing some research about exotic dancers throughout history. This morning I read about Margaretha Zelle, aka The Mata Hari. Did you know she studied to be a kindergarten teacher, but when she got a job and the headmaster flirted with her, she was fired? She also refused a blindfold and kept her eyes open when she was executed by the firing squad. I find that fascinating. She looked those bastards right in the eyes. I’d like to know what was going through her mind at that moment. Continue reading “keeping in touch: interview with meredith meyer of young unknowns”
ac slater // angels with dirty basses
Its Friday the most reverent of days heralding (for most) the end of the work week. And in my mind it would be a travesty of seismic proportions to squandered it on bass-less music. Enter AC Slater and his sunny brand of mixology. After the jump crack open the cold fizzy sound of ‘Angels With Dirty Basses’ and know the book, chapter and verse of what it means to get down and get funky. So, turn it up and let the sound libation begin in earnest! Peace. Continue reading “ac slater // angels with dirty basses”
haerts // wings
No the band name is not a misprint, but the NYC-based project is worthy of a double-take, or should I say double-listen? Mind me not, but do check out their latest release “Wings“. The track provokes one (or at least me) to sky-gaze and makes me feel all grandiose and gossamer inside. Again, don’t mind me, but do find enjoyment in the music and video. Continue reading “haerts // wings”

heavenly beat // talent (full album stream)
I was duly impressed with Heavenly Beat (John Pena) since I heard his 2011 singles 7″ Suday and Faithless, the latter being was an instant favorite of mine. Now, Heavenly Beat has put out a magnificent LP with the release of Talent. The album title isn’t as pretentious as one might imagine. It seems to be more of a declaration of self-assurance, and a recognition of growth than anything haughty. This isn’t the pounding of Mr. Pena’s hands to chest, it is simply artistic confidence (well deserved). After the break listen to entire album courtesy of Captured Tracks. And thanks Mr. Pena for including the song Faithless on this album. Thumbs up, way up! Peace. Continue reading “heavenly beat // talent (full album stream)”
