shout of louds // walking in your footsteps + lissvik remix + north american tour

The Stockholm, Sweden band of five, Shout Out Louds, kick off their North American Tour in support of their enthusiastically received new album Optica. And, as an especial treat the band, along with Merge Records, tapped Prins Thomas Diskomiks to reassemble their loop-to-loop and very dreamy single Illusions. It’s a match made in remix heaven. Make your 2013 a memorable one and catch the band out on tour this summer, and please remember to give ’em my best. Peace. keeping in touch: interview with meredith meyer of young unknowns

The artist becomes the muse.
The artist becomes the muse.

This is the inaugural interview for my new ‘Keeping In Touch’ series where I will be checking in on artists I’ve previously reviewed just to see what they’re up to. Recently I’ve had the pleasure of corresponding with Meredith Meyer of the uniquely talented band Young Unknowns. And from this exchange of words I came away a little intrigued, a bit infatuated and a whole lot of just amazed. This is a young woman on a mission: to bring a bit of beauty and inspiration into the world. And when it comes to music there is little she won’t reveal.

D. Durand: Hello Meredith, how are you?

Meredith Meyer: I’m pretty good these days.

D. Durand: Literally, what are you doing right now?

Meredith Meyer: I just finished my lazy Saturday morning ritual of having a cup of tea and reading. Right now I’m doing some research about exotic dancers throughout history. This morning I read about Margaretha Zelle, aka The Mata Hari. Did you know she studied to be a kindergarten teacher, but when she got a job and the headmaster flirted with her, she was fired? She also refused a blindfold and kept her eyes open when she was executed by the firing squad. I find that fascinating. She looked those bastards right in the eyes. I’d like to know what was going through her mind at that moment. Continue reading “keeping in touch: interview with meredith meyer of young unknowns”

shiny toy guns // fading listening

on the track “fading listening” the voices of chad petree and carah faye charnow of the now undefunct pioneering electro-pop band shiny toy guns, do a sort of call and response reminiscent of the vocally handsome twining with the sonically beautiful. but don’t mind me just listen to the song and just be thankful this pioneering band of four (the other two band members being Jeremy Dawson and Mikey Martin) are finally back together and making great music. the band’s new album III is out now, and if you want to stream it then go to www. shinytoyguns.com. peace.

how to dress well // again (janet jackson cover)

Chicagoan Tom Krell is doing some of the best music of his career and under the name How To Dress Well he is sculpting his own brand of unique and wondrously sensual R&B. This time out HTDW has taken Ms. Jackson’s cautionary heartbreak ode, “Again” and channels it through his own tender heart. The results are nothing short of what the fans of HTDW (me included) have come to expect. You can get the song on the bonus 7″ for all pre-orders and you can cop it from Acéphale in North America and Weird World everywhere else. Peace. chrome sparks // marijuana

I am always amazed by the skill of this up and coming creative force Jeremy Malvin better known in certain circles as Chrome Sparks. He’s a young loin from Ann Arbor, Michigan with talent galore. I’ve written about him before, and now with his latest, “Marijuana” prepare to be totally blissed-out with the unofficial video directed by the vigilante cinematographer David Burkhart. The song “Marijuana” is taken from the latest BRL MTN compilation AAURAL II. Peace. Continue reading “chrome sparks // marijuana”

how to dress well // cold nights

There are many elements to admire about the songs How To Dress Well produces. For starters, it’s the music. Which is all soft atmospheric orchestration, allowing the listener to let go and succumb to a thing of shameless, albeit, shy beauty. Then there is Tom Krell. He looks the bookish type, but there is a sultry R&B heart beating lustily beneath his unassuming exterior. I think inadvertently it’s part of what makes HTDW so interesting. That outward projection of the nerdy arty, and maybe a bit socially awkward persona is perhaps a visual sleight of hand. Most people see this image and formulate a knee-jerk opinion. But, when Mr. Krell sits behind his instruments and opens his mouth all kinds of wonderful things happen. And the old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” slaps them up side their judgmental heads. In the end the whole package comes together, providing ample unconventional love songs.

So, whether you’re putting the finishing touches on an artful seduction or just basking within the night-time radiance of “Cold Nights” or “Ocean Floor For Everything” you will find comfort and romance in healthy virile abundance. By the way, the forthcoming LP Total Loss drops September 17th via Domino Records. Peace. Continue reading “how to dress well // cold nights”
