Macklemore and Ryan Lewis – Wings

Don’t front. Let’s keep it real. I like this cut for what is attempts to do. To dismantle (even a little bit) our perception and compulsion for the material thing. To sever the ties that strangle and bind us up in unnecessary pursuits for attainable but oft times needless things. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis crushed it, hit the fucking nail on the head with this one propelling “Wings” out and up into the stratosphere. You feel this one right there in the chest, or rather in your cerebral cortex. It gets complex. And really, rap is the perfect medium to present this conversation. Phil Knight you may have tricked us but M&RL are helping us to see things differently. Two thumbs up, way up. Peace.

Drake – Motto (Ft. Lil Wayne) Hey Zeus Remix

So many heads out here are eagerly anticipating the release of Drake‘s forthcoming LP Take Care. And with good reason, one look at some of the names expected to share space on the various tracks is impressive indeed: Stevie Wonder, Lil Wayne, and The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) , that’s just the short list. However, you don’t have to wait to get a little slice of what’s to come. The track “Motto” is a rapper’s delight (Ha!) and more than a little braggadocio. But really that’s to be expected from two of the illest rappers out here today. Check ’em out while Drizzy and Weezy drop rhymes over this T-Minus production. Peace. Common – Blue Sky/Sweet

What can be said about hip-hop impresario Common? A lot apparently, but the jist of this artist/actor/author/MC is that he keeps getting better with each release. Common is one the brotha’s out here doing it the way its supposed to be done, with enough style and poise to make anyone proud to say they’re a fan. Check out his latest releases “Blue Sky” and the rawkus “Sweet” and tell me son ain’t nice. Keep a look out for Common’s new album The Dreamer/The Believer to drop in December. Peace.

Childish Gambino – All the Shine (Demo)

Rap is constantly in need of revamping itself, of reinventing what was into something  new. If not refreshing, then real, naked and weird. Rap needed to shed the accoutrements of materialism and pettiness, and stare into the mirror of reality. Enter Childish Gambino. I ain’t going into a long winded bio, if you know you know, and if you don’t you should. Check out the demo “All The Shine”. Here, you get the honesty without bravado, you get rap without ugliness or idiocy. Nothing childish about CG’s word craft. I am eagerly awaiting  the debut Camp LP set for release November 15th via Glasstone Records. Peace.

Blood Orange – Champagne Coast

Blood Orange - Champagne Coast

Devonté Hynes is one of those people you never heard of, but you may be familiar with their work unawares. Mr. Hynes has produced a lot of music, most notably for Florence & The Machine, Theophilus London, and Solange Knowles just to name drop a few. Although he has produced music for himself in the past it is his new material that is shining bright all on it’s own. Blood Orange is the product of so much blood, sweat and tears, no pun intended. Seriously it’s akin to gospel music in how it moves the listener with heart conviction. It has taken almost 2 years to complete, with so many ups and downs along the way it almost didn’t see the light of day. But I for one am thrilled to see, or rather hear, its magic and power. Check out the release “Champagne Coast” and let it swirl through your head on repeat. Peace.

Domo Genesis – Let’s Smoke

Domo Genesis

Domo Genesis is making his way out of obscurity and into the light of day. No longer is he content being the chill spliff smoking homeboy of  the rap ensemble Odd Future. Yeah, you know the crew which consists of  Tyler the Creator and Earl the Sweatshirt. Some fans and critics pass DG off as the lesser talent of the collective aggregate known as Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, often abbreviated OFWGKTA. I know, quite a  mouthful huh? However, with his second mixtape release since last year’s Rolling Papers, Under the Influence is nothing short of 35 sweet-minutes of the 20-year-old rapper showcasing his skill-set for dope rhymes. No matter what others say Domo Genesis can hold his own against his more recognizable peers. And really, is there anything wrong with a little recreational ganja? I think not. So, for all those who indulge from time to time this one is for you and Jerome Simpson.  Crank it up and alllow “Let’s Smoke” to fill your head-space and have a Happy Monday. Peace.

Childish Gambino Signs to Glassnote Records

Childish Gambino

How long has Childish Gambino been ripping it up with nowhere to call home (Label)? Well, now the wait is finally over. Don Glover aka Childish Gambino has signed to Glassnote Records. Gambino Heads can expect the rapper’s debut LP Camp to drop this fall. See, there really is a Santa Claus. To celebrate I’ve posted the word playalistic Freaks and Geeks video below.
