Provider

Memo finna start acting out if I don’t see him soon
Yeah my best friend ain’t backing out, it’s still on sight, fool
I’m the only one out here on the night loops
I’m the only one out here on the night loops
Trophy case still light, body need a race stripe
And these minerals on my body break light
And these reds on my body brakelight
New man comin’ up ahead on his own two
Is you a natural blondie like Goku?
Sleepin’ on my belly in a loop like a serpent
Talking Heads ripplin’ on the surface

Eyes low, chin heavy shoegazer
Moonwalkin’, R.I.P. Stanley Kubrick
You had you some birthdays, could you prove it?
Show me the wisdom in your movement
Show me some wisdom in your movement

Feelings you provide
Feelings you provide
I know it, I know it
The feelings I, the feelings, I know it, I
Feelings you provide
Feelings you provide
I know it, I know it
The feelings, I know it, the feelings, I, I

Tonight I might change my life
If you lived like I live
You couldn’t live without it
Said I’d be your new best friend
But what more? Yeah
Ain’t too late to out
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ahhh
Provide, provide
Pro…

Ooh, oooh, oooh
Tonight I might change my life, all for you
All for you (Provide)

Provided, diamond lane that didn’t exist

Packed the Astro van and brought my kids through

Prado tee on the eldest, throw the Gildan on the children

Hand-me-downs fits
Chest pass, see mist off rotation (Swish, swisha) Stiff smile just like Aphex Twin (Yeah, come to daddy, yeah)

Pat the Patagonia pockets, tryna find my zip, (uh, where it’s at? Yeah)
Stiff smile just like I’m Aphex Twin (Yeah, come to daddy, yeah)
Pat the Patagonia pockets, tryna find my zip (uh, where it’s at? Yeah)
Blunt twist, tightropes, I’m not fallin’ off (never that, no)
Watch friends, go pro through fisheye lens, drownin’ off clear
I just saw JAWS, divin’ under influence

Been feelin’ like the Lord just out of reach for me (for me)
How I feel lettin’ man speak
How I feel lettin’ man speak for me (for me)
Holyfield, keep your ears split for me
Can’t show my face if you spit for me
Spit for me, yeah

Eyes low, chin heavy shoegazer
Moonwalkin’, R.I.P. Stanley Kubrick
You had you some birthdays, could you prove it?
Show me the wisdom in your movement

Daniel Caesar Violet Review

Daniel Caesar does a lot with his universe-given voice and he uses it as a power for good. But what I love and admire most about Daniel Caesar is his ability to convey genuine emotion in the form of fear, hope, uncertainty, and an authentic jubilation to be doing what he is doing.  Growing up in a small town in Oshsawa, Canada into a very religiously rigorous household with so many constraints and little freedom proved to be the perfect place to create the persona we know of today as Daniel Caesar. Because without his particular parentage, childhood, religious experience, and involvement in the church choir we would not know the beautiful pain we hear in so many of his touching songs. And what’s equally amazing is he’s just getting started. And, I know, I’m late to the game but better late than never. Check out the track, Violet to get a glimpse into this up and coming singer/songwriter’s musical vision, approach, and execution. It really is quite something to hear. Much love.

it’s been a long four years since one of the most under the radar acts released their incredibly touching and self-titled debut Hundred Waters courtesy of OWSLA. And although our appetites for more have been temporaily sated with the bands 5-track Currency EP earlier this year we still crave more. With the reveal of the first single Blanket Me, fans are reminded of the many reasons we  love Hundred Waters. This song is powerful in scope and lifts you up, sweeping you away upon gosomer wings. Beautifully majestic. Mostly though it is the beautific lightning strike delivered through the silken vocals of Nicole Miglis, her delivery is salve for what ails you.  The single is out now and hopefully signals the release of a forthcoming album on the horizon. We’ll keep you abreast, but for now enjoy. Peace.

Australia’s Simon Okely is Slow Dancer and his brand of music is drenched is soulful permutations from a long-ago era. Slow Dancer’s current release, In A Mood courtesy of ATO Records, is a collection of bluesy, folksy, and jazzy odes armed to disarm and seduce. But above all Slow Dancer’s current body of work evokes romance and a delightful tenderness, and displays an artist paying homage to the best crooners of the 60s and 70s. This is an album definitely geared towards low-lights, easy conversations, sipping bourbon and enjoying the company of a lover.  An album which will set the mood for good times ahead and perhaps bouts of self-introspection. Also, I swear vocalist Simon Okely is channeling James Taylor like a mug! Enjoy the featured track I Would, and rest of the In A Mood album release soon and often. Catch Slow Dancer on tour, dates after the jump. Peace.

i’ve read many over analyzed reviews concerning the album Planetarium by the super group consisting of Sufijan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, and James McAlister, that is nigh impossible to get an idea of whether I am reading reviews penned by living and breathing humans or unfeeling bots.

