terraplane sun // ya never know

they say, “the west coast is the best coast,” and while the jury may still be out on that one, it safe to say there are some great bands emerging from the sunshine state. and if you had your good ear to the ground this past summer you may have heard the buzz surrounding the five-piece venice beach-based band terraplane. they have a gritty bluesy-rock sound which penetrates your skull like a hollow-tip barreling out of a shot-gun fashioned by the likes of canned heat with traces of the allman brothers . musical references aside the quintet’s dave trumfio-produced (of wilco & my morning jacket fame) friends ep will drop this coming tuesday on october 16th. for now, sit back and listen to terraplanes’s 2nd single from the friends ep, “ya never know.” peace. hello echo // coffee cups ep

the boston, massachusetts-based band hello echo have a gritty alt rock -n- roll thing going on, and i like it! with the trio’s latest release, titled ‘coffee cups ep‘, you get a strong taste of what’s to come. the release contains three songs which showcase why rolling stone magazine dubbed them a band to watch, but never that, just listen to the self-titled song “coffee cups”, “i wore it too” and my hands-down favorite, “country“. all of the songs provide ample reason why this band will be more than a passing infatuation. also, check the twangy yet beautiful track, “close your eyes and see” from the band’s debut lp ‘and as an extra nice bonus watch (and listen) to the neil young cover ‘everybody knows this is nowherehello‘ after the jump. peace. he’s my brother, she’s my sister // can’t see the stars

vaudeville tinged folk rocker he’s my brother, she’s my sister are just as easy on the ears as the soft soughing of autumnal winds through denuded branches. the recently signed to park the van records band have a sound both unfamiliar and refreshing. listen to the track, “can’t see the stars” and get a dose of what is working so well for this group. peace. passenger peru // heavy drugs

The math is pretty elementary on this one. justin stivers + justin gonzales = main vein shots of sun fried rainbows bathed chin deep in a feel good reduction. fyi justin s. (bassist on the antlers album ‘hospice’, pet ghost project), and justin g. manhandles all known and unknown musical instrumentation with otherworldly virtuosity. listen to the first single, “heavy drugs” from the band’s self-titled debut lp and get in touch with the vibrancy and beauty of a band who’s conquered the magic of experimentation and kept only the cream. you can cop the album on passenger peru’s bandpage. peace. field report // field report (our sunday best)

the sound carries over the airwaves into your heart like a lover’s soft whisper across the vast distance of a disheveled bed. and all the while a terrible, yet beautiful storm, rages just outside the sheltering walls. or mayhap it the division of continental divide or an argument which separates your hand from your heart’s desire. either way, these songs will make it better or so much worse. this music will draw you closer to some warmblooded body or acquaint you with circumstances or ponderances of self (or others) you’ve been putting off for better times or stronger whiskey.

field report the self-titled album, is all raw flesh and glistening bones. it is exposed nerve endings and the blatant confrontation of emotions all tangled up with whatever reality it finds you living, loving or hating. these are songs that feel long lived-in and as familiar as family, friends and foe alike. each bearable and unbearable melody is a continuance of some long-awaited conclusion finally chanced upon whether we’re ready to deal with ’em or not.

the opening track “fergus falls” guts you, spills your heart and soul before a black-sooted grate where gray-orange embers softly glow. and in this faint shimmering light you examine every past, present and future thought and rash decision you’ve ever made or made not. like archaic remains of runes or the damp tea leaves in the bottom of a chipped tea-cup these songs are a destiny all their own. and as the songs come forth one by one: “in the year of the get you alone,” “i am not waiting anymore” and on and anon. the heartfelt assault erodes your every worthless fortification.

so, by the time the final ode, “route 18” washes over your flesh; you’ve wrestled with jacob’s angel. you’re baptized, bruised and set straight anew. but like all second chances we’ll squander ’em so long as we’ve deep and dark-water songs like these to wade into and find the remedy of relief.

after the jump stream the entire album and know with certainty each song and all can be had via amazon or itunes . peace. Continue reading “field report // field report (our sunday best)”

golden animals // most my time

The upcoming album release ‘Hear Eye Go’ by the ♀ ♂ duoGolden Animals (Tommy Eisner & Linda Beercroft) is a 10-song infusion of 60’s rock (psychedelic, blues and tad rockabilly) influenced songcraft. This is a body of work which glides from one song to the next on an ethereal cloud of nostalgia and smoky luminosity. And, although the songs are mostly forlorn punches into the dark recesses of heartache, it also jabs holes into the fabric of moodiness to let the day-glow in. The album hits digitally october 30th, and after a successful kickstarter campaign the duo is set to launch another kickstarter campaign to press and self-release vinyl via Anubis Records. Peace. that’s no moon | according to ancient alien theorists

what, or rather who, it is is That’s No Moon. no, it’s not the four horsemen of the apocalypse, not even close. unless it all ends with a frenzy of utterly euphoric rock infused and electro tempered-pop noise, and in that case the champaign, illinois quartet that’s no moon fit the bill. via the label blue box records comes the band’s debut full-length and self-titled release that’s no moon  (← stream the entire album, just click the link). the album drops september 24th. however, you can also catch these pleasant, albeit vociferous noise makers at this years pygmalion music festival playing on the sleigh bells bill. peace. mumford & sons // i will wait

You know the band well, and if perchance you don’t think banjo and harmonies straight out of Appalachia. The music Mumford & Sons creates connects people, there’s no denying it. Theirs is a sound rooted in the rich heritage of the fiddle and banjo music of many a countrymen. And it isn’t a tradition steep only in the British, Irish and Scottish cultures. It is a music which has fallen upon many a folk and possesses many a nuance. But, like all music it wears traveling shoes, and it breathes and migrates like the transient and wild wind. Americans love Mumford & Sons because those same fiddle and banjo melodies settled here brought over many ages from the northern isles of Europe. Well, Mumford & Sons are back with their sophomore album Babel waiting beautifully in the wings. And the first single, “I Will Wait” couldn’t be more wonderful. It is rife and overflowing with quality and magic we’ve come to expect from this foursome of musical bros. The album drops via Mumfords & Sons very own Gentlemen of the Road label on September 24th. I’d say the closing of 2012 is shaping up quite fair. Peace. Continue reading “mumford & sons // i will wait”

space command // insult to injury

The duo consisting of Will Nichols and Craig Campbell who make up the NYC-based Space Command have expertly carved out a niche in the electronic music spectrum by crafting the Machines Make Music LP with a rock-edged sound, adding a bit of gritty charm along the way. One of my recent favorites is their, “Insult To Injury” track. These veterans of the NYC indie music scene are basking in a well-deserved limelight. Peace. the helio sequence // october

The Helio Sequence are a mainstay in the Portland, Oregon music scene and for good reason, Brandon Summers and Benjamin Weikel make good music. With the duos fifth studio release Negotiations you’ll hear imaginative songwriting and a much more expansive and warmer, albeit vintage sound. The Helio Sequence have come into their own with this release and you’re heart and ears will be thoroughly pleased. Peace. Continue reading “the helio sequence // october”
