bon iver // towers (official video)

It’s not that Justin Vernon of Bon Iver is feeling himself after his 54th Grammy Awards nomination and subsequent wins for Best Alternative Music Album and Best New Artist respectively, anything but. He still remains humble and true to his craft, and in some respects maintains, no elevates his integrity for not bowing to the pressure of the machine by not performing. His reason for shunning the stage and thus losing an opportunity to be seen by some 39.3 million viewers (Nielsen Co.)? Well, it’s simple. Justin Vernon is his own man. It is apparent Justin Vernon loves the music he creates. But it goes beyond that, he respects and cares deeply for his bandmates too. And lastly, he respects his chosen craft and his fans. Don’t me wrong, performing on a Grammy stage is not necessarily a bad thing, it’s not. But Justin Vernon didn’t want to have to jump through hoops to do it. Why go through the staid motions of a heartless collaboration not of his own choosing? And so he demurred. What Bon Iver did is laudable to say the least. And yes, there are more important things in this world than award shows, but what Mr. Vernon represented, was that you can be present at an award, and even graciously accept an award, but you don’t have to be the award show. And he didn’t. Mr. Vernon knows in his heart that the music is infinitely more important than a Grammy award. What a class act.

Now, I almost forgot I was writing about Bon Iver’s new NABIL directed video for “Towers” and it is beautifully shot and choke full with visual metaphor aplenty. And yes, it many even be channeling Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man And The Sea, but that’s a way cool thing too. Peace. Continue reading “bon iver // towers (official video)”

L-Vis 1990 // Tonight (Video)

“In real love you want the other person’s good. In romantic love you want the other person.” —Margaret Anderson

Here’s the deal, in real life James Connolly is madly in love, perhaps enthralled, with his real life girlfriend. Awww so sweet, right? It’s all good! Except, when James Connolly expresses himself, you better watch out, because the long shadows of his thinking cat will engulf everything, and his creations are mostly known for inducing revelers to dance and party the night away.

And so, in the vein of love we find James C. paying homage to such iconic celluloid road trip films like True Romance, Paris Texas and Wild at Heart, London-based producer/DJ James Connolly bka L-Vis 1990 has outdone himself with the video premiere of “Tonight” (Ft. Samantha Lim). This video isn’t just ‘a video’, it is a furtherance of the previous video for “Lost In Love”(Ft. Javeon McCarthy). This couplet of images propels the idea of love continuously forward. It is a love story represented by real-life couple Cindy & Chachi (18 and 19 respectively) and their on-screen journey to the magical mecca of Vegas to get married. These videos are tributes to love and spontaneity, bruised innocence and flagging naïveté, and the enduring idea of two souls hitched together in the paradise of a universe of their own making. If you’ve been in love you’ll get it. But, if you haven’t known the effects of the inebriating cocktail of romantic love, then I charge you to most definitely ‘go there’. Live a little and love a lot. Peace.   Continue reading “L-Vis 1990 // Tonight (Video)”

Spanish Prisoners // Know No Violence (Video)

Check out the Jono Chanin directed video for Spanish Prisoners’ first single “Know No Violence,” from their Gold Fools album. The video has all the snowy goodness of the white winter season, plus a delusional amnesiac hipster chick. Yes, good stuff. I really love this song, so much so that I’ve provided the lyrics so you too can all sing along. I am really too nice to you guys. Peace.

princess chelsea // the cigarette duet (video)

When checking out the cutesy song The Cigarette Duet by Princes Chelsea that’s gone viral on Youtube, some words of caution. Don’t make the mistake of expecting the rest of the songs featured on her debut album ‘Lil Golden Book as being equally didactic. Although it may appear Ms. Chelsea Nikkel has a thing against societies double-trouble legal vices; cigarettes and booze (listen to Too Fast To Live as well) it’s all good though. But don’t worry Princess C. isn’t all about composing quirky moralistic pop odes. No, she likes to have fun just like everybody else. I swear. If you’re looking for something that is witty and filled with, in some cases, maudlin dream-mare, then Princess Chelsea is the one for you. And if you like visions of Alice In Wonderland gone all Gothic, and I do, then you like her just fine.  I love her song, “Yulia” which is delivered with clipped no-nonsense enunciation, and the video for the song only lends further to her off kilter style and adroit observations. For more, visit her SoundCloud for gems like “Caution Repetitive” and “Goodnight Little Robot Child” as well as several other songs from Princess Chelsea, our pop royalty debutante from Auckland, New Zealand. Peace. Continue reading “princess chelsea // the cigarette duet (video)”