Planetarium 4AD

when approaching new music my methhod is this, mostly ignore other reviews at all costs. reading to what somebody else has to say can often muddy the waters. so i just listen to the music, beleaguered or unfettered within my own limited experiences and perspectives. and by doing things this way is assertively and fundamentally okay with me. although, i must add sonic missteps do occur so there’s that. but isn’t the possibility of disappointment part and parcel to the discovery of new music? the risk of the music not meeting your expectations happens. that’s just life. generally speaking though unless your going out on a limb and dropping the needle on a band or artist’s music you haven’t enjoyed before it is pretty much a safe bet you will like their new material, but they’re exceptions. but if i don’t like something it isn’t wrong to critque it. i just do it tastefully minus the robost disdain. hence, you won’t read negative reviews by me on my blog. not that you’ll like everything here, but you just might.

why is it i without negative reviews? well, because if i don’t like the music what’s the point of spreading negetivity? hell, i didn’t like john coltranes’ ‘a love surpreme’ upon first listen. so what do i know? in a nut shell, i like what i like and that’s the way it is. however, with the release of Planetarium, which i picked up at a local record store, i was both lucky and appreciatve. while combing through the stacks i chanced upon this would be jewel and remembered i had been looking for it but had forgotten my curiosity interest about it until now. serendip. but even after my purchase it was a full week before i dropped the needle on it. but drop the needle i did.

in store, i queried the staff, “have you guys listened to this? “Nada,”was their unified response. i stood there with the album in my hands admiring the artwork on the front and back. reading the names at the bottom of the album of which only two i immediately knew, solo artist Sufijan Stevens and Bryce Dessner of band The National. my reasoning, knowing two of the four artists gave me a 50% chance of striking gold. and further, would Sufijan and Dessner make an album with bums? i think not.  so, stood there in the record store and i made the decision to go for it. And neither did i want to look up reviews online. and here’s the thing, i would rather ask a store clerk about an album as opposed to reading an oftentime highbrow ream about how bereft of substance a body of music is based on some schooled critic’s over static filter of which i cannot (nor want to) identify with. i am just coming for the music and how the music initially makes me feel. i just want what the artist has done to be agreeable and to create a medium for further comtemplation and self-analysis. if the music makes me feel something good, then it has upheld it’s end of the conversational bargain and there is hope that this dialogue will evolve and continue. that it will reveal facets and a range of temperatures both cold and hot. Plantarium meets this criteria and for me that is all that matters. i like this album and think you will too.

what an absolutely beautiful body of work. the songs work upon the theme rather than towards it, or rather within it, majestically bespoke. evoking awe and humility and so many other congenial and emotive reckonings. i am at peace with the music because the music has allowed me to be at peace with myself. i listen through the unrefined ear of my own dilettante experience and i am copacetic with that. peace.

Fleet Foxes Crack-Up

fleet foxes  |  crack up

To say the Portland, Oregon-based band Fleet Foxes, have been in limbo for the past six years is not only unfair but offensive in the worst possible way. This is an album which has absorbed, not only the past six years, but both further back and in a future projected with a bit a wary trepidation as well. Crack-Up, here is an album which may be more Helplessness Blues than the original Helplessness Blues.

To indicate Crack-Up is the makings of a more exact and indicate Crack-Up is the makings of an exact and exploratory version of the former body of work is not a dig. It only means than Mr. Peckhold hasn’t deviated from his path. This band obviously found their grooves years ago, but Helplessness Blues and Crack-Up settle into the groove and meditate on the theme.

It is clear this band want to locate areas within the collective hearts and minds to meander into darkness and rejoice in facets of light. This body of work is yet another entry into a continuous allegory. An allegory which is decidedly earth spun and judged upon its own eloquent merits.

War On Drugs A Deeper Understanding

The Philadelphia band War On Drugs keeps getting better and better! It’s true. I have been a fan since 2009 upon hearing “I’ve been wandering by your room and nothings coming out…” This band moves you, gets into your pores, drips from you ear-space and cuts into your emotions like a highly keen razor-edged knife. It’s is an apt descriptor, because, you won’t know how this music affects you until you experience it and try to move away and live without it. Then like a razor ghosting over the skin, you’re cut! Yet, the cut seems at first superficial, you don’t know its there until you disturb it, then the flesh pours out a fine rivulet of bright red blood. The only workable tourniquet is to play the music often and loud. Great music is like that, it does something to you, and the War On Drugs there’s plenty to enjoy.

Yet, it’s the music and naturally Adam’s (Granduciel) incredible voice, a voice of tempered nihilistism wrought into a communicable and warm docility. A voice that’ll catch you up and lay you down amid a range of emotions both high and low. But, Adam’s voice catches fire and draws nerve from such meditative orchestration. The pulsing locomotive churn of drummed up primitiveness, the ever present silt of electric guitar as it comes at you in waves of feverish calm. For instance, try and sit still sit and listen to An Ocean Between The Waves, a track lifted from the band’s Lost In A Dream (2014) and not get lost and found. I fucking dare you! This album, this particular song re-centers me. I would have to admit this is my favorite rock band, second only to Radiohead and whatever else Tom Yorke is doing. But where was I?

