tops // turn your love around

Luckily for music lovers, the music scene today is much like the universe, it is continuously expanding. Just about every day or so a new band is materializing and casting their songs into the fray. Being the amateur astronomer that I am, whilst stargazing recently I spotted the band TOPS streaking across the sky of my purview. Now, I’m not one to succumb to wild conjecture concerning bands of another time and place, but I must admit this band has a sound not well known nor oft encountered, let alone appreciated. But, as always so much of a band’s appeal is determined by exposure to the right audience, and I’m hoping the audience I write for is listening with their ears wide-open. When I first listened to the song “Turn Your Love Around” it reminded me of  something out of the mid to late 60’s era. It sounds 60’s chic with a modern anesthetic and sensibility, not so much flower child, as an reinvention of the likes of an Marianne Faithful or Gayle McCormick, but conjoined with present day 21st century modernity. Yes, it may sound a bit 60-ish, strutting around in new white knee-high boots, but it also sounds new and capable of introducing listeners to a classic sound reexamined. Both the songs “Turn Your Love Around” and “Diamond Look” are tracks from the forthcoming  full-length album Tender Opposites. You can Pre-Order via Arbutus Records a cassette format or CD. However, the cool thing about the cassette is it will have: Continue reading “tops // turn your love around”

Carousel // Know It’s Right (Band To Watch)

Jackson Phillips, Kevin Friedman, and Tyler Cratcha met in Boston at Berklee College of Music and it’s been on and poppin’ every since. We’re in an age, where any talented DIY musician can have access to the tools to create high-quality music from almost anywhere, and that’s a good thing. The trio known as Carousel is the perfect example of talent + creativity + determination = songs to tuck inside your heart of hearts and dance across the Milkyway. Check out their latest release “Know It’s Right” and you’ll be smitten. I also have their totally nitrous oxide-esque song “Thrill” and you’ll pinch yourself at the luck your having today, musically speaking that is. You’re gonna want to visit the bands SoundCloud for more good stuff. Oh, and I can’t leave you without an apt descriptor. The music of Carousel is like the best burger you ever had, but with a thick slice of cotton candy resting atop the tangy pickles. From these guys we’re expecting a meteoric rise! Enjoy and as always. Peace. Continue reading “Carousel // Know It’s Right (Band To Watch)”

The perpetually rambunctious band Grouplove is wishing everyone the very best in 2012, and they’re showing the fan-love too by giving out a brand spanking new Gigamesh remix of “Tongue Tied” over at their  Facebook page. Huh., what are you waiting for? You may be excused. The band has also revealed, over the next couple weeks they’ll be giving out a several additional remixes as well. I love this song, it makes me all shimmery inside. Peace. Continue reading “Grouplove // Tongue Tied (Gigamesh Remix}”

Wild Nothing // Nowhere (Ft. Andrea Estella)

Jack Tatum obviously is a very talented troubadour, he’s got to be. Why? Well, in order to, first imagine every song, then to take all those wild imaginings, and tame them. Secondly, he lovingly sews them piece by piece into realities of pure somber sound, this takes some doing. But, I like you so appreciate his labor of love. Now, he’s at the helm and piloting Wild Nothing towards the spanking new 7″ “Nowhere” scheduled to drop February 21st via Captured Tracks. This release will also have the b-side “Wait” which will drop later. But for now, enjoy the new material and stay on your toes for a forthcoming LP due out sometime in 2102. Don’t worry I’ll keep you posted. Also, if you’re wondering who the angel is singing the lyrics, “Don’t come over, unless you want to feel something…” well wonder no more, it’s  Andrea Estella of Twin Sister. Peace. kids // my sincerest apologies (video)

Jonas Linngård and Maria Pettersson are the Swedish-duo KIDS, and with their laudable debut self-titled EP they are betting you’ll become a fan (Just like me). But really, becoming a fan is the easy part, simply because the music gets stuck in your ears like good gossip. After listening I’m sure you’ll be telling your friends, and they’ll tell their friends etc. ad nauseam. And call me odd or just a slave to beauty. But when watching the “My Sincerest Apologies” video and Maria P. sings the lyrics “The only place you’ve seen, well you, you ain’t seen nothing…” with just a bit of a wry grin on her Dakota Fanning look-a-like face. Well, it just makes me smile a bit too. Good looks aside, there are additional reasons for my glee. Check out the songs, “Exhale” and “Yours” and this dúo will be swiftly downloaded and swimming around your flat muy pronto. Don’t believe me, head over to kontrollrecordings.com and download the entire EP for free. Yup! It’s official Swedes are way cool. Peace. Continue reading “kids // my sincerest apologies (video)”

florian lunaire | a year’s worth of song | dramamine | video

florian lunaire | dramamine | video

His official press release, reads as such, “The most striking thing about Florian Lunaire, is how difficult it is to place him.” But for me, it’s easy: place him on your heart and pull the soft woolen afghan of his songs up close.

