The Hood Internet // Touch One (Khaled + Drake + Rick Ross + Lil’ Wayne + Holy Other + Supreme Cuts)

If you’re down, then you’re down. Aaron Brink (aka ABX) and Steve Reidell (aka STV SLV) known as The Hood Internet are down. And what exactly does being down entail. Well, for starters it means not having limitations regarding what a song or track can be. Then also, being down translates into being fearless, in that you follow your heart, and the groove wherever it takes you. On both counts the Chicago-based duo more than fit the bill. And if you’re not familiar check ’em out, but it’s going to take some doing because The Hood Internet’s back catalog is massive, like juggernaut style massive. For instance, if one could take all the mind alternating grooves they’ve collectively produced over the years and put then end to end they would ring Nirvana infinitely. Check out what these two gifted sound surgeons have done with the track “Touch One,” they’ve taken some of hip-hops finest and set them adrift upon a compendium of  sensuous sound waves. They’ve enwrapped them one and all is a soft gossamer shroud, and more importantly, nary a street cred was harmed in the making of this remix. You want more? Well, you can cop this track and plenty more at www.thehoodinternet.com Peace. Continue reading “The Hood Internet // Touch One (Khaled + Drake + Rick Ross + Lil’ Wayne + Holy Other + Supreme Cuts)”

THEESatisfaction // QueenS (Our Sunday Best)

Shabazz Palaces protégés THEESatisfaction (Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White bka Cat and Stas) are the antithesis to the music industry cash cow, ala Nicki Minaj (No disrespect, just a fact). So the chances of hearing these cool and positively energetic dames on American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest anytime soon? HA! Forget about it. And, I’m fairly certain they’re alright with not ripping Victoria Secret’s runway or culling a brutish male altar-ego too. Mainly because these young hip hop heads aren’t interested in artifice, nope not even a lil’ bit. And, you can best believe both like nothing better than to shake it up a bit and bust out pop culture and put its fickleness on front street, if you catch my drift. According to various sources, the duo met at college and discovered not a few mutual interests, ranging from classic, circa 70’s R&B to Funk and Jazz influences, an affinity for William the Shakespeare, and not surprisingly the sounds and ethos of 80’s and 90’s hip hop. Together, their sound is heavily steeped in, not only R&B and the like, but thought-provoking observations on a world not seen through rose-colored lenses. Peep the newly minted single “Queens” to understand where they’re coming from. THEESatisfaction are releasing their debut LP awE naturalE via Sub Pop on March 27th. You can also cop the free download of the single QueenS here. Peace. Continue reading “THEESatisfaction // QueenS (Our Sunday Best)”

shabazz palaces // are you… can you… were you? (felt) (official video)

Seattle-based hip-hop off-shoot Shabazz Palaces is a lot of things. For one, they aren’t in any way, shape or form typical of what one might expect from the world of rap, or any other genre for that matter. But, I imagine you’re going to be alright with the sound soon to be emanating from your speakers. Shabazz Palaces is led by Ishmael Butler aka Palaceer Lazaro. Ring a bell? No? That’s cool. However, there was a time when Ishmael Butler was also known by another name, he was ‘Butterfly‘ of Grammy award-winning jazz-rap group Digible Planets.

That was way back in the day, eons ago by industry standards of measuring time and space. And much like his past namesake, the ‘Butterfly’ has undergone another metamorphosis. With his latest project, under the guise of  Palaceer Lazaro he has joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Tendai Maraire and formed the mysterious, celestial anti-body known as Shabazz Palaces.

Previously, the duo self-released the eclectic EPs, Eagles Soar, Oil Flows, as well as The Seven New, each stretching the boundaries of hip-hop into musical Pythagorean theorems. Now, we have the Black Up LP, which is so aptly released via the legendary Sub-Pop Records. After the jump, we have the first official video for the track “Are You… Can You… Were You? (Felt).” I highly recommend an oxygen tank, a space suit and a good pair of 3D glasses for your ears. Peace. Continue reading “shabazz palaces // are you… can you… were you? (felt) (official video)”

Das Racist – Sit Down Man + Michael Jackson + Rainbow In The Dark

The beyond clever ensemble known as Das Racist is as refreshing as they are hilariously dope, and subliminally informative on the sly. Himanshu Suri (aka Heems), and Victor Vazquez (aka Kool A.D.) and perennial hype man Ashok Kondabolu (aka Dap) collectively give off screwball sparks like exploding sunspots. Heem and Kool A.D flow  effortlessly without the fake bravado of so many would be rappers. I love the quirky, oddly addictive beats, which are not overbearing but allow the canvas to be painted with vocal oil paint that dry quickly into Jean-Michel Basquiat images all over your brain space. I held out, and reserved judgement until I accidentally fooled around and inadvertently fell into their track “Micheal Jackson.” Since then, I’ve vowed to listen to more, and now I’m sold. Loving the the track “Rainbow In The Dark,” too. It is as humorous as it is fresh to death, and instead of carrying a Glock it carries a water pistol filled with grape flavored Kool-Aid. Nice to hear Das Racist making rap fun again. Peace. Continue reading “Das Racist – Sit Down Man + Michael Jackson + Rainbow In The Dark”

Yelawolf f. Gangsta Boo & Eminem – Throw It Up

Listening to Yelawolf is akin to the puff-puff-pass theory, in that you want to share such excellent herb with your homies. So, its no surprise that we’re offered more of the same: mind numbing spliff smoke par excellence with silky sick flows and merciless walk-on-water beats, check out “Throw It Up” with Gangsta Boo and his majesty Eminem, and really there isn’t much more to say because the music speaks for itself. Yelawolf‘s debut studio LP Radioactive drops November 21st via Shady Records, a day I suspect will live forever on in Hip Hop infamy. Mark my words Yelawolf, aka Michael Wayne Atha, is gonna’ blow big time, and for one reason: he has the natural raw ability to hang, and many cases exceed, most rappers out here right now. Need proof? Check out his 2010 mixtape Trunk Muzik. Peace.

Wale – Ambition (Ft. Meek Mill & Rick Ross)

All roads lead somewhere. All signs speak truth. Yesterday is gone. Today is here and tomorrow ain’t promised. So, what do you have to lose by chasing your dreams? Nothing. Never settle. Never give up. Keep your chin up. And most of all FUCK the haters. Shout out to all those who reach for the sky no matter how impossible or unlikely the goal (Psst … no such thing as an impossible or unlikely goal). Peace.
