swimm | beverly hells ep

Los Angeles-based Swimm (Chris Hess and Adam Winn) release their 6-track Beverly Hells EP via 24 West Records. This isn’t just another tidy release, these are a pocketful of songs of an ebullient vibrancy, and a few all aglow with a lustrous meditative quality (me thinks the tracks All The Time and Suddenly a thoughtful nods to introspection). Good music and a couple of good guys. Psst! My all time favorite Swimm track is Shy, just thought you would like to know. Perfectly perfect! Peace. Continue reading “swimm | beverly hells ep”

private island | a good look ep

Los Angeles is known for just about every form of musical entertainment, so it’s no surprise to see Private Island rise to the top of the best bands The City of Angels has to offer. The band’s A Good Look EP is a handy collection of four songs, and they’re a good indication that this band will have a future taking up residence in my earhole. After the jump, check out the audios for the tracks Bear Hands, Don’t Call Me, and Dissolve. Here’s to a full-length from this outfit. Peace. Continue reading “private island | a good look ep”

king | debut lp

Los Angeles-based neo-soul spouting trio King is Paris Strother, Amber Strother and Anita Bias. Their music comes from a place where every nerve and nuance is familiar with. Four years ago Mr. Roger Nelson was spellbound by their approach and take on music.

Yesterday the ladies King were featured on NPR. And today, it’s your turn to listen, fall head over heels and spread the word. Stat tuned for their full-length debut, We Are KING is dropping soon. Peace. Continue reading “king | debut lp”

the mercy beat | an act of mercy | sweet | video

The Mercy Beat hits low. They know what we like and they use it against us. Here they offer their track, “Sweet,” in a capsule of cinematic eye-candy. The video is nice but I reckon so is the rest of the aural anatomy that is sure to follow. I hereby dub TMB Seductive and majorly Rockeous. The last word I made up, totally apt. More please! warpaint // warpaint

The band Warpaint is a Los Angeles based quartet comprised of Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), Theresa Wayman (guitar/vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums). To say that this follow-up is “highly anticipated” is an understatement considering the reception that their debut received when it was released at the end of 2010.

Warpaint was recorded and mixed by Flood, aside from two songs that were mixed by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Atoms For Peace). The album was conceived after some truly inspirational writing and recording sessions that took place in The Joshua Tree late last year. The band was joined there by visionary director Chris Cunningham, who has partnered with them for many of the album visuals including the cover. He spent two years filming and photographing the band as they made new music.

Warpaint is a well-oiled machine. They weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy. Both live and on record, Warpaint sound like they’re channeling something truly otherworldly, and mystical. They are also a band that truly enjoys playing together. Emily and Theresa have been friends since they were kids, and the bond that the four of them have is truly special. Peace. Continue reading “warpaint // warpaint”

taiwo heard // frontier to eternity ep (our sunday best)

Ground control to Major Tom we have Taiwo Heard. Copy?

taiwo heard  //  frontier to eternity ep

Taiwo Heard may have been born and raised in Washington, D.C. but his musical influences are anything but local. So, if you’re in the mood for rock-grunge-ish meets electronica then listen as you glisten to Taiwo Heard’s debut Frontier To Eternity EP. The end result is a mix bag of  musical influences, i.e. classic rock, R&B, Soul, etc. Mr. Heard music sounds homogenous, but only partly so, it lacks the cloying and redundancy commercialism. Yet, the music occupies the realm of the familiar and the innovative, simultaneously. Basically, it’s fresh like the heliosphere blowing through the young lungs of a burgeoning solar system. anna lunoe // anna lunoe mix

Honestly I can’t think of a better way to kick off another fine Summer weekend than with a bangin’ new mellifluous dance music mix from the incomparable Anna Lunoe.  This particular mix first aired on Evolution/Dim Mak Radio on the 4th of July and, as expected, features Anna’s signature style of dead on bulls-eye, high quality, proper like House music, sure to get any and all bottoms shakin’ this weekend. Peace. Continue reading “anna lunoe // anna lunoe mix”