The recent drop, Holding On, taken from the WOD’s forthcoming release A Deeper Understanding, is a great reintroduction to a highly anticipated body of work by this incredibly impactful band. The song reassures fans of a return to an ongoing consistency continued. I must also offer that this first song, Holding On, has me a bit spooked. Why? I mean, just listen to it. If this is the jumping off point of the new album what the hell is the rest of the album going to unleash? Holding On is six minutes and 29 seconds of introspective bliss. It’s got the driven heartbeat, the signature imprint of the War On Drugs. But is also has all of the hope and brilliance of a new day’s sunrise and promise. This song is optimism personified:

“Ain’t no way I’m gonna last.

Hiding in the seams, I can’t move the past.

Feel like I’m about to crash.

Riding the same line, I keep keeping on…”

The new album, A Deeper Understanding, drops August 25th, 2017 courtesy of Atlantic Records. Peace.

War On Drugs: Holding On, Lyrics:

Once I was alive and I could feel
I was holding on to you
And I redefined the way I looked at dawn inside of you

I went down a crooked highway
I went all outside the line
I’ve been rejected, now the light has turned and I’m out of time

Ain’t no way I’m gonna last
Hiding in the seams, I can’t move the past
Feel like I’m about to crash
Riding on my line, keep keeping on

Once we were apart and I could see red
Never trying to turn back time
Never meant to bring my pain to the front and into your life

Now I’m headed down a different road
Can we walk it side by side?
Is an old memory just another way of saying goodbye?

Ain’t no way I’m gonna last
Hiding in the seams, I can’t move the past
Feel like I’m about to crash
Riding the same line, I keep keeping on

I ain’t never going to change
He’ll never get in line
I keep moving on the path, yeah
Holding on to mine

When you talk about the past
What are we talking of?
Did I let go too fast?
Was I holding on too long?

Ain’t no truths from the past
As silent as the sea
Am I holding on too long?
But you’re right in front of me

And I’m moving on a cast
Shadows on my seam
I keep moving to changes, yeah
Ooh

Heart or hope
Heart or hope
Heart or hope
Heart or hope.

OKNOTOK 1997-2017

For diehard Radiohead fans the newly mastered track I Promise is no surprise, the song has been in the bands repertoire and spotted here and there for over twenty years and some change. However, what is new is the band’s forthcoming OK Computer OKNOTOK 1997 2017.

Now, that is something to kick the can down the street about, no? I for one, am looking forward to dropping the needle down on the probably elegant vinyl edition of the 20th anniversary issue.

After the jump, check out the Michał Marczak directed video for the track I Promise and get all starry-eyed and fanstruck! I know I did. Peace.

About the Gorillaz. Well, as one of my all-time favorite bands they haven’t failed me and with the release of their brand new spanking 26-track album (Yes! 26 tracks!) Humanz courtesy of Parlophone Records, they sound better than ever! It is crazy to imagine that it has been 7 years since their last release. But, what’s really cool is the fact that collectively the Gorillaz have not missed a fuckin’ beat. I don’t even know where to start with this review.

I don’t really know what to say except, if you’re already a fan you are gonna love it! And if you are new to the Gorillaz you’re gonna love it too! This album, like all of their work, is multi-generational and it slices across so many lines of demarcation: race, class, political leanings, etc. Name any other band which could have pulled off such a feat so seemingly effortlessly? Nada! Damon Albarn has raised the bar here, and he has enlisted so many wonderful iconic musicians and performers from a cavalcade of genres and musical styles. Case in point, the track Charger (feat. Grace Jones! It bangs! But there are so many stupid awesome examples and stupefying collaborations. Ticker Tape (feat. Carly Simon and Kali Uchis) smolders and disintegrates into ashes of profound and beautiful artistry and execution. SIGH! Go listen to this album! Right now you can experience it in all of it’s streaming and wonderful glory on

Go listen to this album already! Right now you can experience it in all of it’s streaming and wonderful glory on Spotify. I ain’t even kidding with you bruh. Enjoy, and as always stay true and you. Peace.

Sir Frank Ocean drops new track Lens w/Travis Scott and it’s not so much a sparkler (it is a sparkler) as it is unexpected and out of the blue. But we know that’s just Mr. Oceans style and patented preferred modus operandi to toss out musical bones whenever he dines to do so, but as long as he keeps dropping smooth shit we’re A-O-KAY with it! The track opens up with a slow motion timbre and mood, which is perhaps the best way to open a Frank Ocean track. This one is a small toke but the hit is just as potent and effective. It expands and allows for plenty of space for reflection and introspection, which seems to be par for the course ala his post Blond release. This one is a collabo with Travis Scott and if this is what they’re putting out then, more of this please! Peace.