Kishi Bashi // Manchester (Live Performance (Video)

When I first heard Kishi Bashi sing the song “Manchester” it instantly hit a chord with me, it’s like a tidal wave of sunlight, or akin to time spent with a good friend and every second spent in their company is all smiles a magical laughter. The song Manchester just leaves me feeling refreshed and just ‘good’! I hope it has the same effect on you. Now, Kishi Bashi has the highly imaginative, and expertly shot Brandon LaGonke directed live performance of Manchester, with not only more of his beautiful lulling voice, but his Pied Piper violin work is as beautiful as it is masterful, and o-machidō sama, just check it out after the jump. Peace. Continue reading “Kishi Bashi // Manchester (Live Performance (Video)”

Childish Gambino // Heartbeat (Video)

I have listened to the entire Childish Gambino album Camp countless times, but this here song just stays inside my head and rattles around waiting for opportunities to sidetrack me with its irresistible house=tinged beat. And now there is a video, so now my eyes are going to be looking for ways to get me to watch it often. Do you have the same affliction? Lucky me. Peace. Erasure // Fill Us With Fire (Video)

Long before electro-pop had much of an audience, or was even considered cool, there was Andy Bell and Vince Clarke taking a step into the unknown with, if not bravado, then youthful naïveté, and an ocean worth of enthusiasm and talent galore. Since 1985 the duo have been busy creating hit after hit, selling more than 25 million albums worldwide. So, if you’re thinking these gentlemen are new to the scene, well think again. Long before there was: MGMT, Passion Pit, Cut Copy or Hot Chip, and a slew of other bands with similar sonic ties, there was Erasure (Factoid: Vince Clarke was a founding member of Depeche Mode). I applaud them for being true originals and visionaries, whose music has really become the soundtrack to so many lives across the globe. I also want to salute Andy Bell for his courage, for being one of the first openly gay music icons to come out, which was no mean feat in the 80’s. Erasure will release Fill Us With Fire as the third single from their Tomorrow’s World album on March 12th 2012. I’ve been a fan, I’m still a fan. Peace. Oh No Oh My // Walking Into You (Video)

By some accounts the band Oh No Oh My came into being way back in ’04 and have been a steady an ongoing and growing (musically successful) project ever since. However, contrary to their almost decade long existence, their top-notch second full-length release People Problems dropped with a splash in 2011. I don’t know what happened in the in-between years, but I suspect it was just the way things worked out. Do me a favor, when you listen to People Problems, do so in the quiet of solitude and let these amazing songs come to you on their own terms. And I wouldn’t say this if it wasn’t true, this is another one of those ‘must have’ albums you’ll want in your growing vinyl collection. The album leads off with “Walking Int Me” and this, for me, set up nicely a great first impression of a band I only came to know of through some totally nefarious and clandestine turn of events. More on those events, like NEVER! But I digress…

ONOM is full of surprises, and this album is filled with song after song of melodic, rich and deep sound craft. With their multiple-instrumentation, spot-on guitar work and the odds and ends of electronic shenanigans, all this whirling around Greg Barkley’s color of sunshine voice. No matter how one describes this Austin, Texas-based outfit it only comes down to three things. Good. Gooder. Goodest. Check out Oh No Oh My‘s People Problems via bandcamp after the jump, and watch the (I want problems like this) video for, “Walking Into You.” Peace. The Black Keys // Gold On The Ceiling (Video)

You don’t need me to tell you anything you don’t already know about the Black Keys. You already know Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach are the rocking-est two-piece in a long time, if eve (Sorry White Stripes and Japandroids). Now, we have some more scruffy visual proof to back up the shit-talking our ears have been spouting off about, no matter how justified they are. Watch the guys from Akron, Ohio rock-n-roll and bring the house down with their video for “Gold On The Ceiling.” Crank it LOUD! Peace. Continue reading “The Black Keys // Gold On The Ceiling (Video)”