You will listen to these songs and you’ll notice a stark simplicity. As if perhaps the songs started off adorned with all manner of gaudy accouterments, but in the end everything unnecessary was shorn away. Leaving only raw glistening bones drying in the sun of our collective audience. I would like to imagine, things like the need to categorize songs is a dying practice. Wishful thinking for certain, but still I dream. Perhaps, that is the bane of the majority of the music industry: its constant pursuit to market and label the commodity of song. I’ll use a universal signifier here, by simply saying Florian Lunaire writes beautiful music and it is “good.” By proclaiming something is good cuts through all the bullshit. No need for further explanation, or having to defend your musical taste. Because already, by hearing or reading that something is good, sets the stage of positive expectation.  So, if you’re a fairly well-adjusted bloke or lass, then I suspect you’ll like the music on review. If you’re a lover of life, and not a warmonger or tyrant, then you’ll have heart enough to let your guard down and let the music in; and listen to the melody of this young singer-songwriter’s raging heart. Peace. Continue reading “florian lunaire | a year’s worth of song | dramamine | video”

Sleigh Bells // Comeback Kid // Born To Lose (Video)

Aside from the obvious cool points scored by Derek sporting a Nirvana tee and the always vivacious Alexis jumping up and down on a bed with Cherubs in the background casting knowing looks, then there is the matter of the rifle. I scratch my chin wondering if there is a Freudian reference running amok. Nevermind, everything in its right place. Let’s talk about the latest single “Comeback Kid” and all the brouhaha it’s causing. Well, there isn’t much to say except Alexis isn’t taking any shit from any would-be beau. ‘Nuff said. Peace. Oberhofer // Heart

Check out the new Oberhofer song Heart and tell me it’s not a wonderful thing. I have kept up with this New York-based band for a while now, and when you listen to this song you’ll understand why. The new album titled Time Capsules II, will be released on March 27th via Glassnote Records. I will say this, Brad Oberhofer had outdone himself this time (no surprise), and we’re the lucky bastards because of it. Also, check out Oberhofer Tour Dates too. I’m going, so you really don’t have an excuse. Peace. Continue reading “Oberhofer // Heart”

Kishi Bashi // Room For Dream EP

I’ve come across a veritable deluge of outstanding music since I began this music blog back in August 2011. And when music is such an integral part of one’s existence you get very picky,  developing quite a discerning ear for what will and will not cut the mustard. I came across Kishi Bashi by a fortuitous accident. I was searching for tickets for the Loney Dear show in Chicago with Of Montreal headlining on March 28th at the Metro. But I found so much more, for also on this bill was, at the time an unknown artist, Kishi Bashi. So, I being the curious sort I went looking for all things related to Kishi Bashi and boy was I rewarded. It went something like this Facebook, Twitter, kishibashi.com, and then ended beautifully at kishibashi.bandcamp.com. It was like uncovering a serendipitous mystery of sorts. A mystery, which in the end left me with an incredible first impression of the inventive, and highly accomplished musician K Ishibashi. The Room For Dream EP is four extraordinary songs brimming with enough spine tingling effervescence, upon listening you’d swear your Set-Adrift-On-A-Memory-Bliss. The utter vitality of the music makes you want to succumb to one of the most primal impulses known to mankind. To dance, to move your body and smile. What more could you ask of music than that? I’m looking forward to the Chicago show.  And now I’ve more songs to sing along to: Manchester, Bright White, Conversation At The End Of The World, and Evalyn, Summer Has Arrived. I’ll know them all, or perhaps they’ll know me. Also, Kishi Bashi is also working on a new album scheduled for an April release. I’ll be eagerly awaiting. Peace. Porcelain Raft – Strange Weekend

I knew something was really special about this album. It only took a single listen, and now it’s officially in the arsenal of my collection of albums to light candles by, or put a fire in the grate and cuddle up to the special lady in my life. Mauro Remmidi is Porcelain Raft, and he has done something wonderful here with the forthcoming release Strange Weekend. The LP is a chilled out slightly ambient mixture of Pop music, melded together exotically with the sounds the universe makes when its in a romantic mood. You’ll agree after you hear Mauro Remmidi’s voice.

Look for Strange Weekend to drop January 24th on the Secretly Canadian label. If you like the sound of Porcelain Raft coming out of your speakers go ahead and Pre-Order Strange Weekend. Peace. Continue reading “Porcelain Raft – Strange Weekend”
